This is not uncommon. Here are some tips that might help. Distraction/Pain point - Clenching your fist to create a pressure point is one example of where the mind is essentially focused on another activity and less concerned about what is going on in your mouth. Breathing - Try and breath through the nose rather than the mouth when brushing the tongue. Brushing technique - Brush from the back of the mouth to the front or from side to side rather than from front to back. Avoid an electric toothbrush - Whilst an electric toothbrush might be your choice for teeth, the vibrations and sensation it creates on the tongue surface may make you more sensitive to gagging, use a manual brush or scraper. Softer bristles - If you have a brush with particularly firm bristles, something with more flex and softer to the touch, or maybe of a different material such as rubber will ease the sensation and natural tendency to gag. Scraper, not a brush - Try using different scrapers rather than a brush to see if this gives a different sensation that is more comfortable. Clean on an empty stomach - If you are full the body may react worse to the thought of ingesting more food, whereas the body may be more relaxed if you clean your tongue first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. What works for one will not necessarily work for others. It is a process of trial and error and hopefully one of the above will help desensitise you and your tongue from gagging.

Yes to some extent rising the tongue cleaner (in your case a toothbrush) would then remove some of the fluoride. But it is important to remove the bacteria too from the cleaning device. Plus fluoride gives benefit to the teeth and not the tongue so no need to worry. 👍

Sorry missed that comment. Salt or a salt rinse is an option. It is a common home remedy. The abrasive nature of salt can help remove dead cells, bacteria and other particles. Essentially the particles rub against the tongue to provide a gentle scrubbing action. If you like this method and find it works then you can carry on. It may be worth discussing with your dentist at your next checkup as sometimes there can be an alternate cause of the white tongue. I hope this helps.

Do you use floss? Try brushing your teeth for a full 2 minutes as well. Otherwise you need to change your toothpaste, and go see a dentist for help. I went through the same experience, turns out I just needed to floss and brush my tongue 🤦🏻‍♀️fixed the problem for me.

If you've done everything to clean your mouth and it still smells bad, it could be tonsil stones, or something going on inside your stomach. Maybe have it checked and see what happens. I hope it gets better, cheers

Try some garlic. They also suggest not brushing your teeth for 1 week. you need bacteria to kill bacteria. It worked for me now I can breathe out on people’s face without any problem.

We still respond. Your mouth will naturally produce more saliva quite quickly. However what tends to happen overnight is when we sleep the mouth is less active and usually open a little so air gets in and dries it out. The saliva is not getting rinsed round the mouth like it would when you are awake. Perhaps try brushing your teeth & tongue a little earlier in the evening so there is more time between cleaning and going to sleep. A good tip is to drink a glass of water very soon after waking up to hydrate the mouth and body.

After brushing and scraping your tongue, rinse your mouth with salt and water. Salt is a saliva magnet. It's helps liquidate your mouth.

Xylitol mints work great for me to moisten my mouth. I even keep a little container of them near my bed to use during the night if I wake up with dry mouth. You only need 2-3 at a time. You can also rinse your mouth with water with 1/4 tsp xylitol crystals dissolved in about 3-4 oz water after eating to help control plaque & rinse any food bits out.

Most people don't. However you could use a little bit if you like. This would be more effective when using a toothbrush on the tongue than a tongue scraper.

just keep doing it. when i started cleaning my tongue (a few months ago) it would happen to me too, and really bad, it would even hurt. but now i've gotten a bit used to it, and i can brush around 6-8 seconds before gagging.

Yes sometimes there will still be some white color to the tongue. This will likely reduce in time with regular cleaning or there may always be a bit of a patch.

I have also the same problem !! It is hard to clean the back portion of the tongue !! So there is white coating on the back side of my tongue and the front and centre is perfectly fine !! I have tried once to clean the back portion but actually it is very much tough , and from me it's not possible every day to clean that portion ! What can I do !! Please reply !!

You can gradually try putting the brush/scraper back on the tongue. Over time your sensitivity may reduce. You could use mouth rinses at different times from brushing to help cleanse the tongue.

You will likely not clean it all that effectively and you might damage/hurt the surface from being too aggressive.

I would suggest you speak to your dentist and explain this. There could be a different explanation for the cause. There are certain conditions that can cause the tongue to be white.

It is fine. It probably doesn't need to be brushed this often and you are unlikely to want to brush it any more than that. Different countries do have different recommendations.

There is less 'official' guidance around this than there is toothbrushing. Generally once a day is enough as is the case with flossing.

You're going to far back, your gagging yourself

It is personal preference. Many find it quick 'ticklish' when the brush is turned on. So many drag the toothbrush bristles over the tongue when it is switched off. The main thing/benefit is actually doing some form of tongue cleaning.

If you are doing it as per the video then you are not doing it the wrong way. In theory you are removing the bacteria that could be causing any smells, but by disrupting it you might also be causing the smell to be more obvious. You could potentially try applying a very small amount of toothpaste over the tongue surface to help freshen it up.

With patience. Try and make it a game. Get them to make funny faces and stick their tongue out etc. Great that you want to start early. All the same techniques apply.

Many toothbrushes do have a tongue scraper on the back

It can contribute to tooth decay and bad breath. No direct effect on the throat as far as I know

Good to know you are not brushing hard, as that isn't going to help. Have you potentially considered your diet? Tried any oral rinses? Do you have any cavities that need attention from a dentist?

@@ElectricTeeth I recently went to a dentist, teeth all fine. I use listerine too which helps temporarily. My tongue changing seemed to happen so sudden so out of nowhere I’m panicking a little. Maybe I could change my diet but it’s fairly balanced normally, so all the sugar might’ve been during lockdown which could’ve caused it

Sugar can have an impact for sure. Might be worth trying TheraBreath mouthwash. This is one many swear by for bad breath.

Oh dear. If you have a sensitive gag reflex there are approaches that you can take to help build up a resistance. My first tip would be to just get used to cleaning the front tip of the tongue for now and gradually move further back on the tongue. This will likely take several weeks but you may find that gradually you become more tolerant and your tongue cleanliness improves too.

Whatever your normal shade of pink/red your tongue is. Quite often there is a white/opaque coating on the tongue surface that you are scraping off.

Once a day should be fine. Some will do it each time they brush their teeth. Per session, if using a scraper you might on average want to do about 3-6 passes on the tongue surface.
