In this short video, we explore softening the gaze, also known as soft eyes, or peripheral vision. This is a simple technique that you can use to calm your nervous system and help you reduce stress and anxiety. You can use it at work to prevent burnout, or in your everyday life. It is a particularly useful way of down regulating the nervous system when we are using phones and laptops.

So helpful! I was quite stressed a few months ago and noticed I wasn't really "seeing" my surroundings anymore, just focusing ahead. I feel like this explains why!

Hey Claire, yes we go into tunnel vision when we are stressed, just focusing on one thing. Softening the gaze or stopping to look around is so simple but can be very nourishing. 🤗🙏🏽

This is one of my favorite practices! I do it on my lunch break or when I’m sitting at the park. It’s so soothing and makes me feel so alert ❤

Is it possible to have trouble relaxing and widening one’s gaze during the exercise? And if so what can I do to help my nervous system relax?

This can happen if you are trying too hard. If you like to give things 100% effort then this could be the case. Use less effort. Go slowly and gently. Sit quietly for a few mins beforehand.

@@thebuteykomethod thanks for the reply. I have been had a pretty shitty month mentally everything physically has been pretty great.. we really do suffer in imagination. I’ve been listening to Eckhart which has helped me get the ego in check as well as some shrooms lol. Now I’ve found myself back here after realizing my breathing is causing 95% of my problems and this seems to be the only method that helps me, I guess we really all are different. The feather under the nose was a huuuge lightbulb so thank you for that as well.
