How to change the cambelt on a KV6 engine and spending as little as possible. Also with no specialist tools. If you have the basic tools like sockets, torque wrench, some extension bars and a plumbers spanner(!) then it can only cost £45 if you are lucky. This is what it cost me and here is the video proof. Use the ebay links below as a starting point to look for cheap parts.

Thank you so much. I'm doing a 2004 Freelander SE timing belts and water pump and I'm so glad that I finally found your video because everyone I had found was outta the vehicle and showing all the proper tools to use. I've been trying to figure out someway to cheat it as you did Because I couldn't find the alignment tools anywhere without having to buy them for just one job use. THANK YOU & May y'all have a great and blessed year to come.

Im watching this video just now and im happy you showed us. Thanks for that. When i took of the tensioner both the camshaft sprockets turned to the right ( a couple of teeths)... What now!!!! I hope everything is still good inside the engine

@comeinhandynow 6 месяцев назад
That’s to be expected, just make sure you set up the cam timing correctly when you reassemble it all. If necessary you can assemble in a position with more relaxed cam positions as long as it all lines up correctly when in the correct timing check position.

@@riteshsoekha6075 Try a few different ways of fitting the cambelt with the tensioner loosely fitted, and the idle pulley also loosely fitted, it should allow enough slack to make it easier.

+tyrespinningfreak Thanks, the car is running great! I did also recently regrease the bearing in the auxiliary belt pulley using similar methods to that shown. More money saved! I missed it off the things I did in the video. It seems that after about 100k miles most bearings are in need of a grease and doing that saves having to replace them later on.

These camshafts are not designed to be held at one end while torquing the other end. There are many documented cases of the camshaft cracking due to this approach and not necessarily being immediately apparent. If you want an engine rebuild then follow this method.
@comeinhandynow
@comeinhandynow 8 лет назад
+John O Thanks for your comments. Interesting and surprising that what turns out to be 60-70Nm of torque would have that effect on the camshaft. After all the camshaft is a lot thicker than the bolt that is being tightened. No harm done on the car I worked on as still going strong, but I take your point and it would be better to grip the sprocket at the same end as being tightened. If you have any links to the documented cases It would be interesting to read.

So how on earth you did torque the stretch bolts at cam gears according the data using the old bolts(stretched already) plus using thread lock and cut corners in order to save money(peanuts). Dreadful and typical idiotic perception- attitude of a miserable Scrounge guy.

Thank you! I am sniffing around for a Rover 75 V6 and as @Warren Loveridge points out, your last belt change means nothing unless you, or someone you can trust, has done it. I have never liked highly-stressed engines because they often lead to highly-stressed owners. As I've only ever owned cars built in or before 1979, it's not something to be looked forward to.
@comeinhandynow
@comeinhandynow 7 лет назад
Thanks, good luck in your search. I wouldn't say the kv6 was highly stressed, it's only revving to 7k not 10k like some. I rather like the kv6 sound and the way the power builds in two waves with a boost at 3k and 4K due to the VIS valves opening. On that point a look over my video on VIS valves would be worthwhile if you haven't already.

MGZS 180 Faults weak door handles Inlet manifold internals Vis motors water in boot Door cards Roof rail corrosion
@comeinhandynow
@comeinhandynow 6 лет назад
I can’t argue with you there. However most are easy to fix and also not uncommon on other cars. Kia Sedona also known for breaking door handles (I had no handles break on my 120k miles mgzs BTW). Yes door card material needs regluing. Also roof material sags, like a lot of old cars. Water in boot usually caused by rear light seals, easy to remove and reseal. Interesting bit on the manifold poor reliability injected by German re-engineering. From Wikipedia: “The 1998 redesign of the KV6 by Rover Group under BMW included replacing the original metal inlet-manifolds and butterfly valves, with plastic units manufactured in Germany. The redesign also involved replacing the metal thermostat housing with a plastic unit. A costly but uncommon side-effect to using plastic components are breakages in the VIS (Variable Inlet System) butterfly valves that are mounted inside the non-serviceable inlet manifold. The second common fault is failure of the thermostat housing (often failing along the mould line), that will lead to gradual but rarely complete loss of coolant. A third common fault is oil contamination in the VIS motors that are mounted on the sides of the inlet manifold and control air intake. Damage to the butterfly valves or VIS motors is limited to causing a rattling noise in the manifold or minor loss of power at certain engine conditions.”
@user-iz4pb8jg4d

This engine should have been designed to use a timing chain given the huge cost and labour of replacement’ many MG zs180 have never had belts replaced ‘ it’s a higher cost to manufacture a car using chains but compare to shit mass produced car like a Nissan micra that used a chain it beggars believe, so many other design faults on this car. having owned one it was a love/hate thing with me.
@comeinhandynow
@comeinhandynow 6 лет назад
Often chains create more problems due to them stretching or the chain guides becoming worn. As an example, I have a mk2 bmw mini, with the Peugeot/ BMW engine as used in the BMW 1 series and others. It had to have the whole timing chain, sprockets and guides, replaced at 15,000 AND 45,000 miles! Also water pump, back pipe and thermostat housing needed changing at 75,000. It also smokes oil, suspect turbo oil seals. So that bmw engine is far less reliable than the rover kv6. The two main weaknesses in the kv6 are the plastic thermostat housing and the plastic inlet manifold/vis valves. Both of which are as a result of bmw’s influence while they owned rover. The kv6 was however a better engine than the Honda v6 that it replaced in rovers, being power powerful, more economical and lighter and it didn’t suffer from rattley tappets like the Honda v6.

great video, very informative. i need to do the same job on my car and also renew the thermostat, it looks like doing the thermostat first will give better access to the rear cam belts, am i right?

You NEVER change the belt without changing all the rollers and the water pump!
@comeinhandynow
@comeinhandynow 6 лет назад
Except I just did! The point of this video was to not only show how to change the cambelts but show how to do it at very low cost. Regreasing of the original pulley bearings was ok as they were in good condition still. As the car only cost £300 and then spending close to that figure on a cambelts change would seem out of proportion. I would otherwise normally agree with you. However changing still good parts for new is not always best for longevity. Case in point, I changed a perfectlly good water pump for a new one on another car and two years later the new water pump had failed and was leaking badly. I had kept the old one and put that back in and it was then fine! Some poor quality aftermarket parts out there I guess.

By the way, 2.5 years later it was still running fine, as sweet as a nut.
