Wondering how to best communicate with your mate? Wish you could express yourself more effectively, bypass arguments, and go straight to conflict resolution? Here's the method:
Far too often we can get into a rut with our mate. We develop a certain style of fighting or arguing, and then that is our "go to" position for any disagreement. Whether your style is aggression or passivity, to walk away or to walk toward and confront, if it's not working then it's in need of revision.
Resentment are the things that slowly erode and otherwise healthy love. And resentment comes from feelings that have not been expressed, and problems that have not been solved. It is when you are so exhausted by trying to explain yourself to your mate and you see there is no change on their part. Or you are so tired of hearing what they need and you are certain, you are doing your best, but whatever they need feels out of your reach.
Long-term relationships require specific communication skills to get through the day-to-day challenges of life, as well as partnership. This video will assist you in how to express yourself.

Susan, at 58 and thrice married & divorced, we need your content as curriculum in our schools. Imagine how much better relationships would be handled if we had this education as children. Seriously! Love you, thanks for all you do for us

@drylakes- I agree with you. I think you've heard me talk in the past about how Spain incorporated into their new constitution back in the 70s a class for young students called 'Derechos y Obligaciones.' School children learn, they have human rights that supersede their race, financial strata, or religion. And that they deserve to be respected as a complete and worthy human being. And in turn, they are to respect others in equal measure. This is taught. in grade school!! Can you imagine if we could institute polite behavior, communication skills, civil discourse? Honestly, I'd be the first one to volunteer my services.

Susan, what do you think about the Gottman institute?- with their percentage estimate of 69% of problems you have in the relationship, will remain throughout the entirety of it. How would you navigate this? meaning, you communicate and do your steps here but the issues arise over again the course of the relationship. Btw, this isn't a negative comment and i am curious about how to best approach consistent problems that arise in the future, with a future spouse.

I think the Gottman's are amazing and their Institute is an incredible resource for all of us. Remember, they have a 98% prediction rate as to which marriages will survive. And given your question, now it depends upon the courage and desire for both partners to reframe their "conflict resolution style.". If their go-to default remains the same, then you are correct. The issues will remain throughout the entirety of their relationship. However, if both individuals are willing to move into the discomfort of trying something new, finding better ways to communicate, being cognizant of the fact that they are going to their automatic default, and seek the help of their partner to eradicate that behavior… Then you have a very positive outcome. Thank you for your thoughtful and intelligent question.

Not the best at times ! My partner has BPD, It's like a rollercoaster most of the time !!!

Gbear, that is definitely a tough one. Not knowing how quickly your partner cycles through their phases, I could only suggest that when they are in a more receptive mood, that is the time to discuss the architecture of the issues that are going on.
