How to Climb SRT with a Petzl Grigri & Ascender. Learning to climb for Geocaching or for fun!! Step by step look at how to get set up and get yourself off the floor using a Grigri and hand ascender in SRT set up.
I use exactly the same system for leisure tree climbing. I usually add a blocker above the grigri but not all the time of the ascent. And I usually don't hold the rope when I'm catched by the grigri. It never failed until now hopefully. The Petzl I'D and RIG are meant to be used this way, without holding rope when the system is loaded. Grigri is smaller but uses the same came system.
You could attach a Third hand prusik to the brake line before you detach the pulley, the lanyard from your harness to the ascender needs to be stronger just in case the Grigri slips. your ascent was good though, i put my foot loop onto the brake line with a progress capture, it's no effort at all then to ascend this way.
Your method works if you reach the top branch. If you need to get down prior to that, you need to remove slack to be able to take off the petzl ascender. Your system will limit this slack removal so you're stuck
Hi Robbie, I use the method of throwing a line over the branch, drop to the floor, attach the rope and pull up and over. Once I am finished I just the pull the rope back over the branch. So essentially it isn't tied up in the air, just looped over...
@@3meadventures756 so if I wanted to have a carabiner clipped over the line at the top I could just attache a throw line to it and once I’m down I can pull it down then un clip it?
@@robbiewilson7980 I am not too sure what you are trying achieve here so am probably not in the best position to advise buddy. I only climb for Geocaching purchases and don't do anything to technical or tricky. There must be a video on here of the system you desire...? I will take a look later and see if I can find something!
@@robbiewilson7980 another really useful knot I have been using with this setup is from a guy here on RU-vid. It’s called the “JRB hitch”. It’s a very good retrievable knot. You would have to ascend first then tie it though.
@@robbiewilson7980 Thats what i do, seems to work fine. Just tie a figure 8 on the bight and clip that to the main line with a biner and tie your tagline to the biner before u pull it up. Theres some crossloading of the carabiner doing it this way but pretty minimal
If you are holding onto the ascender or connected in then you should be fine. When rappelling back down ALWAYS have a hand on the break end of the rope pulling down on it below the grigri. Edit: I honestly prefer to just switch to a rescue 8 belay device with prusik for descent because I trust it more.
