How to Choose The BEST Spey Reel 

I´m a Hardy guy! When it comes to (Trout-) Spey fishing I lean for some odd reasons to those old school reels with their click check systems. So much fun!

I fish on the trout end of the spey spectrum and find the Hardy Perfect Taupo to be ideal. With a 330 grn skagit (7.5' - 10' tips), a spool of 35 lb Lazar and 150 yards of backing it's, well...perfect! They are pricy however a lot of my trout spey fishing is done in freezing temps and some reels with drag get "sticky" if that makes sense, which then makes the drag unpredictable (meaning too much!). And on lighter tippet that means lost fish. If you can afford it I would go old school clicker and go heavy. Just my experience.

If you’re using a single hand reel that’s narrow you can size up further than 3. I use my 7/8 Sage Spectrum on my 3 weight trout spey. Most modern reels are so light that bigger is better. Using a 9/10 Sage Domain on my 7 weight steelhead rod and it’s almost too light.

I just purchased the Asquith Spey #8 I live in BC CAN fishing. I bought it for steelhead and Salmon. What reel brands and size would you pair this rod with ?
