"Only 5 people were in her high school and 3 of them were German, so it was a low bar." That is really funny, so Nancy must have said it first. Humor is one of the joys God brings and sorrow and guilt are swallowed up by Grace.

What a great devotion this morning! I grew up on a family farm in a very small town, small church, small school, etc. When I look back at my childhood I view everything through rose colored glasses....except for my time spent in church. I've tried to remember anything pleasant i.e. Easter egg hunt, Christmas program, etc but there always seemed to be a feeling of dread at the very least. After this morning's devotion it occurred to me that in part I am still carrying on that "lack of joy" towards God. For years I tried not to entertain the thought that it was God's fault, but actually I did. Even lighting a candle or drinking a cup of coffee, that is so insightful to see that as a blessing from God. Could I use a cookie instead......?

I enjoyed the commentary on Nehemiah and the choice food. There is a custom among Jewish groups for children to study the alphabet on wood or parchment smeared with honey. They are told to lick the honey to taste the goodness of the Lord.

Amen to beginning today with a smile, the smell of coffee brings me a smile triggering a warm toasty memory of my dad, he always took his first sip and followed it with “ahhh…so good…with a huge smile.” Taste and see that the Lord is good. Thank you for bringing freshness & a blessed memory of the joy in the Lord to kick start my day. 💕🍃

I have good memories associated with coffee, too! My parents would sit on the porch when they got home from work and drink a cup of coffee. I often joined them. It would be humid in the South, but a fan was going, creating a lovely breeze. One of my "rewards" (something that just makes my DAY) is a good cup of coffee. Not all of my joys are so simple, but I love that I have this one treasure. Before I saw this, I literally inhaled the aroma of my good pot of coffee and it made me breathe in deeply as I started out the window...And it makes me think of God. :) My husband oftentimes spoils me by making me coffee. And I get so excited EVERY single time. I gotta cling to these wonderful joys. :)

Oh how I needed these words today!! I have even made Psalm 16 my scripture for the year...been memorizing it and I have such a difficult time imagining God smiling at me! All these years of walking as a believer and struggle to equate God's presence with joy! I LOVE the phrase, "sorrow and guilt swallowed up in grace!"
