This video is to show you how you can quickly and easily install a new bottom rubber seal on your garage door to replace a seal that has become aged and brittle or damaged. My seal was damaged by rodents and so I had to get a new one. I thought it would be a good idea to post a video so that you could watch how it can be done instead of having to figure it out. The end of the video cut out because of storage space on my phone, but I was saying that the dishsoap mixture sprayed in the tracks was a must have. I have included links above and below to the single car garage door seal as well as the double car garage door seal that I used. They worked out well for me and get good reviews. Some of the others are either too flimsy or too stiff and make it difficult to slide it into the track. This one is just right.
Tip: Don't remove your old garage door seal until you have your new one in hand or your garage door will close with a gap left below and mice and bugs can get in.

I've seen so many videos and explanations of removing channel strips, asking the viewer to pull it out all the way through from one end to the other. It's a heck of a lot easier to separate/cut the strip at the middle of the garage door (i.e., width/depth-wise, not across the entire garage door!), then pull it out from the center (you just need to initially pinch or pry the 'T' part out of each side of the channel). This is WAY easier than trying to do the whole thing from the side, especially if there are snags or broken pieces that make it difficult to pull the entire strip through.

I just finished doing my 2-stall 16 ft. garage door. I started out using soapy water, to no avail. I then used tire shine, as another user recommended. This got me and my assistant about halfway across the door. What got us the rest of the way is using a pair of vise grips, with one jaw inside the open end of the seal and the other on the outside, and pulling the seal along the channel. With the tire shine, this was much easier than the first half of the job. I also found that gripping the seal with your hand and trying to drag it along the track just increased the friction of the seal with the track.. Have your assistant feed it in while you pull with the vise grips and use tire shine on the seal as well as the track.

Sheesh. Just finished this pain in the a$$ job. Thanks for the tips. Making the tracks slippery with the soap-water definitely helped. My challenge was that there was only about 6 inches on either side of the end of the tracks--hardly any space to maneuver the old or new gasket. So, to make it easier to get the gasket off, I just ran a box knife along both tracks to remove the bulk of the old gasket, leaving behind only two slim strips of old plastic to remove. That was waaay easier since they were now much lighter and easier to remove with such little space. Putting the new gasket on was challenging--turned into a two-man job: One to fold the gasket and guide the T-edges into the two tracks and one to pull on the length of the gasket using two pairs of pliers. All told: It took about 30 minutes for the 18-foot gasket. I got ours at Home Depot.

I bought the Menards brand called Ideal. I should have gotten the brand recommended in the video, which is MD. I did this at the end of October, about 48 degrees F. The coldness I think made the rubber a bit hard. I had a very hard time getting the rubber started in the slots. Once I got it started, then I had an even harder time pulling it through the track. I sprayed the rubber and track with silicone. Eventually, I was able to do it by having my wife straighten it out on the input end, and I yanked it from the other end, and pulled it through little by little. At the very end I needed to use vicegrips to pull it through because I didn't have the space to pull by hand any more.

Eric Blackmon Someone was going to charge you 186 dollars for a damn seal install? That company deserves no customers.
@KetoKevin

How much would you expect them to charge? It sounds pretty typical her with the cost of the seal, the trip charge and the hourly rate.

if you raise the door up higher, you can get the rear track to clear the side plate, making reassembly much easier.

Good video. Make sure to get the exact size replacement. I bought the same seal in the video but the T was too wide for my track. I found the exact size on eBay and replaced the seal in about 20 minutes.

My existing seal is still fully intact but it looks like it's vinyl, and in the cold temperature, takes a set and doesn't conform fully with the small irregularities in the ground. It just remains flat instead of returning to the U shape. Are the ones made of rubber better in this regard? Trade-off with durability vs sealing ability? I'm considering changing it for a rubber one but wanted to make sure the rubber type will be superior in sealing ability before going to the trouble.

I have an Overhead Door brand garage door with a z shaped, (possibly propietary) channel that will not allow any shelf channel or gasket to work. Very upset but it came with the Lennar built house. My only option is paying them $80 each gasket (2 8 ft doors) and few them do it.

They say those end screws are there because the rubber shrinks over time. I believe them as when I took screws out of mine, the seal shrunk almost 3 inches when I broke it all loose in the track.

I have day light showing on each corner about 6” length... if I push down with my hand it seals it good, soon as I let my hand off I can see the daylight coming thru again. Any way to fix or tweak?
@KetoKevin
@KetoKevin 6 лет назад
I would guess that your garage door is either tweaked or your slab is poured uneven. If it were me and I wanted to fix that situation I would make sure it is the slab and then either grind down the middle so the door will close flush or use leveling compound to build up the edges.
@AJCoReTV
@AJCoReTV 6 лет назад
Keto Kevin leveling up the corners sounds like good idea, but first I might try shoving some foam rope into each side of the openings of the seal.

Adrian97c, Install a 3/4" or 1" foam rope on the inside of seal. This will allow the seal to be slightly more ridged and seal completely. This trick can also be used on you car door seals. Hopefully this will help👍

I think she's referring to flotation "noodles" that are sold in most department, toy, hardware, etc, stores. They resemble hollow foam pipe insulation "noodles," but the flotation ones are fully closed down its length, whereas pipe insulation has a slit down the entire length to be easily placed over pipes. Generally speaking, it's only necessary to put a few inches of blocker in the garage strip (i.e., the inside/bottom of the 'U' shape) at each end of the garage door to keep pests out; it isn't necessary to fill the entire length of the bottom strip, which might hinder it from closing, fully. Some people use a wad of steel wool (the kind without soap) or similar, flexible, metallic, material, such as a Chore Boy, instead. Some strips even come with a rubber or similar filler to do the same thing, but, in my experience, if a rodent wants in, nothing short of a steel block - - not even concrete or brick - - is going to stop it!
@ratfinder7812
@ratfinder7812 6 лет назад
If you ad a strip of 1/4' hardware cloth in the weather strip, you will prevent rodents from doing it again

Tire Dressing or Tire Shine Works Better Then Soap and Water Just wipe The Edges of the Seal With it and Spray or Wipe Some in the Track Slides in Like Butter

Apparently the channels for the tracks come in two flavors, 1/4" and 5/16". A seal intended for a 5/16" track would not fit in a 1/4" track, and a 1/4" seal in a 5/16" track will fall out.

I was just saying the soapy water was a must to slide it in smoothly because the soap makes the rubber slicker so it didn't get caught up...but my phone got full and stopped recording. lol
@dtrrtd774

I'm going to use some tire lubricant like ru-glyde if I do this, especially if I use the rubber type of seal rather than vinyl, since rubber is probably more grippy than the vinyl seal used here.

Bought the Menard's brand, the only brand they sell. The t was too wide and I even trimmed the first inch t get it started. It wouldn't go. So I used spray silicone and it wouldn't go. So ,since I had bought the actual door at Lowe's about ten years ago I went to them and bought the only brand they had and it also wouldn't fit. I'm a big guy and I couldn't get it. Now what?

Possibly your track is a 1/4" size, and you're trying to fit the 5/16" seal into it. You want to find a seal with the 1/4" T channel.
