This is a step-by-step guide to rebuilding a GM 4L80E transmission. I purchased this transmission from someone off of FB marketplace for $100. This is my first time completely building a 4L80E and going through it with a fine tooth comb! This series was made for my GM ASEP students during the COVID-19 pandemic as part of their virtual learning. It is long and really shows what all is involved in a complete transmission build.

I've got a question for you if you don't mind. how did you get the J-8763 to clear the case on the 4L80E?

I've got a 4l80e build that is giving me issues. Bottom half assembled with new output shaft cluches and bushings and sprag. Play is .020. Output shaft spins freely CW and CCW until I tighten the center support bolt, then it binds. It doesn't want to turn CW (as seen from behind). If I loosen the bolt 1/8 turn then it turns freely again. If I tighten bolt to snug or close to it, then it binds again. I removed the band, but this didn't fix it. I thought maybe the rear output shaft bushing might be cockeyed, so I tap tap tap with block of wood but no difference. The binding doesn't occur in a repeatable position according to output shaft, so it is probably somewhere inside the assembly. Any ideas?

It’s difficult to tell without seeing it in person but I would think there has to be an issue with that center support setup. Maybe something isn’t seated properly below it? Does the hole in the case line up perfectly with the threads on the center support before you install the bolt?

@@PetesGarageandperformance The support bolt and the fluid return fitting line up perfectly. I'm going to take the assembly out of the case and clamp the centersupport with my bench vice in different locations and see if I can replicate the binding in vitro. Open to suggestions.
