I am a white belt and I have been able to work this technique into my game successfully simply by watching this video. I have used it to tap two people so far, one blue belt and yesterday a purple belt! Thanks Stephan! You da man!
Was in BJJ class yesterday and got this technique locked in (I thought). Couldn't finish it. Went back and watched this video, and it turns out that I didn't have any of his arms inside my arms, lol. Sometimes obvious details are forgotten :P
This sub is also a favorite of wrestlers that prefer to be in a top mount position. It works fantastic in conjunction with wrestling and is a great example of the true power of mixed martial arts.
This is better than half the crap on youtube if im honest. Im no fighter, i dont do MMA or have any fight experience(I just watch UFC), i just started to watch these video's to just understand how submissions are pulled off and what makes them effective and I have to say this video was VERY informative, who know's maybe ill pull it off on someone if i do decide to start to do MMA.
Great choke. I am a blue belt and I'love to use this and it works on all color belts. Getting the arm trapped across the neck for me can be a bit tricky. I usually end up having to use a fair of energy to do it especially on higher belts.
Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge with your videos. As a Kung Fu stylist of 25 years, who started training in MMA in 2011, I have found your videos very helpful.
you are THE BEST. i love all your vid, i would like even more if you upload a vid per week. you explain everything so clear and with caution details. please keep it real
what a Great Tip!! I have really long skinny arms and I've struggled to make the hole small enough to sink this choke, it always goes sour. I'm looking forward to trying the tweak of holding the back of my head. Thanks always for your videos and your contributions to the BJJ community Mr Kesting. You have a lot of loyal and appreciative viewers.
1:52 is my new money finish. the opponent is up on their side, RNC grip on the head and arm, your inside knee butted up against their spine, and your outside foot is extended and planted (basically your stance is similar to if you were in top turtle position). after learning this finish, my arm triangle went from a half choke/ half neck crush, to a full on instant cough choke. i would definitely say (imo) the most important detail is keeping your opponent up on their side.
yeah, I was wondering that too. That's happened to me before as well as the other guy scooting his near leg to get half-guard and eventually getting free from the choke.
You take the palm of the hand that is trapped against your head and place it against the side of your head where the choke is being applied on. You then push with elbow against your opponents head/ head to create separation. This defense technique is typically referred to as "answering the phone" (not a joke).
The power comes from moving your body forward while squeezing your arms together. It does not so much require a lot of arm strength, since you tighten the triangle by moving forwards, as you see Kesting doing, using his feet to push forward.
Not when you're on the side. They could manage to do that while you're in the mount, but that still doesn't solve the problem of the arm wrapped around their neck. If you keep the hold on while being rolled and while being on your back, it is also often quite easy to roll them back over onto their back, since you have their arm trapped (or take their back for that matter).
I thought the same thing as I was watching. I'm remembering an escape Robson Moura demonstrated where you punch the trapped arm over your head as you roll your opponent over to counter a brabo choke. Looks like a similar angle.
Notice the frame the Stephan creates by keeping his humerus perpendicular to the mat. This means that his downward pressure is stopped by his own box frame. The result is that doing a choke his way does not work on guys stronger than yourself, or guys who are able to use basic jiu-jitsu frames to their advantage. To get these tougher opponents, you must take your elbow farther inward and eliminate your own self-defeating frame.
thanks a lot, even if your videos don't have as much views as most populars videos on youtube like songs, etc.. i think they are much more important for the ones that watch them
They can if you don't get to the side. There is no bridging if they've got side control. If they're still in the mount, theoretically you could, yes. But it will be very difficult with someone putting all the pressure on.
For bigger guys, I like being on my feet and knees as opposed to sinking my hips low. This allows me to use gravity to shove my upper body into his neck...which, for me, is much more effective than trying to squeeze my arms inward.
I usually kind of walk like a clock when I've got the grip(already got grip on my bicep n all) to tighten the choke even more, and it's very important to drive your head and push the arm of the opponent so it goes deep under his neck. Drive your hips down and chest goes forward/up direction to finish the choke.
Yeah, it's a bit odd he didn't even mention the circling around, but I suppose everyone has their preference to finish, and when he feeds his own arm deep into position on his own head, he probably doesn't need any circling.
Probably a lot easier to do if they opt to apply the choke from their knees as he was demonstrating later in the video, but very difficult to do when the attacker is flat to the mat as demonstrated in his preferred method of applying the lock. That would be a lot of weight to try and roll.
to finish this technique it's better to put your right leg ( inthis video his right leg) underneath your left and stretch it. (like a clockwise movement). More pressure and better base.
Kate Gatame is both a choke and a pin. In judo you don't need to finish the choke to win the match, simply keeping the opponents shoulders on the ground is sufficient
Do you already have a video of how to apply the armbar from 's' mount? If not then can you please consider making one sometime? I get the position a lot, but I have trouble finishing the move.
Very lethal move...if there is any one move someone should learn for self defense its this and the RNC. No permanent damage to your opponent and just a quick lesson learned.
could you make a video highlighting the common mistakes people do when trying to apply the kata gatame? I can never seem to land it and even if I do, I don't seem to have the squeezing potential..
Great video! Stephan, I was looking for a way to ask a question about your "Why abandon full mount article", but couldn't find one. When you ranked the positions in BJJ from best to worst, I did not see the "crucifix" postion mentioned. Where would this rank, or is this only relevant to MMA? Thanks for your response...
@thunderchundering THey can if your body is too high, like he showed with a leg up . if you drop your hips low enough, It becomes extremely difficult to bridge and roll.
@rohit8481 @rohit8481 what grip do you normally take to lock it in? one detail that helps no matter what, is get your head as low to the mat as possible. if it's standard grip, literally touch your head to the mat, you wouldn't believe at how much it cinches it up even tighter. Even the grip Stephan uses, notice how close his head is to the mat.
It's very tough to do, and really rare and little possible escape. I tried it training judo, and then tried it training no gi grappling, so... There are other escapes like doing a "phone" with your trapped arm, but bridging... no.
Victor cabral well the most damage he could do to you by biting is a flesh wound. you on the other hand can choke him to death :) in a mma/sport scenario biting is forbidden and in a street fight scenario you shouldn't go into such a lock on the ground anyway. way too risky that you'd get attacked by another person or the guy you're choking pulls a knife and stabs you into your side/head etc. with the other hand :)
I applied this move while rolling last night my opponent should have answered the phone but he never heard it ring lol. I also found it was slightly tighter if I slowly moved towards the head when applied anybody have any constructive advice for me to make this even tighter?
I think that it will be tougher to get a super tight choke with your proportions. What I recommend is trying to use gravity to your advantage, and dropping your body weight onto your opponents neck, similar to how Keenan Cornelius does his Cross Choke. Just like when Stefan dismounts and drops his hips to the floor, you want to drop your entire body into the choke. Make sure your shoulder is jammed under their chin and into their neck, otherwise the only reason they will tap will be because of pain/neck crank. If you can get your shoulder under the chin, gravity should take care of the rest. I also like to practice/finish this technique one-handed, using my other hand to base out. This ensures that I'm really getting the positioning correct, rather than just squeezing with my muscles to strongman my opponent into submission.
If you are still having trouble, perhaps try finishing from Knee on belly? The most frustrating situation for me is when people finish this with Knee on belly and I can't use my go-to escapes. Generally its the lighter guys who do this to me while the heavier guys dismount.
I prefer to grab my other elbow instead of the back of my head and lay completely flat in a way that my partner and I make a T-shape. That way, the noose around the neck tightens even more. Once you get there, there is almost no escaping for your partner.
you can actually reverse the guy doing the choke when he do the captain hook thing..just grab the arm, catch the foot with ur foot then bridge to the left..now ur in his guard ! stupid technique??
i am actually really good at this choke, i caught many people with it in practice so far no one escaped lol ..but like i said as he did the captain hook thing from mount thats the point u wanna do the reversal.if u miss though ur fucked..also the shoulder pressure of the capt hook kinda bothers people..but i believe the reversal is possible..
not stupid but i think better to attack from side mount..no risk of getting reversed..but if ur mount is good like i did people just got lost and didn't smell whats coming..
