Thank you, Erin, for your great videos. You are an excellent teacher. My husband wanted to crochet a rag rug since his grandmother had tried to teach him to make them about sixty years ago. Your videos were just what we needed and he is now on his 4th rug made from t shirt yarn. Thank you, Mr. Camera Man, as well.

Thank you so much for explaining why you cut the strip then pull it out. Someone else I watched had no explanation why. You always make your directions so clear and thanks to Lyle for his camera skills with no shaking.

Thanks Erin. I've recently discovered that the knots are so much neater when the top corners are trimmed. I'm also making an effort to hide the knot under the stitch whenever possible. If necessary, I'll take out of couple of stitches, and either tighten or loosen those stitches again and hopefully hide the knot under the fabric. Love making rag rugs. Just donated another one to the SPCA St. John's where they make about $180 on tickets for one rug. That makes me so happy. Thanks again.

Good morning Erin, I am just popping in to say thank you for all your wonderful tips on rug making, t-shirt yarn, etc. I have been busy making denim yard/t-shirt yarn/plarn, and I am loving it. I made my first denim rug in April (sorry I can't post pictures) and will post pictures when I get back on my desktop. I've made a bunch of t-shirt yarn and cannot wait to dig in making rugs. I was talking to my father's Nurse PN, and she said that the key to keeping "old age" setting in is to keep busy. I told her that I made a rug from denim strips and she was impressed! When she comes here on Wednesday, I will show her my what I call my "experimental t-shirt" yarn rug. I've learned so much from your videos, made a few mistakes, but learned from them. My homemade yarn is stacking up :) Thanks so much for everything!

I forgot, I am now on the look out for sheets to make sheet yarn too. I have a piece that I used to make a dust ruffle for my kitty's bed and also made "experimental" sheet yarn - I am having the time of my life! I just need to either find the perfect matching sheet, or I will buy a set of king size sheets to work with. I've found that there is a lot of material used in pillow cases and have taken some apart. I find the work relaxing and an excellent deterrent to keep my mind busy. Sorry for the long replies, but I just wanted to pop in and let you know that I loving all the videos, and so much more to learn. Thank You once again.

Its always nice to see you and your rugs. I think that as long as I get a cosy rug or throw for my cabin or flat then I"m happy. I am not much of a TV watcher and stuff like rag rugs or making the big t-shirt fabric beds for the cats makes for something nice to do in the evenings when its cold and it doesn't seem to strain my eyesight like embroidery or cross stitch does now and you know you are going to have something functional at the end. I think that if stuff looks machine made it takes away the charm a bit. ..mind you I need to get my eyes retested because I want to do a few cross stitch samplers for the cabin and I also want to paint some watering cans and wooden furniture with traditional, stylised flowers and I don't know if you have this in the US but traditionally the canal boats had pictures of roses and sometimes castles (but they're a bit more involved) and the roses look lovely painted onto old milkchurns and other galvanised garden containers....you paint them in dark enamel paint like black, dark green or red and do the roses and flowers on the side and they look really authentic and I suppose its because they were hand painted in the first place, they look really nice though. I also like the patterns you see on antique European furniture like the stylised tulips and similar patterns. I used to sell these but I am only wanting to make some recycled furniture look nice now. It's amazing how handy these old crafts are. The cabin has taken ages but I was underestimating how long it takes to build a road into woodland and all sorts of time consuming stuff. I will definitely post a video once it's habitable and I have some of the rugs and throws where they're supposed to be. I will obviously tag you as you are the person who first showed me this on RU-vid (I will obviously take the blame for any glaring mistakes lol!) Thanks xx

Thanks Erin, I will definitely check out your FB page. I have another question: how do you deal with strings from fabric or sheets? Do you think ripping the strips or cutting is better? Thanks , Judy
@RagRugsbyErin
@RagRugsbyErin 6 лет назад
I just pull the strings off as I go. I do not use synthetic sheets. I want them to be at least 50% cotton. I cut and rip. I rip mostly. My husband will use the rotary cutter sometime to cut and speed up my process.

Nice Tutorial for a bloody beginner ;) But how do you change yarn/colors when you want to add a complete new ball of self made yarn? It's difficult to find the end without destroying the ball;) or is it just possible with smaller pieces?

The video called NO SEW Sheet Yarn Tips addresses this issue and gives you ideas on how to handle that situations. I hope that helps. You might want to check out my Facebook page, Rag Rugs by Erin. That's why now, when I "rip and roll" (make the sheet yarn), I make the slits and round the corners but (make my husband) roll the strips without attaching them. They still stay nice and flat and organized, and it just takes a sec to connect them Erin's way when you crocheting and get to the end of a strip. Happy New Year!

I am working on one as we speak. I have tried a couple different methods and trying to decide which one is the easiest to teach so others can understand. It will be on an oval rug though.

Ohhh!!! I never thought i was gonna get reply! ... well miss Erin u r a doll and u made me happy today! Thank u for taking time to show love 👍 and I learned how to do these rugs on utube with u. It has helped me to pull myself out of this pity party of aging! It sucks and I'm alone. And alone with my thoughts and that alone can draw anyone nuts. I didnt know how to crochet my mom always tried showing me my whole life, but it was too difficult etc ect. I suppose there is a time for everything because I found u on utube and I wasn't even looking, Lol u had these bitchen rugs and u explained it so well that it clicked. So where I'm going with this miss Erin, is that it pulled me out of a dark place. I felt useless and in the way and forgotten etc etc etc ....u made me feel cool again. I started to take this project down at the beach and not for attention but so I have something to do while I'm there and everybody stops and is fascinated by the whole thing. I look like some expert. Haha thank u for being so cool and caring and wanting to teach. And u explain so nicely! I feel useful again and u r the reason. Hugs to you teach!
