How to Clean an Epson Inkjet Printer Print-Head

When an Epson printer prints the “Nozzle Check" with missing lines, with white lines, with banding or lines across the photo or text. probably you have some clogged nozzles in the print head.
This happen when you don’t print often enough, allowing ink to dry inside the print heads but it may happen even without a reason.
If head cleanings with the Epson cleaning utility doesn’t work, try the method described in this video.
If nothing work Epsons have a very robust power cord, anchored securely in the printer.
Take hold of the plug end, swing the printer around by the cord, and when you are satisfied with the speed of the swing, release the cord.

Thanks for these instructions. I followed the first procedure and successfully cleaned the print head. I did a nozzle check print, then had to do 3 head cleanings (nozzle checks between each) before i got a good print nozzle check. Thank you. My husband was ready to do the 3rd swing process.

Thank you for the tips! My Photo 700 (from 2000?) lately started to loose colours. Black is still fine. I will try both methods, the hose from a bicycle valve looks a good fit to the ink entries.

Colour is back now :-) Not perfect, a margenta line is appearing every now and then. But other then this it was a quite usable printout. Will try again after some time.

Got c88 at goodwill for $5. Can hear ink sloshing around in the cartridges. Gonna try these methods... very good to know about using amonia for the pigment inks. Have tried the syringe method on other printer but forgot about it... I think it was damaged using too much pressure.

Same issue with the print heads in 2019. I honestly believe this isn't a design flaw, but instead Epson printers are built so the print heads will clog if you aren't printing at least weekly or you don't replace the cartridges (with Epson ink cartridges) as soon as the low ink warning appears. (Note that you can still do a fair amount of text-only printing after the low ink warning.) So either you have to purchase ink sooner than actually needed or (due to the relatively inexpensive home printers) purchase a new printer (that'll probably have the same problem in a year or two.) What is it called in the auto world? Planned obsolescence.

Oh dear! I'm going crazy with my Epson CX5500. I am using it after a year. I installed everything and it said there's no black ink so I've got one. Yesterday, I placed in the new black ink. The printer detected it's full. But when I printed out, a rust brown-yellowish dirt appeared on the paper. So I made my conclusion that it was clogged. I followed your tutorial on how to clean by using a wet cloth. Now, after cleaning, it's not detecting the black ink. I switched it off and back on, it detects the new black ink is low, asking me to purchase a new one, what the heck? Then it's detecting the cyan is low whereas yesterday it was about half to quarter. PLEASE, help. I'm begging. I don't want to waste the money I've just spent on the new black ink.

+LaaLa BA When you switch off and on the printer, the printer starts a cleaning cycle using the ink of the cartridge, so may be if you switch on and off too much time, the ink now is low. however, epson ink cartridges are a nightmare

+viandant5 Yes, I regret so much buying the ink. I'm adamant as ever. I thought miracles would work. I still hope it does. I recently tried cleaning the chips, and now the cyan and black is not recognized. I didn't on and off too many times, just a few. I even waited after a few hours to on back. But still the same. Spent my whole day on this.

My Epson C88+ suddenly started printing gridlines. No, it's not banding. I know what banding is but this looks just like when you print the grid lines in an Excel file only I'm not printing an excel file. The lines will be vertical or horizontal depending on the orientation of the thing being printed and they will be either very close together medium or far apart depending on if I choose text only, image and text, and uncheck "high speed". It has worked fine for years and then suddenly starting doing this. Any ideas?

@@viandant5 It is and it's even on the test page. I wish I could send you pictures. It's like it is printing these grids on purpose as a part of what is being printed. It's not faint or broken lines like banding, but strong, definitive horizontal or vertical lines depending on the orientation of what is being printed. Only black, no colored lines.

Rather than using the syringe directly on the ink ports, I push about 50 mm of aquarium tubing over each port. I then inject each tube with cleaning solution up to near the top, with a paper towel under the printhead. I let the cleaning solution soften the clog for a bit before pushing an empty syringe on each tube and gently push and pull. You can see how clear they are by the level of fluid in the tubes.

In a parallel video you said Epson printer did have a print head and did not get the ink directly from their cartridges. However at the end of this video you state that method 2 works with these printers and then you state that Epson inkjet printers don't use a print head but print directly from the their ink cartridges? Is the devil in the detail? Could it be that some Epson inkjet printers use a print head and others do not?
