+The Eye Opener For The Blind Did you not hear the guy int he video? They were getting into his GARAGE and making a mess of things.. and its not like he is hurting them, he was going to relocate them.. plus some can carry sicknesses like rabies. --also on where to buy the cage. Home depot sells them.. I work at home depot and we get alot of them in every day. seems people must have the same idea as you to relocate lil critters like that.. just becareful cause sometimes people's cats and stray / loose dogs might get stuck too.
+The Eye Opener For The Blind Are you kidding me? These animals are the WORST! They can destroy a house in no time. Their spoor (that's poo for city folks) has a parasite that causes Spiro-plasmosiis....which destroys your lungs. They are incredibly destructive to property as well....Catch em, take waay out into the woods and let them go. Don't need to kill them, but they need to taken at least a couple of miles away or they may find their way back....
BP roundworm is not in every raccoons feces. There are less than 30 cases of human infection EVER in history. Unless you eat feces it's extremely hard to contract ;) Every dewormer on shelf kills it, oh and the common puppy roundworm? It blinds 500 kids a year - but I wouldn't recommend driving all your neighbors dogs far away! Raccoons are in our neighborhoods for reasons - reasons that rodents will take over unless we reduce attractants, or that several more raccoons will come along for so removing them is a waste of time & money (unless you're in it for the money).
We live out in the country, so the raccoon population is pretty big. A lot of them have rabies too. I wish I could relocate them, but there is just too many and they keep killing our chickens, so I have no choice but to shoot them.
You know I am dealing with this right now. They are in my attic space. The trapper set a trap and they will locate. My dad immediately said Oh so then it becomes someone elses problem. He isn't wrong, and I am about to use my 9mm. This is costing alot and I can't get up on my roof bc of a bad shoulder so I had to have someone come out. Thankfully all my duct work is underneath my home in crawl space and that is all sealed off with heavy gauge wire or I'd be so LIVID.
@@srchnfrcj You know I have more than one up in roof. Are they smart enough to know their friend is getting trapped tonite and will avoid it? I don't know alot about them except assholes and I don't want them near my house ever again. The one went right up to the night vision camera checkin it out like nothing.
Many raccoons will reach into the traps wired grid and draw the food out. And if you do trap one they have one hell of a growl. Not for weak people , This ia a heavy adrenaline rodent ready to attack.
Had the same problem. Went to Lowes & bought some plastic gutter guard screening & zip tied it around the front area of the cage, so they couldn't reach in & snag the food.
I just caught a racoon with this trap last night. It ate two of chickens, had a standoff with my cat, then tried to get in my kid's room. These traps are great.
I absolutely love my trap. I have the same one. Neighborhood cats kept spraying my front door and my RV. I have been relocating neighborhood cats now!! have moved two of them so far in one week!! My bait, canned tuna on a small paper plate.
A great trap. I have caught 8 racoons in the last 12 days this summer; opposums , a skunk, and more coons in prior years. Two to three miles is not far enough a distance to relocate them for good. The permitted drop off area needs to be further than 5 miles. I have been told. I had to let one go one friday morning because I had to get a friend to her doctor's location 45 miles away and didn't want the coon to have to stay in the cage till I got back several hours later. Especially after having to spent most of the prior night in the cage. After that coon was caught and let go off my porch, the coons started tripping the trap and then reaching through the squares in the wires to eat the cat food from the outside of the cage trap. I have been taking the coons (with permission) to a wildlife preserve 13 miles away and one I took to a state park, with permission.
I would like to know how to easily open that trap and let a live one go? I have this same trap but it does not seem an easy task to let one of these wild nasty critters go especially with the door that does not open so easily. Any special tricks? I have also heard that their sense of smell is crazy good and unless you drive them over 20 miles away at least, they will return?
I've been trapping coons mostly, some skunks, foxes and the odd feral cat and a turtle once. However, after catching a coon, they others wise up and refuse to go in. So, while you will get the odd coon, try the Duke dog proof traps for a more consistent catch if you keep having the issue. They catch skunks and possums as well.
Four things: one, they will tear up your grass once trapped, so if you can, put the trap on concrete. Two, a can of sardines works great. Leave a trail of sardines going into the trap. I have caught three raccoons in three nights this way. Three, set the trap at night but check it early the next morning. Finally, release them at least ten miles away.
Question - I set the trap in a cardboard box and this morning when I found the racoon, the box was torn, there was some blood on the box and the racoon wouldnt really move besides moving his head and tail sometimes. Where did I go wrong?
That was very satisfying I'm waiting for tonight to get mine I just got the cat food think I'll tip over the trash can and put it right next to it. Thanks for sharing
THANK YOU for explaining the locking mechanism. Now I get it. Unfortunately Havahart hired some pretty incompetent people to make their instructional videos who either didn't understand or couldn't be bothered to explain this completely. You did a much better job!
@@jhudiel3303 any animal can carry and transmit diseases, but that doesn't mean they all have such. Most raccoons in particular do *not* have a disease. Rabies for example, is extremely rare. And I didn't say "cruel," I said "psychotic," which is true for most people who lust over the thought of killing.
Chrissie no one said they lusted over killing them. In a lot of states it’s the law to euthanize them because of possible diseases. Totally illegal to relocate because you’re simply making it someone else’s problem and possibly spreading diseases more than just rabies more common is distemper. Do some research before judgement.
I have that trap or one similar but the raccoon was so mad, and kept biting on the wires, the catch thing that keeps the plate up and the door open won't work. I also think the trap wires are so large, it's dangerous getting near the trap because the raccoon can reach out. Why not a thick mesh versus the wires? And then an easier way to open the door for release after he's inside and still hissing! Just learning about traps but I still think there's improvement needed on the design!
I have the exact same trap, works great. Got the possum living under my house the first night with it. named it uncle fester, cause it was trying to live in between the wall and my sauna tub. If I took off the panel, I could see it looking at me like some creepy voyeur. one day later I got it. Then I found out its illegal to possess or relocate (even across the street) possums, raccoons, etc, in my state. Once you've caught it, they instruct you to either kill it or pay to have it killed.
Nice! I had one fall in my trash can outside I should of closed it and moved it somewhere far way from my house but I was stupid and kick the trash can over and he went right back under my deck
I have a colony of raccoons near my house and they sure seem like a bonded family. This trap only lets u get one at a time. Need one that traps many all at once. So that they're relocated together.
I've caught 9 of them so far. They are very crafty. Sometimes they manage to steal the bait without getting caught for 3 or 4 nights in a row before I finally nab one of them. I haul them across the river and release them so they can't come back here.
I got 2 of them traps first time I set them out I used sardines as bate they got the bate and didn't trip the trap so I bated them again and now they won't come near the traps what am I doing worng?
Raccoons are very smart, I always zip tie my bait down, so they have to work at getting the food. Like you I have discovered that I have two more raccoons which I caught on my game camera last night. I have caught one, moved him to the country. They may be trap leery after the first one is trapped, wait a few days before resetting. You are right raccoons can be very, vicious. SO, be very careful when you release them, they can turn on you. I have been bitten twice. Let me add use meat, not peanut butter, most rats ( not all of them) are vegetarians, at least the woodrat A.K.A a packrat
I used this type trap - the raccoon literally tore it apart - I then built home made trap with old bar-be-que grills- works great but is heavy (esp with a raccoon inside)
Cool video. We have a problem with skunks wandering in our garden but since then we've caught between 15 and 20 of them in this trap. We tie a string to the cage and throw it in the irrigation canal for a few minutes before pulling them out and burying them. No more problems!
Here in Pennsylvania once trapped the problem animal may NOT be released into the wild it must be dispatched. So before you run out and buy a live trap in PA at least check your state's laws and be aware you are the one responsible for the animal. If your not willing to take a life, at least here in PA , have it professionally done.
I need to buy one of these traps. Though with my luck, after I relocate the raccoons to the hills, I'll half expect to find a freaking grizzly bear raiding my trash barrels.
They are extremely smart....I had a whole family tearing up my garbage every night I got the trap....trapped one and the next night my garbage tore up again but they never went near the trap..disguised the trap fully still nothing....they are smart
I have the old style home made traps. I caught 3 young raccoons in the same trap. The three followed each other into the trap one behind the other until the door shut. When I first approached the trap I thought that I trapped the biggest coon ever. Then I saw 2 eyes looking at me then 4 eyes then 6 eyes .
Approach the live trap really slow with a tarp, or something else, that you are willing to sacrifice and drape it over the trap. I won't promise it won't spray but at least it won't get you if it does. Transport or dispose of it as you please. Handle the whole unit real carefully when moving it.
Bob, we have a cage like that and it just trapped a raccoon. Is it dangerous to release him? And do you know if animal control will come out to get him?
I've released them before without incident. However, no guarantees. They are wild animals. Don't corner them or otherwise threaten them and you should be ok. Use common sense. The ones I've released just run away...
I doubt he caught it humanely just to kill it. He probably drove several miles away and released it. There are super cheap traps to kill them if he wanted to go that route.
Build a wooden box made from plywood around the trap so the raccoons have no choice but to go in to get the bait. Weigh it down so they can't flip it. For feral cats I put mine inside of a lawn trash can (wedge it to keep it from rolling) as the cats were getting smart and ripping up the feed bag I had been using and sticking their foot in to scoop out the food. Then drape the entrance (leave the end free) with an old blanket to make it nice and dark so they can't do anything but go into the trap to get at the tasty treat. I got two kittens in one go one time. I've trapped multiple feral cats for the T-N-R program. I caught two skunks as well. I was NOT happy about that. I almost got skunked on time, and I'm NOT fond of them. Raccoons are much smarter (about as a smart as a toddler) and stronger than cats. I used a wired down a little can with a little tuna in it as cats and raccoons love fish (and apparently so do skunks). Keep in mind local laws do apply to trapping wild animals so check before you do it as you may have to get a pro involved because you could face legal repercussions if you don't. And killing the animal is a no no in certain areas and is inhumane. If you relocate a lactating mother raccoon her babies WILL die of thirst and starvation. You need to get a humane wildlife pro to do something about it if they are in your attic, barn, or whatever.
What kinda bait did you put in there ? I have this one Raccoon who just won’t leave ! I’ve tried , PB , turkey , etc that thing won’t take the bait ! Thanks
this cage works perfect because the locking/latch mechanism works! I finally got raccoons trapped. The previous cage that looked fancier but the design didn't have this locking latch and the raccoons were able to figure out how to jimmy the door open. Found out with a trail cam. The large marshmallows work to trail onto the cage. I put some dry dog food in a washed tuna can at the back of the cage where they can't get to without going inside.
What happened when you picked up the cage and relocated them? That's the hard part of the situation I'm trying to catch them now they are in my attic very scary
I'm trying to catch one that has eaten 4 of my chickens. He goes around the trap, digs under it, bumps it several times, and eventually trips the switch. They are clever and sneaky critters!
RetroGamingNinja Once they discover an easy meal, they tell all of their friends. I'll bet you have more that one... Yes very clever and sneaky, it's a survival skill! Good luck.
Hi Bob, I enjoy your music videos and I found this video interesting. I had a Havahart trap as a kid and trapped the family cat! I share your respect for wildlife. Because of the horrible, hateful comments on this video I learned how to block users. It's easy and kind of satisfying to block people who absolutely do not share my core values of respecting nature.
Hey Peter, thanks for the great comment! I have over a million views on my channel now so I've learned how ignore jerks and disrespectful trouble makers. Thanks for checking out my music. I appreciate the listen. Thanks again! All the best.
that is what exactly is happening at my house but we have cats we feed our cats outside and then the raccoons come and then yeah so they are right by the garbage to the garbage they take up residence of the house so yeah it's pretty much the same thing you had but I don't have a garage anywhere anywhere where I can get the freaking havahart live trap
All jokes aside theres this raccoon in our neighborhood and it doesnt seem to be afraid of people.. He will walk across the gate or street even if we are outside gathered around a fire pit
what size is the trap? because at the store there is 3 options. there's a super small one for rats, then thres one for squirrel and rabbit, then there's one for fox. witch one should i take?
We have a racoon luving in our attic. Dont know how it got it, but every couple of days it chews holes in the ceiling to try and make its way into the house. Everytime we patch a hole uo it just eats another one in the wall. Going to get this cage and find a way to place it in the roof. Theres no walk in attic installed. So we cant climb up there. I really hope this works because im tired of the little Bastard trying to break in my house to steal my food.
what you did not mention is that a smart racoon can escape 1 of those traps given enough time. there is 1 coming to my nieghbors house which has escaped a trap like that 4 times. i was hoping your video would give some suggstions for us. all your video shows is best case trapping a wise coon would never stay in your trap unless you went out there as soon as it caught him.
Same problem I had the family always arrive to help protect their trapped family members. I had a mother sit be her child’s cage all night protecting. She left in the morning so I could relocate the child. So always buy more than one trap.
Use a rope so you can pull the door open from behind the cage. The animal won't take their eyes off of you so you have to prod them to back out of the cage. This way you stay safe behind the cage. After they back out they'll realize they are free and run off. Good luck.
My raccoons 🦝 bent the side of the cage to squeeze its way out. I did get it from Harbor Freight and we all know their tools work 2-3 times before its trash 😂
My family will often catch and release possums and/or raccoons if we find any near our house. if the trap works then usually, in the morning, the animal is calm, not really doing anything, but one morning we found out that we caught a baby raccoon and this little guy was still going. He growled and snarlef at us and tried digging his way out. It of course didn't work, and he ended up digging a small trench around the cage
I have a racoon in my attic that I've been trying to trap for months I've tried apples and now marshmallows any advice on how to trap it? I'm afraid it's getting weak and i don't want it to die.
scott d no I think it found a way out because it's been a couple months and haven't heard any noises in the attic and there is no smell so it must have gotten out.
