This is part 16 in a series of videos where I show you how to harvest your own annual and perennial flower seeds. I love Coleus because of its pretty foliage, that it can be grown in the sun or shade, that that it's very easy to propagate from seed or from cuttings. Its botanical name is Plectranthus scutellarioides. This winter, I will show you how I plant these seeds indoors under my grow lights. Collecting flower seeds and propagating plants is easy and fun!

Your videos get to the purpose of it quickly. Much better than many that talk about anything and everything for 3-5 minutes before giving the desired info.

I'm glad to have found you! I have two very beautiful colors that have burst into seed. Since you recommend to wait until the seed stalks are brown, that is what I will do.

Hi Claire. I'm so thankful you found my channel, too! Thank you for watching my videos! 🥰 If you are able to shake some of the seeds in your hand and if the seeds are brown or black in color, you should be able to start collecting them. I just wouldn't do it if the flowers on the stalk are still purple. Happy seed collecting, friend! Oh, and be sure to let the seeds full dry out before storing them. 🌸

A dime bag! I love it lol. But great video! My red and green coleus just sprouted the seed stalk over the last handful of days. I usually just take cuttings from the mother plant but I've been learning how to grow plants from seeds. The mother plant is 3 years old I do a bug pruning and defoliation in early fall, then I put her in my indoor grow tent until last frost. I'm that time she is healthy and a decent size to go back out side.

I'm so glad you'll be trying to collect some coleus seeds. Hopefully you'll be able to grow many plants from seed. I have heard certain plants like coleus do great as houseplants over the winter. My only concern would be bringing any insects in. I'm sure if plants are cleaned and inspected thoroughly, you can avoid that problem. At least you now have a few options for coleus. 😊🌸

Hi thanks for this video as i have currently 2 coleus plants flowering on my window stil and was wondering how to go about salvaging the seeds for next summer. Its the first time ive had coleus that have gone into flower and they are quite a spectacular plant all round. Not a whole lot of very colourful plants here in the emerald isle but coleus are one of my favourites. Thanks again and blessings from Ireland.

Hi there! Thank you for your comment. I love coleus for it's nice pop of color, especially in a shady location. I hope you're able to collect seeds from your plant. Some coleus are bred to be sterile and do not create any seeds, so I wanted to mention that in case you don't see any. But fingers crossed for you, friend! 🤞😊

I may try to collect some of my Coleus seeds this year. I have a few pretty ones I'd love to have next year. I never have before because they are so small! Glad your video was in my suggestions this morning. I find gardeners from so many states, but not usually my home state of NH!

Hi Jennifer! The Granite State rocks! 🥰 I'm so glad that you found my channel, too! Definitely give growing Coleus from seeds that you collected a try! It's so satisfying. 🌸

I’m from NH as well and just found your channel when I googled “harvesting seeds”. I’ll have to check my coleus. However, I didn’t grow these from seed … pretty sure they were Proven Winners. I wonder if you can harvest seeds from a Proven Winners plant? Have you ever tried? Btw … great idea to put them through a strainer! I’m going to try that with my teeny tiny snapdragon seeds! 😉

Hi Martha. I'm so glad that you found my channel! I am not sure if Proven Winner coleus plants produce seed. It's my understanding that many of their plants are bred to be sterile and not produce seeds (but I could be wrong about that). You could always take cuttings, root the plants in water, and overwinter them indoors as a houseplant. The big thing is to only do that for your own landscaping and for not selling as PW plants are patented. I hope that information is helpful. 🌻

@@budgetgardeningvita i was wondering the same about them being sterile. The fancy ones I got this year were proven winners. I guess its worth a try. And yes, only for our own personal garden.
@marthamcauliffe
@marthamcauliffe 11 месяцев назад
@@budgetgardeningvita absolutely! I have to believe they probably produce sterile because if not, people could just harvest and grow from seed the next year. I have been a home gardener for 40 years but just started growing from seed 2 years ago and now I am completely hooked! Thanks for the quick response! 😄

Hello, I really enjoyed this video and plan to view the others. I love Coleus plants and keep them potted since I live in a Condo. I do have a large outdoor patio where I keep them .. Besides the occasional mistake I make managing my plants my enemy is the Looper Caterpillar. I have used various sprays including Neem oil but can't seem to rid of them. I decided to seed new plants indoors with 100% success and watched them germinate to seedlings now moving them to larger quarters. i am going to keep them indoors for now. I see that your garden is thriving with Coleus, how are you protecting your plants? Any comments are appreciated.

Hi there! Thanks so much for your comment. I'm sorry to hear that Looper Caterpillars have attacked your Coleus plants in the past. That's awful. Fortunately I do not have seem to have an issue with these particular caterpillars attacking my Coleus. But if I did, I'd be doing the same thing as you, which is just starting the Coleus plants from seed each year. I find that Coleus is very easy to start from seed, and if you are not too picky about the plant looking the same each year, collecting your own seed is the most economical way to do this. Best of luck, friend! 😊💐

I have a Coleus plant that is currently flowering right now, when do I collect the seeds, the flowers are still purple/white yours looked very dry? not sure when I should cut them off and collect the seeds as you did
@budgetgardeningvita
@budgetgardeningvita 2 месяца назад
Hi there. Great question! You want to wait until the flower goes from purple/white to brown. It will happen naturally over time. It usually starts (I believe) from the bottom and makes its way up in terms of drying out / going to seed. So just give your plant time. Mine are the same as yours. Good luck, friend! 😊🌸

Hi I am just wondering what type of strainer to purchase for this as ive been collecting seeds for years now but always had trouble with the size I had.
@budgetgardeningvita
@budgetgardeningvita 8 месяцев назад
I just use metal kitchen strainers. My experience is this works for small seeds but not for bigger seeds. On Amazon, there appears to be sets that you can buy that include a few different mesh sizes. I hope that helps. ❤️

Hi there. I buy my bags from Amazon. The dimensions of the bags is 2 inches x 3 inches (or 5 cm x 7.5 cm). 😊
