How to Attach Interlocking Solid-Wood Edging to Plywood

Covering plywood edges with solid wood is a common method to hide the core material. In this case, we attach a thicker piece of solid wood, so that we can cut a decorative chamfer along the edge. A short tongue on the edging fits into a centered groove in the plywood to join the parts.

Thanks for a good video. If you could make another video or explain how you made those rounded corners using plywood, it would be great!

Espen Lodden I couldn't be certain but a few ideas: He might have curfed the ply and joined it underneath the table. As for the curved banding its hard to say without close inspection but it could be cut from several pieces - 2 long both with a curved ends being the same as the curved ply radius and then 2 short straight pieces that join the two long. They can then be glued and routed to leave a curved front edge. Because the band is full wood the joins may not be so visible. It's possible that one piece could be used as banding but it may not make economic sense.

In the openingshot, when he has his hand on it you can see the corner's lines where it meets the plywood.

Thanks for the clear instructions; I was planning to do something similar to make 12 inch shelves an inch or two wider to save plywood waste. I am considering whether it might be easier to cut slots on both edges the width of 1/4 inch plywood, then use a strip of plywood in the slots, similar in theory to a biscuit joiner. Or, even cut shorter slots and make biscuits the same size. Any thoughts?

When gluing the stips, should a person spread glue only in the groove? Isn't it better to shoot for a bit of squeeze-out, so you know you have full glue coverage?

Great video. What technique would you use to edge a thicker piece? I'm going to laminate(glue) three pieces of plywood together to make a floating shelf, so that would make it about 2.25" thick. And I was thinking of routing a profile into the hardwood edge after it's attached. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me. Mark

How does the banding look from above? I plan on using tung oil on a project that will use banding similar to this around plywood. Everything will be walnut. Will you be able to tell easily?

I think it's best if you "joint" the edges first. You can do it with a router table if you have a split fence. Lots of examples of this on RU-vid.

that router table looked wonderful .. what kind of lift was he using? And I saw two adjustments .. one for height.. what was the other one ?

Incra router lift one adjustment is to raise and lower the other locks the lift so it doesn't move

Also the test piece used to test tongue need only be routed in a few inches or 3 cm to test it into the grove then cut off that test piece and readjust to save wood ..

how did he make the table with those large rounded edges using plywood?
@matthewbaskerville8996
@matthewbaskerville8996 6 лет назад
looks like 4 plywood panels, with the curved pieces being solid walnut cut to shape, then joined. you can see a slight color difference in the corners, and a small seam where the grains don't match up. It looks very well done imo.

Are you only able to use this method to two sides of the pieces? If you wanted to add edging all the way around, wouldn't the tongues on each corner butt into each other?
@tonyklingenberg2401
@tonyklingenberg2401 7 лет назад
You would need to miter the edges, then it's possible
@cgriesemer
@cgriesemer 7 лет назад
+Tony Klingenberg Ah good call. I don't think I've ever accurately measured a mitre on the first try in my life, but you are totally right, you'd need some 45 degree angles to get them to all fit right.
@tonyklingenberg2401
@tonyklingenberg2401 7 лет назад
+cgriesemer It works better if you do it piece by piece. Get the inner length right, add the next piece.. It's a bit tricky, just don't give up to enhance your skills

What if your panel is large and you can't put that on a router table?
@pf5658

It’s simple. Just take the router to the piece. Don’t necessarily have to use a router table.

I recently watched a James Hamilton/Stumpy Nubs video that showed a similar technique using a dovetail bit and you both made the same mistake! You both neglected to advise your viewers and students to make a setup jig at teach step of the way when they first use this technique. Even though this is one of those techniques that will be rarely used, the complexity of it's setup demands a jig for future use. In addition, if one has a jig to quickly and easily set this up, one may be more inclined to use the technique on projects that do not necessary need them for the added quality of the piece. Steps to making a setup jig. 1) When you have the groove setting zeroed in where you want it; take a scrap board that is wide enough to make two edges and route a groove on one side. 2) Once you have the tongue settings set up, on the opposite side of the board you put your groove jig in, route a tongue. 3) Write on the board the bit and plywood thickness that the jig is used for. 4) For future projects, use your jig to quickly zero in on the setting for the given groove or tongue. Then make a test run in scrap to insure that the wood has not moved while it was in storage. Enjoy your new jig!

.....and your jig would only work if your next project is EXACTLY the same thickness. aka waste of time
@scotttovey
@scotttovey 2 года назад
@@stevene9785 Waste of time? Only if you don't use it properly. While wood thickness does vary, the variance is not so great that it would prevent you from using the jig as a starting point to make zeroing in to the final depth a lot faster.
@stevene9785
@stevene9785 2 года назад
@@scotttovey You could also simply mark the center line on your material and that is just as good or better as a starting point. The point is if you do not understand the geometry of the bit, a novice will never set up this bit and use it properly unless his material is EXACTLY the same thickness.

I guess 3/4 of the video is useless if you purchase a pair of tongue and groove bits. But it's good if you're learning

Works just as well if you just glue and clamp the edge banding. There really is no need for this type of joinery.

Justin Giglio Self registering is one benefit, but it takes a lot more time and set up. I've never had to use it and I don't think most people would need it either.

while face glueing it may be sufficient and the dado may be going overboard, it is certainly more structurally sound

Edge banding doesn't work because the drawer openings are routed later to create the 1950s style tv look. This video goes with their magazine article.
