Learning how to check your motorcycle's charging system is way simpler then you might think and at most takes about 1 to 2 minutes. Learning how to diagnose a "no charging scenario" is where it tends to get a little trickier. Regardless of the case, I will be showing you how to quickly and effectively check your motorcycle's charging system. I hope you are able to learn these important steps, as well as some important fundamentals to better understand exactly what it is you're testing.
*I fudged up and said vt1100 :) Trust me, I am aware!

Hi Cody, just a quick note on analog systems without benefit of modern diagnostic equipment. A little over a year ago I was having problems with charging system on my 2000 V Star 1100. Without going into it deeply, lets just say that my battery kept dying, the Regulator/Rectifier kept burning out and once even started a fire. My initial knee kick response was to change the stator which I did. Being short on cash I was forced to get one on ebay which I now see was a total mistake, but you live and learn. To continue, after the third RR failed, I came to the conclusion that my problem was the stator and so got one from a local motorcycle salvage yard out of a running motorcycle. This solved the issue and has never returned. All this after spending major coin on a local dealership shop who in the end could only suggest a wire harness change. They had been working with me and despite my suggestions to thoroughly check the stator they could only come up with the harness change. My misgivings about this action were supported by the fact that the problem continued, a burned out RR and a dead battery. It was then that I took stock of what had conspired and the results then decided to change the stator again, this proved to be the answer. I mention all this just to illustrate how reasoning and deduction can win the day in ANY trouble shooting scenario.

Hi, MD great videos keep em comin. I m restoring an 80' Suzuki GS 850 GL, have replaced reg/rect. (new), CDI box (used), Stator (new), Accel coils & wires (new), New plugs . New battery. It starts quick and runs great, BUT for only 4 to 5 minutes max,then it will start lightly popin' (backfiring) CDI gets very hot and finally engine dies.IF I throttle it hard will struggle to run a bit longer but CDI will start smoking I fried the previous CDI that way. IF I come back after about 30 mins. It will start and will run for another 4-5 mins CDI gets blazing hot and dies. Help!

Hi I am having a serious problem with my 2014 Yamaha R6 and I believe it's totally electrical basically the rectifier harness is totally burnt and shout out. Now I tried to rewire it myself and I was actually going to hardwire it to the rectifier but I just ordered a new rectifier and a new harness so I'm going to take it to the mechanic this week and get that done get the stator put in and get that electrical situation figured out. Now my question to you is number one the wires were all messed up and they were shorted out my 40 boss solenoid fuse and I knew right away that that's what that was because the buyers were all out and a total mess. I rode the bike a little bit today with the rectifier on hooked and didn't have any problem with the bike starting up or Anythink and I know that's not a good thing to do but the battery is brand new and I keep the battery on the battery tender every and I know that's not a good thing to do but the battery is brand new and I keep the battery on the battery tender every and I know that's not a good thing to do but the battery is brand new and I keep the battery on the battery tender every month I and I know that's not a good thing to do but the battery is brand new and I keep the battery on the battery tender everyday and also have a three month warranty on this battery so if it goes I can get a new one. Now my first question to you is what would make that rectifier harness burn out like that is that the sign of a bad stator? And my second question is I have a 2004 Yamaha YZF R6 and the stator wire doesn't directly go into the rectifier there seems to be some type of wire or relay harness that is 5 wires that plugs into the rectifier so if the 2004 Yamaha R6 stator wire is only 3 plug and play and that plugs into another three where do the five wires come from. and when I bought this new stator I also bought a new rectifier with the new harness what y'all be having a professional put on for me. please if you can get back to me ASAP so I know what's going on with my bike thank you so much I love you videos and cheers from Philadelphia Brian

Mine is 12.6 with bike off and about 12.4 at idle. At about 3-4k rpm goes higher, 13.15 volt max. I’m assuming all is good but don’t understand why my battery went on full charge with the Battery Tender after a ride. I’m wandering if these old 80’s Hondas can’t produce much charge unless cruising at higher rpm

HI,Nice bit of explaining cheers, if you rev the engine and the meter stayed at 13 something volts not 14 plus does that mean that the regulator is dead, cheers DAVE
@TheMotorcycleMD
@TheMotorcycleMD 7 лет назад
dewi williams Hey man! Not necessarily, regulators typically fail in two ways. One being they don't regulate at all and your charging system skyrockets to 17volts when the rev is held above 3k. Or it does not allow any charge. If your resting battery voltage is 13v and when you hold the rev above 3k for a couple of seconds and it stays at 13v. Then yes. there maybe something going on with either the stators output or the regulator. But, if your battery's resting voltage is below 12.4v and when you do the rpm test and it only gets to 13v then you may need to either replace the battery or have it charged over night with a load test put on it. The charging system struggles to charge bad batteries, which is why I can say 100% that your Reg is bad. Hope that makes sense!
@dewidiamond40
@dewidiamond40 7 лет назад
TheMotorcycleMD Cheers for that awesome explanation , the battery is new , I had a light version of the meter showing about 13.+v and when you have the lights on whilst riding the battery went flat after about 3 miles down the road, also when you have the light on it shows 12+volts on the tester , I have the Honda pan European st 1100 1997 cheers again
@TheMotorcycleMD
@TheMotorcycleMD 7 лет назад
dewi williams Interesting. I would check out the connection from the stator to the reg/rec. those have a tendency of melting on that model. I would also check through my other charging system videos so that you can properly test the stator out as well. I have replaced a countless amount of stators and harness connections on that model. Good luck! Keep in touch! Be sure to subscribe to the mailing list at www.MotorcycleMD.com where you will find full blog write-ups on this topic as well!

I have a 97 Honda shadow spirit 1100 (vt 1100). I’ve owned for 9 years and I’ve replaced approx 8 batteries. Recently I started to investigate as to the reason I’m replacing so many batteries. I checked the open voltage many times and the result are the same. Battery output cold engine off 12.6-13 volts. Start bike and it jumps to around 13.8-13.9 at idle. Clymer Manual indicates 13.9-14.9 is normal voltage output to the battery. When RPMs are increased voltage drops to 13.4-13.5 volts. I replaced the rectifier/ regulator and stator and the results are exactly the same. Any suggestions?

@ascher40
@ascher40 2 года назад
1/ Disconnect the plug coming from the stator. 2/Put a meter on AC across each terminal in turn with bike running. (3 main wires) If voltage goes UP as you rev it, stator is ok. Problem must be in Regulator.

Hi! My yamaha R3 got charging problem when i ride it in hot weather or traffic. But going strong in night or cool weather. It got some burn in rectifier plug also. What would you recommend me to do?
@TheMotorcycleMD
@TheMotorcycleMD 6 лет назад
Mount the reg/rec in a spot that can can be cooled easier, not tucked in somewhere silly. Even if you need to extend the wire loom for it. Then I would use really good weather proof bullet connectors and make separate connections. Burn in the rectifier plug means loose connection or a high resistance. Try all that!!

The stator is really bad or the connector wires are grounding to the bike or you have a short to ground somewhere else on your bike.

I had a car that when it was only charging on the battery. I had a voltmeter in the cigarette lighter and it began flashing when below 11.7v. was able to catch it in time before the car left me stranded and changed out the alternator. Yesterday the battery ran completely flat on my Yamaha Bolt and took 8 hours for roadside service to come and $250 to get towed home. Want to make sure it's actually the battery because a new one worked fine.
