so, my bike was running OK, but the compression was a bit low. Last week I just checked the timming and my front cyclinder was about 4 teeth of. So i ajusted it, and valve clearance too. But now i can hear a loud tic tic noise from the top part of the engine after engine warn up. Should i put back in the wrong timming position again? Thank you for the video, As always, a great Help

Hello. Definitely don't put it back in the wrong position, however double check that you have adjusted the valves at the right position (timing marks) It is possible to adjust them at bottom dead center, so check to make sure you have done it right. Slight ticking noise is acceptable when the engine is hot

Hello. I'll be completely honest with you. I have never touched, or seen a 125 Virago so I can't say, however the basic principle of engine timing is very similar for all internal combustion engine. You should have a mark on the flywheel, and an other mark on the camshaft gear or sprocket which need to be aligned. So basicaly yes it is the same way to check on any motorcyle/car jut the marks maybe will be in a different place and might look different. I hope this helps a little.

Very interesting, but no gasket under the front cover ? I am in the process of rebuilding my XV535 engine, I have done a few vids on it, and I don’t remember whether there was a gasket under the front cover or not, but in the replacement gasket set, there is only one. Do you know if this is standard, otherwise I would have assumed it was just missing rather than deliberate. It’s a bit odd that there is one on the rear but not on the front. Did you use any sealant when you refitted the cover ? Thanks.

Hello. Yes I was wondering the same, and you are right there is only 1 gasket in the gasket kit, so looks like there isn't any for the front, which is odd. I will double check on the parts drawing and if that confirms it then it is designed like that. I haven't been able to do anything on the bike in the last few weeks, nearly a month now due to personal reasons, but will start up soon and carry on uploading the videos...

@@MidlandCruiser I guess it is due to the fact the breather and baffle plates are on the rear it needs extra sealant. I assumed I just had one missing in the kit, but seems it’s meant to be like that. I’m just about to inspect the heads and get them back on, so I’m glad I spotted your channel and saw you doing this procedure,

@@memybikeni9931 yes seems that way. I will have to use gasket maker I'm afraid...I don't like it to be honest. I also plan to take off the heads, polish the valves, clean the combustion chamber and obviously the outside of the cylinder. I am waay behind with the project at the moment but hopefully will be back on it soon...

@@MidlandCruiser I’m in the process right now of the cylinder head strip down. I have to say I have found a couple of odd things on this engine, that make no engineering sense but I’m not an engineer so I assume I’m just not that clued up as I think 😂

@@memybikeni9931 some things can be overcomplicated and manufacturers do it sometimes, however after thinking about it deeply usually can be figured out why they did what they did...never underestimate yourself, if you at least willing to give it a go you are better than most people out there😉👍

Hey buddy, got another question for ya. In your video @5:20+ do you the the timing mark on the sprocket should be a quarter tooth before the TDC mark on cylinder head and the timing mark "|" in the timing hole with the timing mark on crankshaft cover. Do you think it matters and could it be changed by putting a quarter tooth in front so when turning the crankshaft it would then align correctly? Idk I'm thinking about trying it but didn't know and wondered what you think.. like, where it is a quarter tooth before in order to get the sprocket and mark lined up you have to move the crankshaft bolt clockwise a little more which would make it advanced??? And if it should be dead on but let's say it's before or after is that just from chain slack or tensioner etc... ? Thanks bro and if I just can't get it but a quarter tooth and it should be a let's say for now a quarter tooth after the timing mark on head would that be ok like you said. Thanks bro!!!!

Hi there. It should line up near perfect, however it will depend on wear and tear. If the chain is streched (worn) a bit, then it will be out, and that is fine. A ¼ tooth won't matter at all, to be fair my 1100 is out about a ¼ , and still running fine, and has even compression in both cylinders. Also you can't actually move it by a ¼, only 1 tooth increments. I hope this helps

@@MidlandCruiser definitely helps, so if the mark on you front cylinder in this video would be normal? So it being a quarter tooth before TDC is maybe better than a quarter tooth or more after TDC. See as you was turning the crankshaft in the video the cam sprocket mark was a quarter tooth before the mark on the head with mark lined up perfectly in timing hole. Yeah I tried to change a quarter tooth and spent way to much time lol 😂. I'm wondering too what you think about it if CS was past the pointer mark on head not before would that mean it's advanced?? You always help all of you have helped me greatly!! So appreciated 👍

@@karlh4313 to be honest I have seen bikes running (noy very good) but running with the camshaft in the wrong place by a tooth. Compression was lower, that was the sign so I checked the timing and it was out (1 tooth advanced) . I think you shouldn't worry about that ¼ tooth misalignment, it won't affect it. If you want it perfect you'll have to change the chain to a new one, but the money and time doesn't warrant the result, which more than likely would be negligible.

You need to take off the gear from the camshaft and move it a teeth or 2, dpends how much it is out. Also need to take out the cam chain tensioner to have enough slack so you can move the gear around...👍

That is correct, yes there are 2 chains. 1 for each cylinder

I bought this full kit, because I'll need most of them by the time I finish, and I find it better value than only buying a few gasket you need for 10 quid each ending up paying 20-30 for them. Hey, a question please: only one of my cylinder is out of timing (distribution chain jumped some 4 teeth), while the other is still in place. I have to free the valves completely in order to put the camshaft in the right place again right?

Hello. 4 teeth is a lot however these engines get away with quite a lot so you could be fine after re setting the timing (meaning there is no bent valve). Just take out the cam chain tensioner when the problematic cylinder is on TDC then remove the gear from the camshaft, re set the gear in the chain where it should be and put it back on the camshaft, put it all back together and you should be fine....If it jumped 4 teeth though the nyour chain tensioner maybe failing so worth a check

@@firebird14420 you mean you checked it and now locked or moved the camshaft gear and then it's locked...if the later then you clearly did something wrong.. Without knowing what have you done, it is really hard to help. I assume you moved it so take out the tensioner and put it back where it was, then try it. Do not force it, if you need to turn it backwards to loosen it up, do it.

@@firebird14420 if the bike was running fine or at least running..then no you shouldn't loosen up the valves if let's say you are out 1 tooth. After correcting the timing and re setting the valve clearance it should be fine. Obviously you need to take out the tensioner to be able to move the camshaft gear to the correct position. Then put it back for the valve adjustment. Make sure you adjust them at the correct marks..."T" for rear, and "I" for front NOT "F"

Mine are about a half a tooth off but I couldn't get it to be dead on why not do you think? The tension guides feel good.

Hi. The virago has an automatic mechanical tensioner fitted, which basically only can go 1 way so it keeps the chain tight. If it reaches the bottom then you'll need a new chain because it is streched too far. If the chain looks good maybe the tensioner is faulty, you can fit a fully manual one if you want to (will need periodical checks) , or take the original out and have a look, maybe got stuck and need freeing up. I haven't touched the tensioners on my 535 but I did the 1100 and they can go wrong sometimes however not very often. Hope this helps

Hello. No the TDC for the front is a single line and not the F mark. The "F" marks the firing range, not the TDC

You have to take out the cam chain tensioner and move the chain on the camshaft gear. Some cases you'll need to remove the gear from the camshaft to be able to move it a teeth.

Hi...usually if the engine was running fine I'd double check it to make sure I did it right, also only turn the engine clockwise and never the other way. If it is still wrong and looks like could be 1 teeth then you have to take out the cam chain tensioner, loose up the camshaft sprocket and move it 1 teeth the way it needs. Put it all back together and double check the timings. If it's only out a little bit, like 1/4 or 1/2 teeth than there is nothing you can do but to live with it. My 1100 is out about 1/4 teeth and cause no problems...so if it's not a big difference and the bike running fine, then leave it, and enjoy 😉👍
