I can see that you started and ended with waste yarn but...what happens next? Do you remove the waste yarn & just have live stitches hanging out?

I tried waste yarn, but I want to make a hat, so what do I do before removing the waste yarn, to secure them, because I lost all my stitches by just removing waste yarn😞
