I started bingeing and dieting and bingeing age 12, at 54 (4 years ago) I found Chef AJ and the Physicians Committee's channels on YT and they really helped me overcome my bingeing and cravings. I became a whole food vegan, and I don't have any oils or added sugar either. I learnt to cook simple but delicious meals. I don't count calories, but calories obviously still count so I follow Chef AJ's calorie density chart, this way I have a general idea of how calorie rich the food I'm eating is. The wonderful thing about this way of eating is that you can eat very generous portions - ideal for me as I will always be a volume eater (and an addict, when it comes to processed and other trigger foods). I don't bring any trigger food into the house - EVER! What you don't buy, you can't eat. I eat a lot but achieved my very slim ideal weight 4 years ago and have maintained my happy weight ever since. At 58, I look good for the first time in my life, it's really never too late. I feel young, I am healthy, my acne has cleared, all fitted clothes and jeans feel comfortable, I have started exercising again (I didn't need to exercise at all to lose weight, it really is the food!). As I said, I will not bring trigger foods into the house, I know I can't eat them in moderation - I tried eating some vegan chocolate 3 years ago and sure enough I binged on it and had to throw it away before I could finish the whole jar, I haven't fallen off-track since because I don't bring any ultra-processed sweet/sugary/salty/fatty food into the house, for example crisps (I used to be a crisp fiend). I have created wonderful food memories around the healthy whole plant food I eat. I batch cook and food prep so I always have something healthy and low-calorie ready to eat. If you're tummy is food of amazing food, you will not think about the unhealthy fattening processed ones. But you might start craving lovely sweet potatoes with broccoli or a delicious fruit or veggie salad, or a big bowl of oil-free veggie soup. I have a huge bowl of soup every night for dinner, which is my lightest meal, for example last night it was riced cauliflower and mushrooms in a tomato, onion, garlic and basil sauce, tonight it's lentils and aubergines in the same tomato sauce.

I have been following you for over a year now. I watched this video yesterday and realized for the first time in years that I have been using food to excuse or satisfy other needs. Today something amazing happened. I came home after work, tired and not in the mood to do anything that I "should". My instinct was that I wanted to sit down and eat. But instead I could tell myself "I'm not hungry. I'm tired and need to rest for a while before I do something else." This was a big step for me and I couldn’t have done it without you Lucie. Thank you! ❤

This was so helpful! Could you possibly do a video explaining how to transition from calories and macro counting to eating intuitively without weighing anything and without fearing the numbers? Any science backed info if welcomed cues I really feel I need to stop but the thought is a lil scary x

I am 21, have been yoyoing around dieting my entire life because no one in my Family really has healthy weight and there are no healthy eating habits and i have never found more useful advice than your videos. I have read books, watched videos looked at pinterest tried couches and weightloss challenges for years and years and even if i lost weight it wasn’t sustainable and eventually fell back and never understood how some people just naturally “have it all” THANK YOU!! Ah yes, the voice of reason! Couldn’t agree more w this and fully resonate w it! And love the ‘fake it til you make it’ mentality / makes so much sense!! Had to laugh just cause yesterday a video showed up in my feed from one of the nutty American keto proponents actually suggesting that to kickstart weight loss, one should eat nothing but sardines for three days… makes you want to just blow your brains out when you see these videos… Makes me appreciate this content so much more!!

I usually overeat because im so irrationally afraid that there won't be enough food later and it will be unbearably painful. so I'll eat a lot in one sitting to try to "get the food of the day" over with and reap no joy or satisfaction from it. yeesh. definitely something leftover from having a horrible ED mindset., when there really WOULDNT be enough food later... now the idea of hunger is so overwhelming and scary to me, I just never want to feel it. it feels like I'll never let go of this mindset but I'm very, very slowly experimenting with feeling hunger again and feeling satisfaction versus "stuffed" again. setting small timers or making tiny goals to try to increase my tolerance really gently. it doesn't feel great right now. and a lot of the emotional numbness that overeating helped me maintain is starting to crack. woof. im really struggling.

Thank you ! If only I would have listened to my 1/2 French granny I would not have developed such a terrible relationship with food over the years. 3 meals a day. No constant snacking between meals. And sweets as an occasional treat.

You talked about - and showed - people eating doughnuts, etc. and said they were normal food. They are not, they're ultra-processed nutrient-poor "foods" that were designed with the combination of salt/sugar/fat that make them addicting, that's why we binge on them and feel we have lost control over our eating. We keep overeating because these foods don't nourish our brain and bodies, these "foods" are like a drug that hits our dopamine centres but are ultimately not satisfying and make us fat and ashamed. It's only in the past couple of decades that these ultra-processed addicting foods full of salt/sugar/fat have become so available and cheap, easy to order and have delivered to our homes 24/7. You don't need them, please don't bring them into the house, if they're in your house, they're in your mouth, and you will binge on them again. Lucie, you might have been a moderate overeater (like I was at first, but the bingeing always gets worse) and might be one of those rare people who could overcome bingeing while still having these trigger foods around, you have a rare personality that most of us don't have. Look around, if we were able to keep eating these trigger foods in moderation, we wouldn't be overweight/obese in the first place. You wouldn't advise a smoker or an alcoholic to just consume their drug in moderation and ultra-processed trigger foods are a drug, you don't need to eat them to live (our grandparents didn't), so abstinence for a long time or forever is the only solution. Fill your tummy (and fridge/freezer) with healthy fibre-rich and water-rich foods (soups salads, stews, casseroles, etc.), be prepared with healthy meals/ingredients/snacks you have put together in advance - if you fail to prepare you prepare to fail.

I totally disagree that you should still buy and eat the foods that trigger you to binge (crisps, chocolate, pastries). If you could eat them in moderation, you wouldn't be bingeing. You need to stop buying them and stop eating them, at least for 6 months, maybe forever. You can live without them or you can try eating them in moderation in 6-12 months, but you have failed to do so in the past and bingeing on them again is not worth the risk. Find healthy delicious foods to eat instead. It is madness in my opinion to continue having these tempting foods in the house, they'll be calling your name, maybe not today, but tomorrow or the day after, and you'll be thinking of them all the time, it's in our biology, we are programmed to want to eat the most calorific food in order to survive and make babies. You Lucie might be able to eat these rich, processed foods in moderation now, but 99.9% of people won't. One day in the distant future you might be able to have, say, nut bars or croissants or crisps in the house, but if you try it and go off-track again, then it might start a bingeing cycle you can't stop and this is not worth the risk of undoing the good work of months or even years. You don't need pastries or processed cheese or sweets or crisps or biscuits, etc. to live, find other wonderful delicious healthy food to fill your tummy instead, nobody needs a particular food to survive (not even nuts or oils, they may be vegan, and nuts may be healthy, but they're also extremely high in calories. If you must eat a couple of nuts, buy them in their shell, not ready shelled, and shell them the old-fashioned way, by the time you've removed the shell it will take a couple of minutes and you'll only eat one or two instead of 20).
