In this video we got a 2018 Honda Accord with 1.5L Turbo. That loses coolant on daily basis and occasionally over heats when coolant gets too low. The car runs and drives perfectly fine but sometimes it won’t start after it cools off from a long trip. I will show you step by step how to replace the head gasket on that car. Make sure to watch part 1 and part 2 of the video

My son’s 2018 Honda accord 1.5l turbo just did this at 82,000 miles. The five yr. warranty had expired as well. Took it to the dealership they estimated a 4000-6000 cost to repair it. I say all that to say this, thank you for the videos (parts 1&2) on this issue with this engine! Because of your videos and instructions within them gave me enough confidence to repair it myself at home. Keep in mind all I ever done is oil changes and break jobs on my vehicles, so I considered myself unable to fix this car on my own. This channel is definitely a blessing and saved me and my family 1000’s of dollars so I can’t thank you enough! I’ve liked and subscribed without hesitation to your channel and its videos, what you teach and put out is value filled and helps families like mine! Blessings from our Lord Jesus to you and your family!

If anyone watching this is going to DIY, make sure you have plenty of zip lock bags. Label the bags and put the corresponding nuts and bolts in the bag. For example, label a bag intake bolts, and put all the bolts for the intake in that bag. This will help tremendously on re-assembly.

My 2018 Honda Accord 1.5 turbo is way over 125,000 miles and I've had no issues at all! Well i try to make sure that I change my oil ( Honda synthetic or Mobil 1) on the recommended 5,000 miles or even less and get only 93 octane gasoline plus I try not to abuse the car and I drove it normally as much as possible. The only issues I've had were my brakes.

@Bfg-yi2id
@Bfg-yi2id 9 месяцев назад
@@winchellsit’s a combination of things. The stock boost pressure on these cars is high, 16.5psi on the civic and more for the accord the stock head bolts on the 1.5t cars are made from poor quality metal that stretches over time (causing the head to lift) and they are thin to begin with. People have also said that the torque on the head bolts is not always uniform from the factory (causing uneven clamping force) Honda added passages between the cylinders on the block that allows coolant to flow. Ford tried this sort of design and had the same issues with the head gaskets a few years back The stock turbo on the 1.5t cars spools very quickly, leading to more torque down low (getting the car off the line faster) but also increasing the strain on the head bolts I upgraded to ARP head studs on my 18 civic for peace of mind. If you don’t drive your car hard and is mostly highway driving you may not have much issue, but if there is a lot of city driving or you abuse it regularly it’s more likely to happen Also use the highest quality gas you can, detonation from using 87 is not your friend

Great video I haven’t had a problem with mine it’s at 200K but if I do will definitely be using your video as a reference . I think all they had to do was design the block with a closed deck and bigger head bolts and it would have been a bulletproof engine and they should have seeing as it’s a small displacement turbo engine but they wanted to save a small amount of weight and money instead I guess .

I have the following question: is it possible to remove the timing cover after you removed the valve cover, i.e. a post accident the car has a broken engine mount on the passenger side as well as pointy mount on the timing cover. I was hoping to remove and replace the timing cover without doing the entire head gasket procedure.

Hello i believe the problem with this engine is the fuel being added. The 1.5 turbo is a 10:1 compression engine and quite high for a turbo engine. There for 87 octane fuel is too low and with the high compression created detonation. The head gasket has a coolant passage between between the cylinder wall so thats the weak point. With the combination of detonation and the design of the head gasket creates this failure. My advise is to use 91 or higher octane on these engine for proper combustion.
@SirUncleCid
@SirUncleCid 11 месяцев назад
It's actually pretty wild they suggest 87 is ok in the manual.
@dennisd1778
@dennisd1778 9 месяцев назад
Compression is not the issue , people are using theses engines as high performance and running them hard and not maintaining them ,any turbo engine is under pressure. And needs top quality fuel and not regular 87 and high quality synthetic oil ! Anyway these engines were designed for fuel economy And regular driving
@ikramghias2730
@ikramghias2730 9 месяцев назад
Do you think using 89 would help compares to just 87. I'm a student so it would really suck to have to put 91 especially when the gas prices increase.
@nickwackenhuth1584
@nickwackenhuth1584 Месяц назад
@@dennisd1778all of you have the wrong idea, it’s actually a lot simpler. Honda made really weak headstuds for this motor. The turbo pressure is enough to make the frail headstuds stretch and the head actually lifts off of the engine a few mm. This is enough to allow coolant past the gasket and for it to unseal and fail. Preventative measures for people building this engine like me: ARP headstuds. On a stock car it should be fine with stock studs but Honda failed on these ones. My car runs 28psi of boost (stock is 19psi on the civic si I believe) and have had no issue for 40k miles

@@swright4000 the cvt transmission is the least of your problems same as the oil dilution people complained about. Even the turbo in the 1.5t is fairly reliable. The 1.5t has a design flaw mainly the head bolts being too weak to handle it causing it to lift. Honda saying 87 octane is fine is part of the issue. The 1.5t can be reliable but it cannot be driven hard like at all. I wouldn’t drive this fast ever to be honest. and it needs 91 octane. To me that is a design flaw

2018. Head gasket already? So much for 'Honda reliability'...

The 1.5T is the problem. Small engine, too much power.

@@mitchhedberg4415 dude, Toyota's 1.6L turbo is designed for high performance usage from the get go, Honda's 1.5L turbo is just a hoped up and overworked Honda Fit engine.

Shame on Honda for replacing the K series 2.4 with this jacked up lawnmower engine. The Accord is too heavy for this 1.5 so drivers are demanding too much from the motor and Honda skimped on the head gasket and head bolts.

The whole engine is on the weak side, nothing overbuilt.

I don’t see any effectiveness of these grove to begin with that required them to integrated in the design of this engine other than a future intended failure point to generate repair and service revenue for Honda, shame on them. If they wanted a cooler combustion burning, either lower the boost or add fuel and forget about the EPA numbers. Crazy such a nice engineering masterpiece ruined with this nonsense.

My 2020 accord 1.5t has 121k miles. Yesterday I noticed all the coolant was gone in the coolant reserve bottle. Other than that the radiator is still full to the top when I took the cap off. Iv noticed zero issues with the engines performance yet. But I sure hope that's not a sign of the head gasket starting to go. My car has been maintained perfectly and 95% of those miles are highway driving. I drive 140 miles a day to my job all interstate

Please file a claim with Honda USA and report to the Attorney General. So we can get a recall

@@RemingtonScarborough no issues. I filled the reserve bottle halfway full and the level hasn't changed in the last 15000 miles. Still no issues relating to head gasket. Idk perhaps the bottle was low from the factory
