Totally agree! I’ve got a 5 foot 1 wt JP Ross fly rod for throwing dry flies at native brookies in PA, on some streams as small as 5 feet across. Nothing better .

My go to is an Orvis 1 wt. Most accurate rod I've ever casted. I have photos of a 26 1/2-inch brown that I landed on that rod.

I have a 7'2" 4w C. BARCLAY fiberglass rod with a Ross Colorado Click and Pawl reel. Cannot remember the line he put on for me but definitely a fun, delicate presentation rod. Thanks for the info Ben!

Spot on advice there Ben👍🏻My favourite set-up is my Scott G Series 7’ 7” 2wt, Ross Colorado (in black) and a DT Rio light line. As you know, it’s surprising what you can land on a 2wt, so I hope this video encourages more people to go light.

Great video. Love those ul rods. I got a 6 ft 1 wt for very small streams. Of course this isn't a very versatile tool and not great with bigger flies and on windy days, but for that tiny stream with small fish it is super fun. I also got a 7.5 3wt which is more allround style and casts longer and with bigger flies better

@@Tridentflyfishing Btw for some small streams a longer rod can be better than a classic short 3 or 4 weight. For overgrown streams a short rod like a 6 or 7 ft is better but if a small stream has more like high grass and low bushes instead of overhanging trees than a longer rod can be better especially if you fish like high sticking style

My best ever 7 1/2 lb rainbow came on a click/pawl reel and the lack of drag was never an issue. I'm thinking that a drag just adds unnecessary weight and complexity for the fishing that I do. My next trout or bass reel probably won't have a drag.

What do you think about a 1wt 6 ft rod? Is it going to be good?

I had a rod purpose build for small streams…7’6”, moderate action 3wt, colored to camouflage against the foliage in my area (for whatever difference that makes). I just keep it in my car at all times…it takes up no space and it’s ready to go whenever. I also use my 9” 3wt NRX sometimes, too…if there’s less brush around, it helps me keep my distance.

I have a super old 6ft. 3wt. Eagle Claw rod that was given to me about 15 years ago and i never used it. After watching this I'm going to pull it out and give it a try. The smallest reel i have is an old Battenkill 2 do you think that reel will match up with the rod? Thanks for the video.

Use electrical tape to attach a reel to a 4-foot-'practice rod.' It is hard to thread an actual fly rod thru over-grown brush. Tenkara or 6-piece for hiking / pack. Don't hike to the next hole if your balance is all compromised by carrying your rod - trails don't typically get you into any kind of ideal casting position. Plus, if the hikers on the trail don't see your rod tube, then they don't stop to ask if "There are any fish down in there?' - it happens quite a bit. If you are serious about small stream fishing, then forget wading for most of the year. Hiking is all about carrying essentials. Folks leave the fly shop equipped as if they are settlers headed for the Oregon Trail. For example, I need to carry about five to eight pounds of water, during a normal full-day adventure in the summer. Use the wading staff for the trail.

Why fly rods are so costly ? I think this sports only belong to rich people.

There are two main factors. Usually a lot more effort goes into designing a fly rod. A fly rod requires more refinement due to the type of casting. Also, new lighter and stronger models are created every few years so that design process occurs more frequently. Usually when a rod company creates a new model, they have to come up with at least 3wt - 12wt models. A spinning or bait casting rod lineup usually has half as many models. The second factor of the higher design cost of fly rods is the number of rods manufactured. Conventional rods are made and sold more than 10:1 to fly rods. The design, retooling/reset up of machines, etc cost is divided into a much bigger number for conventional rods as opposed to fly rods. Although, these are true, there is still a small amount of people that are willing to pay for the latest and greatest technology even with a $1000 price tag of a fly rod. So if the market bears it, the companies will certainly sell them for that. However, the quality of the “low end” fly rods has improved greatly there Lamaist aren’t any bad ones out there.
@GLOCKCOPG23
@GLOCKCOPG23 17 дней назад
The true answer is because fly fishing doesn’t have a huge following like other more conventional methods therefore companies charge more due to selling less. You are also paying up front for ridiculous warranties and these companies fully expect them to be cashed in. So don’t feel bad about holding their feet to the fire on warranty claims….You already paid for it. In reality you are paying for 2-3 rod replacements up front. Also, “Blank technology” is very exaggerated. There is just as much refinement and “tech” in modern baitcast and spinning graphite rods but a-lot more are sold therefore they cost significantly less. A $850 Scott does not have a significantly more advanced blank than a $225 baitcast rod. It comes down to the lower numbers being sold and them expecting warranty claims.

I have to disagree with these recommendations. An 8ft 4 or 5wt is as low as you want to go. On small streams you want a line a rod that can handle small dry flies as well as an occasional size 10 or 12 wooly bugger. Also, you never know when you're going to hook a 15 plus fish in a small stream and anything less than a 4wt just makes landing the fish too difficult and leads to a hurt animal. 8ft 4 or 5wt is the perfect small stream outfit. There are plenty of them to choose from too.
@Tridentflyfishing
@Tridentflyfishing 2 года назад
It depends on where you are fishing. A 4 or 5wt is too much rod for NE wild brook trout creeks.

That would be awful for fishing western NC creeks. A big fish is 8 inches and the creeks are often 10 ft across or less.
