Absolutely! this type of set-up would make a great tropical pond. I'd like to see a pond like this filled with african cichlids, how cool would that be! I've kept african cichlids in my ourdoor pond during the summer months and they thrived, they got along well with my koi too! It was alot of fun, the only trick is catching them to bring in for the winter. Thanks for the comments!

Hey, thanks for commenting and checking out the vids. I used a 45mil EPDM flexible liner in here, the other layer was just a protective underlayment that does not hold water. For the cinder blocks I use heavy duty construction adhesive to keep them in place. After that the out side of the blocks got a artificial stone facade which also keep them in place. Keep in touch!

Thanks Coralman, I do try to make everything look as natural as possible; not always easy to do since everything I do is constructed!, but I do apprreciate that you like what I did. Thank you!

In most of our construction I use what is called waterfall foam, which is a type of construction foam similar to insulating foam or triple expanding foam, except this stuff is meant for ponds and is safe for fish, inverts, and plants. It is a great way to keep rocks in place, and a great way to help create dramatic waterfalls.

Because this pond is indoors, the environment is very controlled. Our maintenance for this pond is very similar to aquarium maintenance. We change a bit of water every 4 weeks, clean the rockwork, clean the filters, and it runs great!

thank you. Yes, the pump is housed IN the skimmer and pumps the water around the exterior perimeter of the pond to the waterfalls.

Hi Pat, thanks for checking out the videos. Each situation is unique but generally the moisture produced should not bother walls too much. I am not aware of any coating or treatment that will keep the moisture out....at least nothing that will look good!!

Hey Cooper, thanks for commenting. This project was 3 days start to finish including time spent off site for the project. Yes total project cost was about 5K for complete installation, materials, equipment. Give the rockwork you are considering a rinse before going into your pond, then again when in the pond, you really don't want to much dirt going into the pond if you can avoid it.

Hello John, yes, this was done on a concrete floor. At the time of installation it was planned to be a quasi-mediacl center, however it ended up opening as a day spa (massage, facials, etc) instead. As with any install interior or exterior contamination is always a concern with any open water such as a pond, but so far its been few years since this install was done and we've had NO problems of any type. This pond is about 350 gallons. Thanks for commenting and watching.

Hey Tom, it really is a great way to keep cichlids. 2 years ago I put some african cichlids (mbuna and tropheus) in my outdoor koi pond just to see how they do. To my suprise they get along just fine with my koi, they loved the rockwork in my pond and it took very little time for them to get in the mix at feeding time. Only problem is taking them out at the end of the season before it gets cold here in the northeast. =-( Thanks for watching, you have some great vids btw. -PH

Hi cosmic, ponds are absolutely for fish keeping, it is just a nice benefit that they are ornamental as well!

Hi thanks for the comments! I agree with your thoughts, houseplants were added later to the area and it did soften the look, but there is not enough light indoors for aquatic plants. The multicolor light is at request of our customer and we aim to please our customers! Take care, and thanks you for watching the Pond Hunter vids.

Hi Arteom, there are so many contributing factors that affect algae growth that it is a topic unto itself, but yes, a pond in full sun compared to this pond with NO sun will definately generate more algae growth but not nearly the same as an outdoor pond. Any indoor ponds generally have more controlled environments so the algae production is usually a bit more in check.

Pond looks great! (although I'm not sure about the waterfall light. But then I'm not the customer) The video is very informative, and your responses to people's questions are very helpful. Unfortunately, you put all this work in and that "Magic Door" steals the show! LOL

@urbanlex Hi, I love the Red Tail cats. I once worked at the NY Aquarium for a spell and we some monster red-tailed there and they were great. Yes, you can make the pond as deep or as large as you like, just make sure that whatever floor it is being built on can hold the weight! I'm glad you liked the video and thanks for watching. If I can be of any further help please let me know!

@fushadragon Hi thanks for checking out the videos. The lights I used in this pond are submersible pond lights very similar to landscape lighting but rated for underwater use.

Hello, thanks for commenting and watching the vids. I did not install heating for ths particular project because we are keeping cold water species in the pond, and it is indoors so the temperature stays within the 70 degree range most times. However, heating a pond this size is pretty easily done with submersible or inline heating if you plan on keeping tropical species. Stingrays in a pond are a great way to keep and display them. you can see this often in public aquaria stingray displays. -PH
@thePondHunter
@thePondHunter 15 лет назад
Yes, some sort of venting system or dehumidifier would come in very handy for any type of indoor aquatic display wether you're talking pond or fountain or waterwall. Humidity should be a consideration.

@dave8594 Hey Dave, you can absolutely put screening over the skimmer intake, but try to keep it an open "weave" so water can flow freely into the skimmer, and small debris can get into the skimmer to make your maintenance a bit easier! Thanks for watching -PH

Rocks are first installed as a "dry stack" then we use fish safe construction foam to keep them in place; strong stuff easy to use. We use fish tunnels and caves built into our ponds as areas for the fish to go tohide out and feel safe. The cave can be a rock overhang or we use piping to creat them and the fish tunnel is simply a cave that the fish can swim through from one side to the other. Thanks for watching, thanks for commenting, thanks for being a subscriber!

for this project we used a cultured stone facade, but there are many ways to make the exterior surface decorative, including wood, paneling, paint, etc.

@squareenixfreak1 Hi, thanks for commenting and checking out the videos. Well, yes, it is possible but you would need some really good lighting for hen and chicks. Aquatic plants would do ok, with some GREAT indoor lighting, otherwise I'd stick to low light house plants for a location like this. This does not get much light other than artificial. The pond is now decorated with all sorts of plants along the edge, but they are all indoor tropical house plants.

Hi, thanks for watching the video. This was meant ot be a "basics" type of video. Because of time constraints imposed by RU-vid I can only get so much info into each video. Plumbing ponds and installing lighting could each use their own 10 minute video to properly explain the procedures. As far as moisture, this pond has been up and running for about 2 years now and there are no moisture problems to report and neither has there been any excess humidity, valid points though!
@thePondHunter
@thePondHunter 16 лет назад
Thank you, we chose not to add palnts to this pond because the indoor location offers no natural sunlight and live plants would not live for long, otherwise plantings are used in practically all of our outdoor installations. Thanks for watching!

@galendulac Hi thanks for checking out the videos! I did try not to show the exterior because the concrete block was plain ugly. The customer had a customized finish put onto the concrete block by a masonry artist that came in after we had finished our phase of the project, but there are many ways to cover and beautify the concrete block by using stone veneer, paneling, painting, etc. visit me on Facebook on the Pond Hunter page! thanks again.

Hi, to heat an installation like this you could definately do an inline heater and that would be the most efficient, or you could even do a submersible heater in the skimmer box.

@GiftedFormula Hi Gifted, thanks for watching and commenting on the videos! I think of most indoor ponds you would need to supplement the lighting if you plan on using aquatic plants. You could decorate with indoor house plants that would make it look nice on the exterior and those have no real special needs, generally. The grave does not really make for any more of a maintenance issue, and I have found it will help keep water clearer. Are you considering an indoor pond? thanks again, -PH

Yes, the gravel can be cleaned at the same time with our pump we use to change the water. At no point will the pond gravel need to be removed for cleaning. the filter DOES catch a great deal of the fish waste.

@garage510 Hello Garage, this pond has neither on overflow nor bottom drain. Because of its location, the owner agreed ahead of time that when water changes are necessary they will be done with a pump dropped into the pond to drain it.

Hi Einz, yes there would be concerns about moisture control but really that is for any type of indoor water feature, I don't think that a pond is necessarily any more to worry about, than other types of water features. flying pennies would certainly be the biggest concern with wads of chewing gum a close second! ;-)

@MrOldskoolgamez To prepare the water for fish I used a water conditioner to neutralize chlorine and other chemicals that may affect the fish. Yes, complete filtration on this set up and because its indoor I do water changes on this from time to time about every 8 weeks a 20% change. This type of set up is suitable for many types of fish, I think keeping African cichlids in a setup like this would be very cool!! thanks for watching and commenting, check out fullserviceaquatics
