The real horror of this film wasn't the crawlers, but the fact that they are so unintelligent to go explore an unmarked cave, without an escape plan.

Scariest fact is, people like Juno actually exist.

That nutty putty cave incident is one of the scariest stories I’ve ever read about, seriously, if you still think spelunking is a good idea, read about that, it’ll definitely change your mind.

The real life Nutty Putty Cave tragedy straight up gave me nightmares. Can’t think of a worse way to die. Stuck upside down in a dark narrow unmapped section of a tunnel underground with no space to move at all. So tight you can’t take full breaths, suffering for 27 agonizing hours, and dying of suffocation and heart failure. And after that your body just being left there to rot, and the entrance to the cave permanently cemented. A truly horrible tragedy.

I like to do a weird thing where I imagine different characters in certain movies/video games and how they would handle the current situation, and all I have to say about this movie is if these women were replaced with the dwarfs from deeprock galactic the dwarfs would probably be having a field day down in that cave

There is another ending, the woman at the end was hallucinating the escape and we are shown that she is still at the cave with the crawlers approaching

The scariest thing about this movie is how claustrophobic it is. That scene where one of the girls got stuck and started to panic killed me.

The fact this movie takes place in the Appalachian mountains makes perfect sense. The mysteries surrounding that area keeps me awake at night

I love how the director let the actors that played crawlers away from the main women. The women had no idea what the crawlers would look like, so the director played on that to get genuine reactions and terrify the actresses.

If by “Level 2 cave” they’re referring to climbing grades, 2nd is the 2nd hardest; pretty much serious climbing gear is needed, especially if inexperienced

What’s actually scary is how easy this could actually happen not the crawlers but someone’s closest friend tricking them into going dangerous places and you’d never really know

Sarah could have escaped if she'd watched her step on the way out. The actual entrance was there, but right before it she fell down a hole and then hallucinated a false escape. Seemed like a cheap way to take her out, but the point of the movie was that no one was getting out of the cave.

I remember seeing this in the theater back on 07 or 08. The scenes where they have to cross the chamber ceilings with no harnesses still puts my heart in my stomach to this day! One of the few horror movies that actually made me feel horror!

If I’m not mistaken, there is an ending where after her PTSD moment at the end, she wakes back up in the cave, on an edge, unable to escape with the shrieks and screams of the monsters in the distance

To be fair, I think anything extraneous is a no go for someone with PTSD. A sudden jolt of adrenaline, even from something not related to their trauma could make things worse, especially in a delicate situation away from immediate help. Nothing against anyone with PTSD, by the way. Anyone with it have learned a very hard way to be overly aware and respond justly to just about anything.

I know we think that the Crawlers were the villains in this movie, but it was really Juno who was the antagonist. She willingly led the girls into a cave that has never been explored successfully, didnt bring the map, continues to ignore the warning signs, had a heavy affair with Sarah’s husband, killed Beth and left her for dead, and wore a necklace that carried a phrase Sarah’s husband used to say.

I HIGHLY prefer the ending where no one lives. It changes the movie from good to great for me. Maybe less than 1% of horror movies go for the “everyone dies in the end”. There always has to be one survivor, and that is so boring after decades of it. Movies like this, Eden Lake, The Beyond, Martyrs, Funny Games, I love these movies for going all the way

I love this movie, but the fact that these monsters have zero sense of smell and nothing resembling echo location when it counts has always annoyed me, let's be honest, if you're in a small room with someone after they've spent who knows how many hours covered in sweat and mud, even you could detect almost exactly where they are through scent alone with your s#!tty useless human nose.

Version from the UK has a different ending. In the UK version, this ghost causes Sarah to wake up for real at the bottom of the cave, revealing her escape to be just a dream. She then has a vision of her daughter's birthday cake, which we see is just her torch. The camera backs out, the voices of the creatures can be heard again and are increasing in strength as they are closing in on her, and the movie ends.

these are creatures that literally evolved to live in caves, to fight eachother and are extreamely hungry, no way anybody is defeating them in a brawl

The guidebook was literally the clincher on these people surviving this. If even one of them had it on hand, they would have been able to call Juno out on her Bullshit instantly. The moment the went down the wrong path they were ALL dead (UK ending, canon ending babeeeeeeeeeeee). I can also forgive many of the character's mistakes after the 'wrong path' choice because caves don't have much oxygen to go around, and the sever lack of it would have resulted in Brain Hypoxia occurring very quickly. Rational thought ain't gonna happen when the percentage of oxygen in the air drops to the single digits. Fun fact: The creatures in the movie would be scientifically identified as either Troglobites (creatures who cannot exist anywhere but within caves, surviving off of whatever falls into the caverns) or more likely Troglophiles (creatures that enjoy living in caves and would prefer to do so, but can leave caves for food if they wish) due to their large bodies increasing their energy expenditure making full cave life inefficient, and the dead elk found outside the caves pointing to a nocturnal lifestyle. The one smart move was that the women in the film didn't go to the caves at night, because if they did, not even the surface around the cave would be a 'safe area'.

The fact i have claustrophobia this movie makes me stressed and scared.

How I would beat this: don’t go into a cave if I don’t know anything about

A 'storm whistle' or 'shark whistle' that hikers carry (if they have any sense) is a great idea. Those two are the loudest whistes you can get and are used to signal an emergency. Those things can be heard a mile away. If you put your fingers in your ears and blew that in a confined cave, I dare say something that us blind and relys on having very accute hearing might have some serious problems ahead. It wouldn't just be deaf during the whistle blast, I dare say it might not be hearing ANYTHING for quite a minute or two.

Caving does have levels. Level 1 is mostly walking and level 2 sees the introduction of simple rope work like abseiling or srt

Taking in the canonical ending for this movie, I really don't think it's possible to survive. When you get so deep into the unmarked cave and it's just you vs the Crawlers, the crawlers would win. There's no way to tell how many are down there and you can only kill so many before they overwhelm.

The scene where they first encounter the crawlers and the girls reactions are genuine, the director wanted to get the genuine reaction and another cool fact is that cave area was all built full scale by the prop team. Had to watch the Directors cut in school many years ago!

THE COMPLETE SURVIVAL GUIDE TO KILLING CRAWLERS: 1.Traps: The Crawlers are extremely weak to traps in my opinion. Their inability to see is a weakness you should abuse. Bear traps could work,but I believe using them to be a waste,since they are going to hit one and that's that. Large traps like pitfalls and well placed spikes are preferable since when one falls in,the other is going to fall in right behind it. Caltrops could be quite brutal,since these creatures aren't that large stepping on one could disable them with the extreme pain it will feel. (Picture a large metal star digging into the bottom of your foot.) Well placed explosive to cave in the area above them could be effective if you could properly set it up. 2. Bait: Baiting is extremely easy,since all you have to do is make some noise or place some strong smelling lure. Try to bait them into traps or areas where their numbers will be troublesome,like choke points or small spaces. Otherwise if you have a firing team,lure them into a large open space so you could shoot them as they try to cover the distance. 3. Capture: A rope trap or cage that drops could work nicely. Don't let it call for help though. It will be hard to move one while it's entire group is trying to get you. Knock it out when it's in the trap and start moving. On the topic of knocking it out, another method of capture is to tranquilize it and then just dump it in a cage at your own pace. It's not very large so tranquilizers should kick in fast. Just in case however,get a corpse beforehand,then let a professional check it for anything that could possibly resist a tranq dart. 4. Suitable Weapons: Shotgun. Tight,enclosed space and there are a lot of them. Hence, shotgun. A more explosive option would be a shrapnel grenade. Same reason as the shotgun. Be sure to throw it far away and be careful of a cave in. The melee options (though I don't know why you'd try to melee something like this) include a riot shield and any weapon that is short and only needs one hand to be held. The riot shield will help, since these things will just ram it because they can't see it's not a part of you. The reason for the short, one handed weapon is that you won't have a lot of space to swing in tight space of a cave,so a long weapon will be difficult to use. 5. Weakness and how to abuse it: They can only find you by hearing or smelling you. Go in there with a boom box and a lot of speakers. Now bring out some powerful smelling perfume (the kind old ladies use that burn your nose) and rub it on the walls and yourself,as well as your companions. Use suppressors if you can,crossbows if you can't. Start blasting rock music like AC/DC and shoot the confused Crawlers as they scramble around attacking the walls. Play the DOOM soundtrack if you're feeling particularly bloodthirsty. Conclusion: When you really think about it, you're basically just killing some naked blind people in a cave. Now that you have your guide book ready,go hunt some naked people! ... Or maybe just play some Doom Eternal,eat some snacks or watch a movie while curled up in a nice, warm blanket?

This is one of the best underated horror ive ever watch.

Just an FYI. The tiny crawler that jumped Sarah after she mercy killed her friend. Was a child probably around age 6 or 7. The female that followed was most likely the mother or a mother set to watch the child. In story sense it shows that even though the girls are being attacked and eaten they are "invading" the home of the crawlers. Food for thought

All fun and stuff, but, true story: near where I live is a small cave. Has some history about excavations, bones, cannibalism in stoneage times etc. Quite interesting and very well explored….the cave is around 100m, quite straight and often visited. You don’t need any equipment other than a strong head- or flashlight….mine broke 2/3 in the cave…pitch black from one moment to the other, only you and the noises around you….of course I had a spare light but the 2 min to get it were really…interesting. Point: never try to put reason in such situations…reason is the first thing going down the toilet when you are really afraid 😅

I used to be an arborist and we would frequently send 20-30 foot tree tops, with two guys guiding/slowing it on the way down with 5/8” rope. Tree tops are much heavier than an adult woman, and even with atlas gloves on the friction of the rope will make your hands burn and throb for a few minutes, but catching someone from a fall like 11:20 would more than likely not cause a gash like that

Traction on a misaligned bone is usually pretty helpful, should see femur break patients, some are in agonizing pain and that pain is relatively mitigated just about the second you put a traction splint on and allow for the re-expansion of the muscle that's currently all balled up in the femur, but what do I know.

One thing I'll point out: as many times as I have seen this movie, I NEVER noticed that POWER DRILL dangling from one of the girls as she was crossing that chasm until you pointed it out!!!! As BIG as that thing was, how did I NOT notice that thing AND WHY did they not use for defense until the batteries died out. - Guess the writers forgot about it as well.
