I ditched toothpaste over ten years ago. Me and my family have used baking soda ever since. I wet the toothbrush and dip it into the soda. Its caked one. Then stick it under a dripping faucet just to turn it into a wet paste. Spread around all teeth, then light brushing. Rinse. Then i gargle with peroxide for a whole minute. Rinse. Toothpaste caused thrush, gingivitis, swollen gums, tartar, cavities, and kept me going to the dentist. I haven't been back once after ditching toothpaste. People should wise up and realize the industry wants you to need them $$. They will lie to get your business. Same applies to healthcare.

About 70 years ago, when I was I was in elementary school, I was told to brush my teeth in the "direction they grow," including the gums. Upper teeth are brushed down and lower teeth are brushed upward. I have been brushing that way ever since with whatever paste that was handy and now have healthy teeth and gums. To me that most important part of brushing is to take the time to do a proper job.

I am swiss-german and it is very astounding how much the scientific consensus changes depending on language. When you google baking soda in german, all the dentist say that baking soda is super abrasive and should enver be used on teeth (but no actual rda mention and no personal anecdotes either). When you google it in english, they say numerous times that baking soda has a rda of 9, so way less abrasive then most toothpastes. And of course it has a high ph so great for neutralizing acids. Thanks doc, I'll try this technique! Never learned it like this

This is great. WAY cheaper than buying toothpaste. I'm going to try this, but the other thing that I do is use a Waterpik to clean between my teeth and gumline using about a 20% solution of food-grade hydrogen peroxide. I just started this a couple of months ago and I'm going to the dentist this Friday to see how the pockets have healed. My teeth sure seem to be a lot tighter since I started that, so I think my gums are growing back to health. I also had a bad infection in my left main molar that I've been keeping at bay this way. It helped, but couldn't completely get rid of it, so that tooth is now gone and I'm waiting for the bone graft to heal so I can get an implant to replace it.

@@BigPoppa-Monk Well, the tooth was dead and there was a massive infection under it, so it's been removed. I can't have a bridge because the tooth behind that molar leans too far forward and they would have to grind it down to the nerve to get a bridge to fit and the tooth in front of it leans out too far. So it's either get an implant or never chew on that side of my mouth again. I don't see much of an option.

Was researching years ago about the affects typical toothpastes have on the body with their minimal doses that build up past the safe body limits we're allowed to digest and I quit them. Since then, I've been brushing with coconut oil and baking soda ever since. I rinse with hydrogen peroxide about twice a week and have always had great dental checkups. My visits for the past few years have left my hygienists disappointed because they were hoping to give me a cleaning but there wasn't anything to clean. I've literally had my mouth be called 'boring' because there wasn't anything to clean. I always get asked what I use and the dentists/hygienists are always surprised. It has cut down the cost of my dental supplied drastically and I have a healthier mouth. Thanks to dentists like you, we're able to make better choices.

@@isisilya5120 this is what I’ve found: “According to the Mohs Hardness Scale, tooth enamel earns a 5. That means it's about as hard, or harder, than steel. For reference, diamonds are the strongest substance on earth, ranking 10 on the Mohs scale.” Have you ever tried to polish steel with baking soda? I have, it’s so difficult I gave up. My feeling is you could never brush long enough or hard enough to do any damage to the enamel. Use common sense though, use a small amount and brush lightly. There’s no reason to grind off anything from your teeth. I alternate on different days using salt, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, turmeric with black pepper combination. Everyday is something different including Vicco toothpaste made in India. *Edit. I’ve recently added povidone iodine to the days when I use toothpaste. Just a drop added to the toothpaste to kill bacteria. I’m aware that I am killing good and bad bacteria but my intention is to kill the bad stuff & hoping the good will return before the bad. Thinking about it now, I should immediately follow up with protective coating of some sort before the bad bacteria attacks enamel.

Never fails to amaze me, somebody unearths a 4000 year old skeleton in a cave somewhere, from a time before toothbrushes, toothpaste, fluoride... and the teeth are perfect. Literally perfect. Far better than any middle aged American alive today. Nowadays, the kids can't even make it to ten years old and they have a mouth full of fillings, crowns and braces that cost more than a car. When they get in their college years, there is no way in creation they can get by without having all of their Wisdom teeth surgically removed... Something just isn't right here.

tl;dr - hundred/thousand years ago more chewing = bigger mouth = no need for extracting wisdom teeth, far as those go. If it helps any, part of the reason is that said hundred/thousand years ago, there used to be a lot more chewing involved as food overall was far less processed. Therefore it was more chewy (think - roasted leg/shoulder joint of an animal levels of chewiness) which required a larger jaw and also added more muscle to it, thus adding more space. So that's why, at least far as wisdom teeth go, those weren't pulled out as often.
@Jerseyhighlander

@@Hiniberus I was fanatic about my son's nutrition from the day my wife told me she was pregnant. He has never used a fluoride toothpaste, never had fluoride treatments of any kind or any modern dentistry, just good solid nutrition and he is the only one I know that has his wisdom teeth, perfectly formed, no issues at all. Twenty years old and not a filling in his mouth. And no, it's not "genetic" in any way.

This is the first time I've ever heard a dentist address the root cause of tooth decay! I had an epiphany years ago that the key to eliminating plaque was to reduce the growth of bacteria which is absolutely necessary for it to form. We began rinsing our mouths thoroughly at bedtime with warm water mixed with Sodium Bicarbonate(food-grade baking soda) to create an environment hostile to the unfettered growth of bacteria by meddling with PH. We also began disinfecting toothbrushes after every use with hydrogen peroxide. We haven't had any issues with plaque or cavities since that time! It's amazing that such a small change in hygiene can have such a dramatic effect. But it's unconscionable that modern dentistry doesn't understand, or promote, proper hygiene. And we got rid of commercial toothpaste that's loaded with Sodium Saccharin! It literally promotes bacterial growth and tooth decay while you sleep! I often think we're still living in the Dark Ages of medicine...
@MysticBreakdown

Just think if everyone knew all you need are these 2 inexpensive items to prevent tooth decay & cavities. The entire dental industry would be in jeopardy. I feel the baking soda & peroxide is extremely important especially due to the diet of most people. Modern medicine is mostly all about money now rather than educating people on preventives practices.
