The Audio Interface You Need 00:10
Infographic 00:31
The MIDI Cable You Need 00:51
How to Set It Up 01:08
Demo 02:32
Important Points to Mention 02:54
As I said in the video, connecting an old electric piano, electric keyboard, or MIDI controller to your DAW (whether on PC or Mobile) is very straightforward.
You just need two things:
1) An Audio Interface (with MIDI IN/OUT ports)
2) A MIDI Cable
In the video, I'm using a PreSonus AudioBox USB96 and just a standard MIDI cable, but I think a better move would be to get a Scarlett 4i4 with the MIDI ports on the back. If I understand correctly, the regular Scarlett Solos and 2i2's do not come with MIDI ports. I know my 2i2 doesn't.
Scarlett 4i4 = amzn.to/3bwUgwB
MIDI Cable = amzn.to/3P76FF8
(I'm an amazon affiliate, by the way, so I get a small commission)
Studio Live Today has a video where he shows how to do it with a USB to MIDI cable, but as I was saying, I chose to go about it in a different way.
• How to connect older M...
If you want to connect to a mobile device, it's really the same thing, except I would recommend getting the USB/Camera Adapter from Apple if you're using an iPhone/iPad.
Also, older models may need an external power source to power the audio interface so you could connect a power bank or a block charger to the other side of the USB/Camera adapter.

This is SUPER helpful. I’ve been searching high and low for this answer. I have a pretty basic keyboard (post-1982) that has a MIDI OUT port on the back. I have an old M-audio interface lying around which i discovered today has MIDI inputs in the back. All I need is the MIDI cable and hopefully I’ll be good to go. 😊🎹

I appreciate that. You can get a standard MIDI cable on Amazon for very cheap. The Monoprice ones are solid. I would recommend getting a long one and not a short one because it's better to be too long than too short. I'm still using my late 90s-era Yamaha keyboard as my main MIDI device. Works great.

Thank you so much! Just bought an old Yamaha PSR-E303 so I could learn piano. It has MIDI In/Out, so, following what you said, standard MIDI cable plugged it in to my interface (Scarlet 2i4) and opened up the DAW (Ableton Live) and it worked! No latency, it's perfect.

Glad it helped. It's amazing how old keyboards can be used in this way. It almost seems like a miracle considering most tech gets outdated fast.

Sorry. I'm new to this. So that means you can actually play sounds from your keyboard in your DAW? (Like really sounds that are built in the keyboard, not using some vsts)
@ranradd
@ranradd 11 дней назад
@@user-tv4iz3xs4z Midi data basically just turns notes on and off, and a few other parameters, like key pressure. So all the other piano, or synth sounds would be generated by your DAW or vst synth. My old Yamaha electric piano comes with a lot of built in sounds, but these are not transferred into my computer with Midi. The plus is that I have a full size piano keyboard as a midi controller. Granted, it doesn't have things like pitchbend, and other functions like a dedicated Midi controller.
@user-tv4iz3xs4z
@user-tv4iz3xs4z 11 дней назад
@@ranradd Okay. Thanks. But how can I actually achieve that my keyboard's sounds will be playing in my DAW (without using sounds from vsts)? Is there a way how to do it? Other then recording audio from my keyboard on a flash disk and then import audio from it to my PC.
@ranradd
@ranradd 11 дней назад
@@user-tv4iz3xs4z When using a keyboard as a Midi controller, no sound information is being transferred, no waveforms sent, just on/off/velocity (a few others). If you have an interface and midi cable try it and see what happens.

One thing you didn't mention was whether it's possible to play back midi files on the keyboard. I think it should be possible, but YMMV. If the midi file uses general midi instruments, then the keyboard should/may pick them up. However the sounds may be quite different - going both ways, depending on what's installed. From KB -> DAW with plugins in the DAW pianos can be made to sound like violins, bongos, kitchen sinks - you name it. Going the other way, with older keyboards at least, the sounds you get out will depend on what was put in for the general midi selection by the manufacturer. It's a few years since I tried this, and as you mentioned it may not work with some adapters, but I think I did test this some while back, and as I recall I had it all working.

Why is garage band recording the clanking of the keys on my keyboard? Here's my setup: Midi cable in the in, out, or thru (it doesn't make any difference which one I use) jack on the keyboard. The other end of the midi cable is USB then to a USB to lightning cable to my iPhone. The tones record fine.

Actually, and forgive me if I'm wrong about this, but I thought that you would want as "short" a MIDI cable as you can get away with, without being overly obsessive but the shorter the signal path (by cable) the better response time you'll have, not simply because it's light speed but because it's signal speed, you want as good as you can get information "response" time as you can get especially from device to interface, and if you're sharing several channels of MIDI data across that physical cable you'd want a shorter path, but it does depend on how close your audio "setup" is to your machine. Once it gets to the interface, that might be easier to arrange "cable" wise. But YMMV.
