Jordan Waddell For snacking, you definitely gotta try tempeh tempura and dip it in sambal kicap (spicy soy sauce). Southeast Asian recipe. Best snack ever 😋
Jordan Waddell thank you for the boiling tip! I have wanted to love tempeh for years and now I finally do. My four year old daughter is eating them like french fries. Again, thank you ❤️❤️❤️
I'm from Indonesia where Tempeh is made initially; if you have to boil and cook after cooked, then by the time you eat it, the Tempeh might lose a lot of healthy benefits. And the Tempeh that Trader Joe sold is not how Indonesian made it, is a bit bitter and hard because they put rice in it. If you want to buy the original Tempeh, go to Indonesian Supermarket. The Tempeh that Indonesian made is 100% from soybeans not like Trader Joe, they put a different kind of beans on it.
Since a lot of you don't know how tempe (yes it's not "tempeh") should taste, you should put in mind that originally tempe in Indonesia doesn't has bitter taste. So if your tempe has to much bitter taste it means your tempe quality is not good. You should try another brand or try to find tempe which is made in Indonesia. You will makes every indonesian confused if you say tempe has bitter taste, because it doesn't. I'm Indonesian myself, but when I moved to moscow and bought tempe at the embassy (made by some Indonesian) I found the bitter taste on my tempe! The tempe maker said its because temperature and humidity are different with Indonesia and makes the taste different too. Fortunately my favorite vendor could made it almost identical with tempe made in Indonesia because she has special room to make it.
берандал локаджая In the US at least, the tempeh you buy is relatively bitter. A lot of youtubers recommend steaming/boiling it for this reason. Im not sure why its bitter, but for our brands, that doesnt signify something being wrong, I dont think. Im not too sure, though, so dont quote me- its just that all the tempeh Ive tried have been slightly bitter at first, and I doubt theyve all been bad. I havent gotten sick, anyway
@@insertname9098 if your tempe has some bitterness, it means it was not fermented enough during the process before the producer put the starter or they put too much tempe starter in it.
Room temperature doesn't have anything to do with bitterness, It has to do with the growth of the spores. Bitterness on the other hand, has to do with the fermentation process. When the bean is not fermented enough, it creates bitterness. Or, they put too much tempe starter to boost the growth of spores during winter.
I've never baked it so that is a quick dinner idea I'll totally be using!...my go to sandwich is tempeh sliced in big slabs in a pan & once it has a little color on one side I pour on top some tamari, maple syrup, & liquid smoke & then flip it over a few times til things get caramelized & sticky...a little tomato lettuce sauerkraut dill pickle & in 10 mins or less I have a happy lunch & my apt smells amazing 💚
Ya it's like $1 a kilo in Indonesia and wrapped in a Banana leaf Also the way it's cooked and cut here in this video is super weird to me 😬 I'm Going to test the pasta sauce though. 👍
I don't know, I'm from Germany and we have special supermarkets where you can find it. But it's expensive in these stores like 3-4€ for 250g. But you can also find it in Asian Supermarktes and it's 1,80€ for 750g LOL
I am new to this. I’m a type two diabetic and my body has changed where I am not able to eat pretty much anything so I turned back to FullyRaw/plant-based food diet. I love fruits and vegetables in the morning I’ve been making my smoothies a couple strawberry one banana I put protein powder in there and my glucose level is still over 400. I do not drink soda, eat candy or fast foods. Been eating as clean as I can. This week I will be eating plant based foods, only grapefruit and healthy green juice for breakfast but plant based food will be my meals. My husband bought this large soy bean block And I have no idea how to cook it but no I do thank you so much for your time your energy for sharing your recipes I really appreciate you thank you so much I’ll let you know how it goes
Important: originally, tempe hasn't bitter taste at all. If your tempe has bitter taste, that's mean something is wrong. Probably in the making process. Try another brand or vendor.
@@yosefdemby8792 : you can make tempe on your own. Just buy tempe to make your own starter. Then you can start making your own tempe. Francius Suwono's channel is a good source of information on how to make tempe
Awesome trick!!!!! Didn't know that! I cut my thin then marinade in water, brown sugar, a little olive oil, seasonings, and liquid smoke. Then fry in pan for a great bacon substitute! I want to try the last recipe. Looks so yummy!!!!!
Add 3 cloves garlic + 3 cloves of shalot + 1tsp coriander + 3 tbs palm sugar/brown sugar + 1tbs sweet soya souce (skip if you don't like sweet) + 1 tbs soya souce into 250ml water (coconut water will be better) add the Tempe around 250gr (cut into 5*5cm) shimmer it until the water reduced You can fried it or grill it on medium low heat
I know this video was posted a while ago, but I came across it when I was looking for ways to cook tempeh and decided to give the pre-boiling a shot. It turned out so much better than my last attempt at cooking tempeh! Thanks for the tips!
Tempeh is my favourite food. Because tempeh have so much protein. It's so good for somebody to build a muscle. Because tempe is low fat, low carb. So i choose tempeh for my daily diet food...
@@ivannavalencia7668 it is pretty low in calories. Any food can be good for weight loss if you eat less calories than you burn. Look up a calorie calculator on google and type in your weight and age and stuff and it will tell you how much calories you burn in a day. Then subtract about 400-600 calories from that and eat that amount every day. Also make sure to get exercise.
She: *boil the tempe before process it Me as Indonesian: "............Ok, that's new" *sometimes i cook my tempe and tofu with teriyaki sauce too. It was soooo gooooooood
After you all learn how to cook great tempeh from this great video. Its time to learn more about tempeh. In Indonesia we have proverb "isuk dele sore tempe" (soybeans in the morning, (become) tempeh in the afternoon). This proverb is to describe inconsistencies or lies or to tell if someone can't be trusted. ;D
Hi, I used your method of boiling it in Better than bullion garlic flavor. I sliced it and put bbq sauce on it and baked it for 15 minutes at 350, I loved it!! Thanks again, great video😀
Amazing video! I have a pack in the fridge and i wasnt sure what to do with it, but now i cant wait to cook it, ive never tried it before and im excited to work with it, thanks girl!😘
No oil for me. I chop them into strips, shallow boil/steam, then marinade in whatever I’m feeling. I like frommybowl’s smokey marinade or if I’m lazy I’ll just do veggie broth, maple syrup and Dijon. Then pour the tempeh and marinade onto a non stick skillet and keep flipping until all the marinade is absorbed into it. Yum!
Well done! Straight to the point. You have a new sub. I have a vegetarian lifestyle and recently found out that tofu contains inhibitors that stop the body from absorbing protein. I recently switched to tempeh. I will definitely boil it from now on. Thanks for posting.
oh wow...just bought some tempeh for the first time because it's fermented & loaded with protein...so glad I clicked onto your video...such good info and the recipes look really yummy...looks like I'm gonna be a tempeh fan...thanks so much for the information...nice video too without crap music and someone trying to be cool....cheers...
@@jordanwaddell I did...am going to experiment with it...I guess I could also use it as a substitute for meat in tacos??? not sure how that would taste but I guess I'll find out... am also going to check out your other videos too...I love RU-vid !!! it opens up a world of learning...God Bless
This was just the video I needed. Have this same tempeh product in my fridge, but didn't know how to prepare it. I am leaning toward the 3rd option of preparation.
if you are not a fried food phobic, try to marinade tempe (slit both of the tempeh surface so the marinade juice easier to be absorbed) with crushed coriander, sugar or palm sugar, crushed garlic and salt. leave it 10 minutes or overnight and then fry it. enjoy.
This food is a staple in my country, usualy for the poor because beef is extremely expensive here, glad you like our simple food. i love to fried them like a chicken eat it while warm so crispy and delicious
One of the best benefits of tempeh is that it's fermented, so it has lots of probiotics, which are good for your gut micro biome. If you boil it (or cook it for too long in any way) you are removing that particular benefit. I have been eating tempeh sautéed for over twenty years, and it has a delicious, nutty flavor. It is fermented, so perhaps the bitterness you're describing is that similar to sauerkraut, or other fermented foods. I encourage you to try your recipes without the boiling first.
@@jordanwaddell Jordan Waddell i give you recipe to make Tempeh chip in Indonesia language(you can translate for your self): Ingredient for dough: 1 liter mineral water 2 sachet of chicken powder/chicken stock powder 1 bungkus ketumbar powder 2 lembar daun jeruk 5 butir kemiri 2 ruas kencur 5 clove of garlic ¼ kilo gram flour rice How to make the dough: Blender daun jeruk, kemiri, kencur, garlic until turn fine/smooth.Put it all in the bowl with flour rice(flour rice already in the bowl). And then add salt and ketumbar powder, and mix it all *this is the summary how to make Tempeh chip:you slice tenpeh as thin as possible, you make the dough(mixture of rice flour with finely/smoothly/blendered spices such as:,garlic, daun jeruk, kemiri, kencur) and then add salt and ketumbar powder, and you mix/stir the dough with all spices, you dip thinly sliced Tempeh into the flour rice dough and you fry it until crispy And go enjoy healthy and tasty Snack everyday!🙌
if u want to really know how to make delicious tempe u can come to indonesia, alot of variation tempe cooking, most common is -boiled it and put indonesian sauce(we call the sauce is sambal) its call tempeh pecak -fried tempeh
Tempe Mendoan. Just putting it here since it's rly delicious. Pro tip: Slice thin. Warning: Not gluten free. Also it's fried, so don't overdo it. Ingredients: - Tempeh, sliced. - bumbu halus : blend shallot, garlic, coriander, turmeric, water. - 2 tbsp flour - 2 tbsp rice flour - 1 tbsp corn starch (I guess this is a bit optional tho) - scallions, sliced. - salt and pepper sambal kecap: - sweet soy sauce - shallots - garlics - bird's eye chilli, or jalapeno If I'm not wrong, the direction was: 1. mix bumbu halus with the flours (flour, rice flour, corn starch), salt and peppers, and scallions. It should look like a batter at this point. 2. coat the tempeh with the batter 3. fry it over hot oil 4. enjoy with sambal kecap I guess you can boil it before cooking, but don't boil too long since frying also cook the tempeh, but hey at least less oil getting to your system. It'll taste a bit weird tho. Also traditionally it's kinda half-fried(?), as in it's fried for a relatively short period of time, giving it a somewhat chewy but still a bit crispy. You could skip the coriander if u want to, but it won't be as good. Another really easy recipe (not gluten free, not vegan): tempeh, marinate with water, garlic, coriander, salt, pepper. coat it with panko, then with beaten egg, and then another panko. Fry over hot oil. Enjoy with ketchup. My mom used to make this tempeh nuggets when I don't wanna eat anything lol.
Since we have been hunkered down for the coronavirus we are eating very little meat products and eating healthy foods instead. We purchased Tempeh along with a tofurkey and with this great 👍 video will boil our Tempeh for ten minutes and barbecue it.
Before trying recipe #3, I had only eaten tempeh fried in BBQ sauce. I mistakenly trusted the RU-vidrs I follow to give me good tempeh recipes lol It was disgusting. Spaghetti Bolognese inspired is the best. Thank you! It fried perfectly without oil before I added homemade pasta sauce concoction and simmered. Didn't even boil it.
Thank you very much for a very clear and useful presentation. I'll probably try the "ground tempeh" style first in a miso soup. Safe, healthy, and very happy holidays to you! 🙏😊
I wanted to try tempeh so found your video....loved the boil 1st with veggie broth 2 mins. ..then I saute it with avocado oil 4min each side....added some more broth and coconut aminos....it was delish!! Thank you
I hope this turns out good for me I made it for the first time a few days ago and it was dry and didn’t taste too good lol but I still have another pack I’m going too try and bake it
What type of noodle did you use in the 3rd recipe? Rice noodles? Did you soak them, then boil, and then add to the teriyaki sauce? Looks delish! Please post the recipe here. Thanks!
Giving it a shot...like few others on here I got some not knowing what to do w/ it & a RU-vid search brought you right up. What hooked me was the secret so trying that & then going to sauté. Thanks for the informative video, oh & going to reduce the simmering/marinade to make a sauce for the sautéed Tempeh...
Thank you. I had no idea where to start with tempeh. As you said I simmered it in vegetable stock and used in a curry. I preferred the texture to tofu. Will be following your other videos. 🏴
I am going to prepare tempeh made of beans today for the first time. I purchased a tempeh starter culture a time ago online and it sits in my fridge since than. So why not.
It was really easy, I have storaged the infused beans in a plastic container, round glas jar and a glas container in a unused, closed microwave with a jar of hot water for higher temperature. I changed the water from time to time. It needed 3 days to grow, the 4th day I transfered the tempeh wrapped in backing paper to the fridge. All containers worked well. My glas jar tempeh was great for round patties for burger buns. I used a small thin plastic bag inside of this jar for easy removing of the tempeh out of it and put the beans inside of the bag into the jar. I have used small, cheap, dried white beans (soaked over night and cooked without salt).
make sure u try tempe orek when u visit indonesia i personally like the wet kind not the dry tempe orek, its so delicious i feel bad for u guys and its so cheap omg i love tempe orek
That's a great question Matthew! From what I've read, anything heated over 115 degrees (F) will kill bacteria - but that's on the outside of the food. Internally it likely won't get to that heat. So if you're looking for a raw probiotic source, best to eat it raw or add some sauerkraut or kimchi! That being said, cooked tempeh is still full of fiber, prebiotics, protein, and other minerals!
