In this episode, Aaron goes over many of the possibilities for selecting a transmission and transfer case in a Fummins swap project. Whether you decide on an automatic or a manual, the budget, build type, and frame all play a major role in what is the best overall selection for a transmission and transfer case. Sometimes, things don't go as planned. If you are interested in the full build thus far, check out the Fummins swap playlist link below and check it out!

For a transfer case that's a real bargain nowadays and and that's a rebuilt one. My old mechanics teacher taught me rebuilt is better than new

The NVs were also in the GMs but I think the gearing was different. My K1500 had an nv3500.

My advice on transmission swaps is spend as much time as necessary on a transmission ratio rpm calculator. Spicer has a very nice one that is free on their website. There is nothing worse than doing all the work and end up with something that is horrible to drive. My father did just this with a truck he Cummins swapped. This was back before Cummins swaps were a thing. He took the 460 out of a 1987 f250 and put a rotary pump 5.9 in it. He had a friend that was once an engineer at Cummins and was able to get part numbers for the adapter plate and flex plate to bolt the Cummins to the C6 transmission. It is horrible to drive on the highway. The rpms are through the roof and it also defuels up there too. So it's obnoxiously loud and has no power going down the highway. I swapped a Zf6 into my 2007.5 Dodge that had a 68rfe. It turned out really good. I plumbed the transmission into the existing automatic transmission cooler. I also added a short throw shifter tower and dual disk clutch. The time spent with the calculator was worth it. I'm also building a 1933 Dodge 1.5 ton truck that will be getting an 08 6.7 Cummins and an Eaton-Fuller fs 6 speed that I'm going to convert to a fso overdrive. The overdrive ratio is only .78 but with running 4.10 gears and very tall tires it should get me where I want to be. I would like to have an automatic but I want to spend the money on the engine instead of a transmission to hold the power. The end goal is to dyno over 1000 hp at the wheels but get as close to 1500 as possible. I'm going to be limited on room to mount turbos and the second cp3 that will probably be necessary to get there.

This is really good advice and I agree across the board. I went back and forth on this and ended up with 354s, 35s, and the nv5600OD. Hopefully the 354s were the right call, time will tell.

How's the ZF6 behind the 6.7? Never heard of anyone putting one behind a 6.7, i think almost everyone swaps in a G56 due to it being an easy swap due to being a factory option.
@jamessheets9205
@jamessheets9205 Месяц назад
@@wyattlewis8671 I went with a zf6 because it has center support bearings that keep the shafts from separating and shearing off gear teeth that can happen on high HP/tq trucks with a G56. The Ford zf6 (Chevy version doesn't) also has a lubrication pump with external fittings that I have plumbed into my existing automatic transmission cooler. The shifter tower is about 2.5-3 inches closer to the dash than the G56. I used the destroked Cummins conversion adapter and a south bend dual disk clutch and flywheel. I also used the south bend g56 hydraulics, removed the clutch actuator and installed an aluminum one for a zf6 I got from Napa. It fit like it was made for it. There are a bunch of other little hurdles I had to overcome one at a time. I had problems with the 68rfe and had a local shop rebuild it with one of the first versions of the Suncoast kits for it. It was always doing something weird and never gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling. Now I put it in the gear I want and it stays there. Plus a Cummins just feels right with a manual transmission, well unless you're in stop and go traffic.

You say the ZF5 wasn’t strong enough. I have them in my 95 Powerstrokes with Banks turbo. 275k miles no problem. Not sure how much HP to torque the Fummins puts out in comparison
@DentsideDepot
@DentsideDepot Месяц назад
this 12v will make 1,300 ft pounds of torque. The ZF5 may work fine with a stock motor of course, but not in this application. All the transmissions break at some point, its just that the big 6s have a better chance of lasting longer. Love the ZF5, its going in my next build and we have one in our wrecker

A 1300 lbs/ft torque 6BT Cummins is *NOT* a common engine at all!!!!
@DentsideDepot
@DentsideDepot Месяц назад
@@linctexpilot8337 They make that much power just with minor fuel mods and a better turbo, so pretty common if your running a 12v. This is why the ZF5 would not work in this application, as I explained.

Are you or can you add a brace for the transfer case? I’d be a bit Leary of it just hanging on the back of the transmission. Especially if I was going to be really hammering on it off road. When the ZF first came out they were terrible. I can’t tell you how many I returned to Ford under warranty. And the Ford Cummins had a recall for the front cover and gaskets and crank seal. After while we just built kits in the parts room so we didn’t have to go to all the separate bins for the parts. But I did get lots of aluminum front covers for scrap.
@DentsideDepot
@DentsideDepot Месяц назад
So the 241 and the 271 are both designed to hang off the case. They are very lights, especially compared to the NP205 of course. If I was doing serious off road work for sure the 205 with its own set of mounts would be the better option for sure. In this case, its not needed. The ZF5 S-42 was not even strong enough for the non-turbo IDI, and when the Powerstroke came out they melted almost instantly, hence the s-46 and then the ZF6. We have a ZF5 in the wrecker with an IDI and a Dana 80 rear, its a solid unit but it doesn't last forever. None of the manuals last forever though, its just that the ZF5 and the NV4500 have the highest rate of failure due to their weaker design compared to the big 6s that came out later.

when i did my front cover i ran a light coat of right stuff on both sides of the gasket and let it setup with bolts in without the front cover on the timing case. KDP done also of course and since I have the head off it wasnt a big deal to pull the cam.

@@DentsideDepot I am doing a Cummins swap on a 2001 f350 also converting to a 4x4. I would love to run my DODGE running gear NV 5600. I like the trans and the adapter plate to the ZF6 is $900 which I don’t wanna spend. The problem is the 4 x 4 shifter is mounted to the side of the ZF6 and mounted to the body of my Dodge so I would need to make a bracket to mount it to the 5600 not too big of a deal just looking for other options I would like the interior to appear as stock as possible. Im doing an F-550 4X4 Superduty axle swap on my 1975 F-350. My truck currently has a 390 / T-18 with 3:73 gears in the Dana 70. But my Superduty axles have 4:88 gears. Would the NV manual transmission be a good idea to get my cruise RPM down?
@DentsideDepot
@DentsideDepot Месяц назад
Man thats a good question and Im not totally sure what you should do here. I have no experience with anything with 488 gears so I dont want to steer you in the wrong direction. My would personally prefer to find super duty axles with 373 or 410s rather than go down the route of 488s. Thats like NASCAR stuff right there lol! Good luck with your build sounds like it will be really cool.

@DentsideDepot
@DentsideDepot Месяц назад
I clearly said all of this is subject to ones own budget, opinion, and application. Everything I said is true, if you disagree thats fine. The ZF5 was never designed to hold up to a 12v cummins and an NP205 should be independently mounted as a best practice. The ZF6 has a monster case and requires a body lift or heavy tunnel mods. Any transmission can work if you want it to and how a transmission shifts is a matter of opinion. If you dont like my content, then just find another channel to watch.
