How to apply diatomaceous earth on dog for flea control.
In this video I’ll demonstrate the best way to apply diatomaceous earth on a large and small dog for flea killer and control! Always use food grade diatomaceous earth! You can usually find it at any farm supply store and some gardening stores.
I do make and sell a blend of diatomaceous earth with ground neem, rosemary and lemongrass that is safe and non toxic to both cats, dogs, ferrets and rabbits of all ages including pregnant and lactating mommas. As I said the active ingredient that kills the fleas is the diatomaceous earth, the ground herbs will boost it by repealing new ones as well as ticks too.
Key points on your dog where fleas love to hang out are between the shoulders, base of tail and toes! Be sure to dust these areas well.

I appreciate the info! I will try to add a "pop" (as one user put it! lol) to my dogs' bums and paws and see how they do. Definitely will do this outside as I live in an apartment. If anyone seems concerned about the "inconvenience" of the dust or mess this makes just think of the inconvenience a giant 10K (or more) vet bill will feel after long term complications from flea meds like Bravecto (an insecticide) or Advantage (hormones) that we still do not know how they will affect either our dogs or our own bodies. People don't realize that when you put hormone based medications on your dog they seep into your own skin simply by petting your dogs. Added hormones wreak complete havoc on your endocrine system as well as your dogs. I will stop here because there's just so much to say and not enough time. Thank you again for this! Life is messy. Healthy outcomes are a process. Don't expect instant gratification without consequences.

@EarthsAnswers

It sure would help to treat those areas, because fleas lay their eggs off the host, those eggs take 14 days to hatch and jump back on your dog, so catching them before they do that will be faster!

Oh I’m so glad your choosing natural!! You can purchase just food grade diatomaceous earth pretty cheap even on Amazon this is a safe brand!! amzn.to/3oFEqCU You don’t have to add lemongrass, neem or rosemary for it to work but if you want to, I usually put about 1 heaping tsp of each neem, rosemary and lemongrass in 2 lbs of diatomaceous earth! Dust your babies every few days or at least once a week until you see a decline on the fleas, then you can gradually do less!!

thanks for the great video. our (mexican- more or less- we think) flat-coated retriever is of the double-coated variety and i am not certain the de is getting right in there. i have been back brushing him and directing it down towards the skin. i've done it a number of times now and while he seems better for a bit, the scratching comes back. i am doing my best to get it into his various underside spots as well as back, neck, legs and feet, though it is a time intensive process with which he is not entirely cooperative. saw the fleas on his belly for the first time today, so picked a couple off and crushed them, though up until now it had been a guess that fleas were the issue. the other issue is that we live by the water (both fresh and salt); it has been a hot summer and he, being black and double-coated, is also a see water dog- he sees it and then he's in it cooling off. of course, de needs to be dry to work externally. water appears to give him some relief, though it is now my understanding that the fleas can survive under water for some time and that they will certainly float. i give him a scrub in all the suspect places, which may or may not do anything, but then he'll go roll in the sand and/or grass in the process of it all. we never had a problem with them in the city, and it wasn't a problem for the first few months in the country, but he started scratching about 2 weeks ago. one thing that i have read is that it can dry the skin out, so i am concerned that if i keep applying it, this will happen. so far no sign of dry skin and fact is, in 4.5 years, we have never used shampoo on him. generally he smells a little nutty (good) and it is only during the summer when he is in the water all the time that he can develop a significant wet dog smell. we recently started to rinse him with the hose upon returning home to get salt and/or fresh water residue off and that may help. he doesn't love being sprayed (yet), and is utterly resistant to getting in the tub (likewise a kennel). being double coated, it takes some time for him to dry off, so it's basically the next day after water that he is dry enough to re-apply. incidentally, i have been taking de internally myself on and off for many years and rarely apply soap to anything other than my hands, shampooing pretty much every month or two. i have never found the de dust to be all that irritating, though having spent many years in construction with exposure to gluey sawdust, portland cement and some asbestos along the way, not to mention smoking my share back in the day, perhaps my lungs are used to nasty stuff- no exploratory mold surgery yet, though plenty of exposure. I do take chlorine dioxide on a regular basis as well, so who knows if that has contributed to tissue repair. i find that soaps, in general, seem to throw my micro-biome out of wack. We also put de in his food along with olive oil and apple cider vinegar as well as up to 3 or 4 teaspoons of coconut oil most days, which he loves. thoughts? thanks in advance.

Hmmmmm there are situations that are just not suitable for diatomaceous earth to work! This sounds like one of them!!! Lol but there are plenty of other great natural things to try! I have a 220 lb Great Pyrenees with a massive under coat luckily in my dry arid climate DE does work most of the time but one year we had seed ticks and no matter what I did I could not get enough DE where it needed to be to kill the ticks, this is when I started using my own pour on oils mostly cedar wood essential oil. I also used a natural but very toxic pyrethrum spray to knock all the ticks off then start on natural repellents. I also stumbled on using vitamin B1 for my mosquito repellant, when I take B1 mosquitos won’t touch me! So I started feeding Duke brewers yeast and sometimes just a good B complex for dogs! Between the B1 and dripping pure cedar wood oil all throughout Duke’s coat it seemed to really be the silver bullet! He’s been flea and tick free, I still use DE on him often but it is hard to get it where it needs to be! I concentrate the DE more in his sleeping areas where the fleas lay eggs. I’ve since been experimenting adding cedar wood, peppermint, clove and geranium oils to fractionated coconut oil for a carrier and pouring that between the shoulder blades weekly, if you could get the oils to soak in between his dips in the water it may penetrate enough to repel new fleas that with adding B1 and maybe something sulphur, garlic, msm or even a pinch of yellow sulphur? It may be the truck! No corn no soy diet is a must too,, I swear those fillers are flea and tick magnets! Lol. Thank you fir watching my video and your feedback! I so appreciate it!!

@stevenlay3772 Год назад
@@EarthsAnswers much appreciated. gonna try the B1 myself for camping. i stand corrected on one thing i said. we used the sock method to dose the carpets and didn't take precautions. definitely feel the sore throat and chest, so i would agree a mask and letting the dust settle would be recommended indoors. to expand as well- picked up a flea comb and went deep with it after using a black human hair comb. he looks like a different dog, so i will say we probably could have been brushing him a lot more in the past. flea comb made evident what was not with the other- a whole colony whose population seemed to have exploded in the last few days i am guessing by the research i have now done. so between, multiple combings and then flea combing sprayed apple cider vinegar into his coat, then taking him down to the ocean to wash that out, followed by his first shampoo ever, scratching is reduced by at least 95%. have had shampooing daily for the next week or so recommended, so we will do as much as possible. this was all followed by another dosing of de. as you might imagine, he was not enthusiastic about being flea combed into his private areas, but we did manage to get a bunch of dust in there. we also vacuumed multiple times in the last 24 hours and then, as mentioned, de'ed all the carpets and areas where he would usually hang out. interestingly, since this has all started, he has actually avoided the carpets for the most part, as well as his couch and our bed, spending most of his time on the non-carpeted bathroom and kitchen floors. it is difficult to believe that he isn't smart enough to realize he doesn't want to make matters worse. he did jump up on the bed this morning which we have covered with a dark blue cover to catch his offerings which afterwards was covered with a whole lot of tiny white specks which didn't look like the sand he is usually transporting, so i am guessing that the initial flea combing last night loosened up a whole lot of eggs. shook that out into the ditch across the road and then into the washer on hot and dryer likewise. will take a look at your products and see what we have in the oils cabinet and start implementing natural preventative strategies. and yes, raw food most of the time and freeze-dried grain-free when nothing is thawed. we actually have a supply of pastured chicken ground up backs and necks which don't give him goopy eye, which every other chicken product has, and it's under $60cdn for 35lbs. i don't tell anybody where i get it (understandably), though we also get the majority of our meat products (not so cheap) from the farm as well. regrettably, picked up some advantage which i doubt is returnable, only to discover non-bayer versions at a fraction of the cost on ebay and amazon. being that bayer now owns monsanto, not to mention their long and likely on-going history in genocidal chemical warfare, would almost prefer to see the little guy suffer (not) than support those multi-national corporate killers. i truth rant, so apologies if that is offensive, but i am betting you have some idea of the history of our lauded harmaceutical/chemical industries.... no need for a huge reply unless you feel so inclined, but your input is very appreciated. cheers!! p.s. first sightings of 2 owls and a bear on the forest walk this afternoon, less than 20 minutes from our home on the edge of town.

Thank you SO much for this video!! 🙌 Been looking all over for something truly informative! My goldendoodle has fleas but my boxer does not…not even one. They play all day together and sleep next to one another. My boxer is 8 years old and for the last 4 years I’ve been giving her garlic and apple cider vinegar in her food…it has worked wonders. Never one flea ever! It’s wild! I tried the same for my golden doodle, but it hasn’t worked for him. My question is along with the powdering method you showed here how do you treat your carpets and house? Do they need to be sprinkled with this as well? And how long until you vaccum it up? A week or longer? I heard it could get clogged easily in the vaccum? Like some people use a shop vac… Or once the fleas are killed on my pets, then do they just die naturally in my house along with my blankets, sheets, and carpet? Thank you again for all your help and wisdom! 😊 May Jesus bless your you tube channel, your family, your pets, and your Etsy store! ✝️♥️ -Hilary Lynne

Yes you can sprinkle it all over the house but it is messy, it’s never clogged my vacuum but I had a canister and was able to wash my filter! I leave it in the carpet as long as I can stand it! Over 48 hours is best! Yes they will eventually all die off if you just do the dogs but it will take extra time to break their life cycle. I have now have 12 dogs lol and we did get fleas the beginning of the summer with two new puppies that came in, it’s funny some get them worse than others and I actually have a white boxer who didn’t get one flea either. Oh yes it’s not good to breathe, so always apply it outside!! I let my dogs run around outside for a bit and play amd the DE settles into the coat and is safe to bring them indoors. The only way it will cause scarring on your lungs or your dogs is if you applied it heavily in an enclosed area over a long period of time. I work with it daily in all my products and process everything in an open barn with fans but for home use outside application makes it super safe!!

Whilst DE is very good for dogs and humans (human food grade) it still carries a health warning-it is NOT TO BE BREATHED IN. It can be very damaging to the lungs and possibly could cause silicosis. Slathering it all over dogs like that is asking for trouble. It can then fall off into their bed for instance and they’ll breath it in. Not to mention the girl covering her dog in it. Her lungs will not thank her for that. There must be a more careful approach. Perhaps adding it to their water. Or rubbing small amount in carefully?
@EarthsAnswers
@EarthsAnswers 2 месяца назад
I absolutely agree to use it with caution and I’m the girl in the video, I think it has been over warned since there are two forms of diatomaceous earth, I’ve been slathering food grade DE all over my dogs for 20 plus years, I’ve also put it all over my mattress and slept in it to kill seed ticks! I’m not advocating using it without caution but my dogs, cats and myself have never had any lung issues. In fact 15 years after using it when I got mold in my lungs and had a bronchoscopy done, they told me my lungs were perfect! Always use caution when applying any kind of fine powder, luckily this food grade diatomaceous earth is fairly heavy and will settle quickly even when applied to bedding, once the initial application has been done you don’t see plumes of dust anymore in my experience .
@sarac402
@sarac402 2 месяца назад
@@EarthsAnswers That is really good to know. Just to clarify, what are the two forms? Do you mean human grade and non humans grade?
@EarthsAnswers
@EarthsAnswers 2 месяца назад
@sarac402 there is actually 2 grades but 3 classifications, one is food grade which is used in feed grain etc at 2% ratio to keep insects out but that food grade if used for insect control falls under a class that needs EPA registration. So many times food grade DE if being sold to kill pest won’t say food grade and will be registered under the EPA with warnings. But I would never trust that label unless you absolutely know what you’re buying! Always buy food grade! It’s actually not human grade and not sold for humans only livestock. All food grade diatomaceous earth is only manufactured for livestock. But it is 100% safe for human consumption. The controversial grade that can really cause problem if breathed is filtration grade, this is a courser powder made for industries that use filtration. Such as pools! This grade is usually not in farm stores but it can be found at hardware stores etc. filtration grades should never be used for flea and tick control or for deworming. This grade has larger sharp particles that causes major lung damage. However food grade diatomaceous earth while much safer should still be used with caution but not much more than any other fine dust.
@sarac402
@sarac402 2 месяца назад
@@EarthsAnswers That is really kind of you to explain all that, thank you. I bought food grade for us, our dog and hoping to try on our cows and horses for flies etc. Having read about the silica being like tiny glass shards for the lungs I was too scared to use it! @EarthsAnswers
@EarthsAnswers 3 года назад
I make the blend without EO and instead use ground dried herbs, the neem, lemongrass and rosemary are all powdered. The powdered herbs absolutely help repel ticks and the DE will eventually kill them with contact but I do not rely on it solely for ticks in heavenly infested areas, on dogs I will use my EO sprays I make for added protection. Since cats shouldn’t use EO specially ingesting them daily during grooming I went with making my DE blend with powdered herbs which are safe and beneficial for both dogs and cats!! It works really well on fleas but ticks can take much longer to kill with DE, so I always recommend removing ticks before using as a preventative;) I’ll be making a video this week on my sprays I make and more on making my powder too!!

@michelleragan8258
@michelleragan8258 Год назад
@nccrchurchunusual7990: It might be possible that you are bathing your pup way too often. Combined with the shampoo, this might be the biggest contributing factor to dry skin, not DE. I have an American Cattle Dog, commonly known as a Blue Healer. She is now 8 months old and has an amazing, thick coat. I have bathed her only four times since I got her at 8 weeks old. According to my vet, a dog should be bathed only once every four months to avoid drying out the skin. I am very picky about my dog's food. What I feed her is expensive and has limited ingredients. No meal of any sort (no chicken meal, beef meal, etc.). There is no soy and no corn fillers. Like many, I am on a budget so I have opted to let go of some things in order to afford her food. To her food, I add just a smidge of either unfiltered, raw, organic, unrefined, cold-pressed coconut oil or a few drops of salmon omega oil which has a hemp extract in it. This helps her coat and her skin. I learned very quickly to be careful how much I add to the food to avoid diarrhea! I was on a monthly pest control regimen but can no longer afford that. I opted for the organic, all-natural pest control but that is expensive so I ended that and now am having issues with fleas even though my dog is also on a monthly prescription preventative. I just received my organic food-grade DE early this morning (Thanks to Amazon!) and am currently watering my yard so that I can apply it. Like you, I live in the south; the deep southern part of Texas to be more precise. Fleas are horrendous here. After watching the video and reading through all the comments here, I am going to do some research on the "Trio" I give my dog monthly to prevent fleas, ticks, and heartworms. Thank you @EarthAnswers for the great information and for the video!

Once you see a decline you can reduce the applications, if your using it for prevention that all depends on your lifestyle too, indoor dog or cat in a town house may need way less that outside dogs and cats on a farm. I thought it wasn't good for their lungs?
@EarthsAnswers

It’s definitely not good to inhale it in closed areas, it’s not any more harmful than applying any flea powders on the market. Doing it outside is very safe.

@@EarthsAnswers how often do I do it? I saw a flea, and I went out and got some Frontline, because I don't go to the vet I don't trust them they just want to give them vaccines and I don't want to give my dog a million vaccines a year. Anyway two days later I see another flea so obviously the front line didn't work 🤦 Oh I've been using flea flee for years and has worked great till now

OMGOSH... I can't believe she's using this without a face mask. Everything that I've ever read over and over again says you need to wear a face mask. The microscopic exoskeletons are like shards of glass. If inhale into your lungs it's possibly that you can have lung damage and respiratory problems. The same with your cats and your dogs. You're not supposed to let them inhale the dust. If you watch the video you'll see all the excess flying through the air this is really bad for the lungs. I applied it once a week for 3 weeks to my front yard and within 2 days of the second treatment my chest was hurting and I did get an infection and I was coughing up green thick chunks of mucus. Definitely definitely wear a face mask and avoid the excess from being inhaled from your dog or cat. And make sure that it's food grade. Diatomaceous comes in two form one that's used to clean your pools which is very bad do not use that for your dogs and the second one is diatomaceous food grade which can be used to treat your yard

Are you positive what you used in your yard was pure and food grade? I’ve been using it this way for over a decade, my lungs are perfect, last winter o got mold in my lungs and had exploratory surgery, the doctors said my lungs looked perfect. My dogs and cats have never once had any respiratory issues. This is the reason for my videos, I truly believe it’s not near as bad as some skeptics say. Definitely wear a mask if and when you use it, you sound like you may have a sensitivity to it. :(

@@EarthsAnswers well my vet of course wanted to put my poor old flea bitten dog on some oral pesticide and I declined. Found my food grade DE and nailed him yesterday outside twice and he is way less scratchy I was getting worried. Sprinkled on his beds too. Never knew about the paws but him walking on the beds will help there too. OK that's it I liked your video and don't worry about these Karens.

@@JohnDoe-np3zk oh awesome so glad you used something natural! I do believe it’s the better choice. I totally understand why there are some potent chemicals, some of these pest can be pretty bad! But I do think that we are starting to realize the chemicals are more dangerous than the annoying pest. I don’t mind the “Karen’s” lol hopefully I can give them a different prospective, heck I’ve been skeptical and on the wrong side of the fence myself many times! Knowledge is power and we are so lucky to share our knowledge in such a vast way! I hope I can influence many skeptics ;)

Umm, good grade is good grade. It’s ingested at some points. As far as the “like shards of glass”, better to use pesticides and give the animals neuro issues? Cause I learned about DE way too late and we sprayed for fleas and it killed our chickens even though the company swore it was safe. My chickens can have DE in the coop w them and not bat an eye at it. I think maybe unless you have experience w DE or any other product directly for a decent duration of time, you shouldn’t be “omg-Ing” over something you don’t have experience with.

Same here. There's one guy that did this and a few years later his dog died. They believe it was from using de incorrectly.

all powder isnt really good for lungs which is why you use it outdoors or wear a mask indoors until the dust settles. It would take an entire 5lb bag, being inhaled, for you to actually see any real negative affects.... this bs has been perpetuated for years as people go buy pills, shampoos etc FULL of CHEMICALS & use it to treat their animals. Its absolutely absurd. Also, DE is amazing to use as a supplement for you & your animals. Please stop perpetuating stereotypes regarding something you obviously arent educated on. Smh. Stop doing work for pesticide companies that actually hurt people & animals yearly with their chemicals.

Not true.Think about a 2 lb kitten.It can damage their lungs.I do it without a mask indoor when dropped on carpets.Then mask when I spread it around with broom or brush on carpet.Animals I do outside.I have done animals inside and blow away dust from there face if it gets close but none skilled,never done this before people should do outdoor and watch the wind.Not everyone read directions or pamphlet fully so they should be as safe as possible not to over dust pets.There are people who will just read a review and think of no big deal.I can do it however cause someone on line said it was safe no matter what.Thats the person who will damage theirs animals. And self. It's actually listed as a hazard because it's damaged many people and pets before or they wouldn't put the warning on there.
