I have a Ameritron 606s from HRO and it works great. I use to run a Thunderbolt 305 in the 80's on cb. I don't know a lot about amps but here is what I learned. Before you say you want legal limit 1.5k is your shack set up to run that, some 1k amps require 220v outlet, the 606s runs on 110v, the 606s comes with switching power supply which is added cost. Do you want tube or solid state amp, tubes are more forgiving with swr a little high, solid state will shut down (which is a good thing so you don't burn anything out) which leads into now you have to get a tuner. Which type, auto or manual ALSO it has to be rated for the power of the amp so if you get 1.5k amp your tuner needs to be rated for 1.5k as well, AGAIN more $$$. So it's just not get an amp plug it in and on the air, just a few things to add into the whole amp equation. Those are things you don't figure into total cost. I run my rig at 50-65 watts and get up 300-400 watts.(don't want to push it to the max) Ameritron suggest no more then 100watts on your rig, Always get an amp larger then you want to run your wattage at, so if you want to run at 600 you need at min 800 or larger, Just my .2ct

Yes, Mercury IIIs. I believe Alek has had some issues with the Juma amplifier. But, Mercury IIIs, Expert, Flexradio and Elecraft are great solid state amplifiers. The 811H, 80B and other Ameritrons are good solid tube amps but do require you to tune them. The older ones I am not so familar with but Heathkit is also good if you can find a used one from someone you trust. Great advice on breaking pile ups and honestly, being on the receiving end of a pile up makes you as much of an expert as any of us working pile ups. The only thing you missed there is getting a female to call for you. Wife, sister, girlfriend, mother, hell, even your mother in law, if it is female voice, you have just added 3db 🤣

Good advice on the pileups Mike. I generally just run the G90 at 20 watts, eventually I get through the pileup. I'll try for a few minutes, then move on but come back. Doesn't seem to slow me down. If you're at another park and hunting throw out the park to park, you will generally get the call if the receiver hears that.

I've contested for a long time, and been on both sides of a pileup. The most important thing to me is be polite. Send your call as you normally would. If I hear someone yelling, barging in, stringing out his call, repeating the call or only using the suffix I will absolutely ignore them until the end. I ran a POTA pileup this weekend and a couple times took a weaker signal because they were just calling "normally".

Good Mailbag ! Pile ups: Sometimes it's best to wait until things die down a little. The big guns are usually in there from the start. Once they thin out, it can be easier. If it's a DXpedition, many times a schedule is posted, the second or third day can be easier. Wait till the later or off hours. Find a band that works well for you (probagation taken into account) that is not 20, 40 or 80 meters if they are operating on multiple bands. As Mike said, timing is everything. Adjust your radio for more punch. Maybe a little more compression. Hook up three HF rigs to transmit at the same time through one antenna and call till your power supply smokes....not....lol.
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube Год назад
That's good advise too. Thanks for chiming in. Very true. Once those DX stations are spotted, the bigger stations are all over them like white on rice. I'll have to try TX'ing with multiple radios into one antenna lol!

I agree with knowing the call before trying to bust a pileup, but all too often the station doesn't give it's call very often; it just calls out QRZ. This can be very frustrating when you're trying to do things the right way. W2GJF

Great tips, Mike! Sorry I'm late to the party. As a person that often struggles with breaking the pileup, the advice to listen and figure out how it's run is definitely the right first step. Next advice you gave, that made the most sense to me, is to try different stuff! Here's my personal gem - If I've been at it for a few minutes, one of my secrets is to wait just two seconds after QRZ (not much more, or you risk being "that guy") then kind of slowly/deliberately do the prefix, but REALLY focus on the suffix, like, really annunciate and slow that part down a bit more - maybe with a tiny bit of 'flare' on the last of the suffix. That often gets me the "station ending lima tango" You'll know when you unkey if you need to try it again, but I usually never have to do that one more than two or three times. Anyway, hope that made sense. Sixty percent of the time, it works every time!

What works for me in a pileup: Mic gain to 70-ish, compression on, cup my hand over the mic, say my call once nice and slow. Sometimes it works and sometimes there’s a guy who’s 40 over and you’re just gonna have to hope the calling station picks him to get him out of your way. I’ll also jot down the call and frequency, tune around and find other contacts for a few and then come back to them. Persistence doesn’t mean you have to drop your call every time. The QRP tip is GOLD. I do that a lot for POTA.
@KN4RAY

I picked up a used AL-811 from Huntsville Hamfest. I don’t run it that often, but it is nice to be able to run 500 watts once in a while. It runs off a regular house plug so no need for 220 power.
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube Год назад
That's awesome. Maybe one day I'll join the big boys but honestly, I've not really felt a desire or need for an amp. Could just be that I don't know what I'm missing.

Listen Listen Listen. Having patience is a plus. Usually the right window will appear to get through. If the pile up is huge Ill continue to scan and return in 5 to 10 min. I do agree use proper etiquitte. I often hear stations throwing out their call sign before the target contact has finished their current QSO.

i find being a tail end charley works quite well, it puts call-in mind as being last Hurd and the receiving op tends to remember it easier than being the first one when trying to remember a call to answer
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube Год назад
It's a good technique. As an activator, I don't usually wait till the end, but if the pileup is that thick, sometimes you just can't pull one out and you sneaky tail enders get the contact!

FWIW, I've been a ham for 42 years and have probably heard every possible way to bust a pile up. First is brute force. Nothing like a "California Kilowatt" and ginormous antennas to get the job done! This is the "life is too short for QRP" crowd. Then, there are the QRP ops. Many DX ops will work them *if they hear them*. Here, being a "tailender" and throwing out "QRP" often results in the DX asking "Who's the QRP?" Waiting until the pile dies down works, as long as you don't run out of propagation. This is more common on 10 and 6 meters. Wait too long, and there goes the ionosphere! The October openings on 10 meters were fantastic and a hint of what's to come. The best DX was from Pittsburgh to Cape Town, on 10 meters, using a Siltronix 1011D that was saved from the trash and a Super Magnum CB vertical. I just waited until the herd was done and got through even though it was 2 hours after his sunset.
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube Год назад
I personally like the brute force method myself.
@spaceflight1019
@spaceflight1019 Год назад
@@hamradiotube There is one other way, being obnoxious. A local SK used to hammer his way in until the DX gave up and acknowledged him. He would throw his call out regardless of who the DX was trying to work. Like this: "Looking for 6 and 7 calls only!" "Whiskey Three Bravo Whiskey Uniform" "Looking for 6 and 7 ONLY! Bravo Whiskey Uniform stand by!" "Whiskey Three Bravo Whiskey Uniform. You're 59! 73s." It worked for him...

@@hamradiotube True that. When we cleaned out Ed's basement after he died he had pretty much every DX award on the planet, including many from foreign countries. Ed never got above Technician and spent most of his years chasing DX above 50 MHz. He was a big AMSAT booster. After Novice Enhancement, he made the most out of the lone solar cycle before he died. There was another guy, WA3Giant Purple Rabbit. He chased DX until his marriage came apart. But, he usually got through on one call.

Persistence and proper etiquette. Personally I think the use of an amp is the result of too many people with amps. I've confirmed 125 unique DX entities on SSB using 100 Watts or less on g5rv Jr or random wire antenna. I'm in Minnesota so maybe that helps? Wait until the pileup dies down or catch it before it's hot. Best of luck 73

When working a pileup I’ll alternate through all the different techniques you mentioned. But bottom line is persistence. I have sat on a single pileup for over half an hour before finally getting through. 😮
@RFPews

Nothing worse as an activator with a pile up then some of the rude operators coming in there. I think persistence is key. Sometimes even with an amp it takes persistence. Repeating the call over and over is annoying and I ignore those guys most of the time. Waiting for any opening can get out of control, so can waiting until the end. Some wait so long they end up doubling with the DX/Activator. I just stick with it until I get heard or move on and come back when it calms down.

Busting pileups with 100w. I mostly use my Yaesu FTdx10 so your settings may be listed differently. First I change my TX BPF SEL to either 300-2700Hz or 400-2600 with Processor On but don't overdo it to the level it distorts you. Most of my early dx contacts were using 100w on a 991A and my homebrew fan dipole. Today I do have an Ameritron ALS-600 and I only run about 400w of the rated 600w + that is capable of. My logbooks on QRZ, LoTW will show you that you do not need a lot of power to do DX. All of my contacts are SSB as I don't currently run digital. I love my Heil PR-781 too much! Remember "ANTENNA ANTENNA ANTENNA" is primarily your most important link in the system. 73's KT4RAM

DX pile ups and 100 watts….Before I got my amp and I only had 100 watts, I make sure my transmit bandwidth was either in the mid or sometimes even narrow position and I always crank up my compression to give me more punch. And like you said Mike listen, listen, listen. Is the DX taking the first caller, the loudest caller, or the guy that tags along at the end. You can usually establish some type of cadence after listening for a while. I do like your suggestion for if they call QRP only. Great sneaky idea.😂 Since then I have bought an amplifier from Acom and it has helped out tremendously along with an End fed half wave up at 50 feet. Just my .02 cents 73

I don't think it's the DC, I think it's the fact that the radio settings are set to use a tuner. Either way, just keep it off the using the ATAS and he can do exactly what he was wanting to do.
