From www.kevincaron.com - Artist Kevin Caron explains what annular drills are and how they are better than twist drills ....
Kevin Caron shows an annular cutter. It's hollow, has six cutting tips on its end, and has a bit of a cutting edge on its outside.
But it isn't something you'd move sideways through metal like an end mill. The annular cutter is made to go straight down and straight back up with the cutting heads on the end cutting through the metal. The exterior cutting edge is simply acting as a ream, cleaning the wall of the hole so it's square, straight, smooth and pretty.
An annular cutter comes with a shaft that goes down through the middle of the cutter. When you're cutting, the shaft is being pushed up inside the cutter, depending upon how thick a piece of metal you are cutting. Then it pushes out the plug after you've finished cutting.
One of the big advantages over a twist drill is that the annular cutter has to cut much less metal than the twist drill for the same size hole. With a twist drill, you have to cut all of the metal out, while the annular cutter just cuts the edge of the hole, releasing a plug of metal. So annular cutters are faster, cleaner and increase production.
You also don't have to drill a pilot hole or work your way up from a smaller bit to larger and larger bits like you do with a twist drill.
The downside of annular cutters is that you can't use them in a regular drill press. The drill you are using has to have that plunger to force the plug out.
Kevin Caron shows the set of annular cutters from Evolution he got to go with its EVOMAG 75 magnetic drill.
He's ready to go back to work, so you have time to check out more how-to videos at www.kevincaron.com and to subscribe to this channel.
Well, you might want to hang around for another moment to see Kevin Caron have a real brain fart ....

Hougen Rotor Cutter has annular cutters for drill presses. Max is 14" thickness and 1" hole. Use them often. I find the biggest advantage is how round the hole is. They also have that plunger that pushes the plug out. Thank god I found that before spending the bucks on a magnetic drill.

Another advantage of annular cutters is that the hole can be offset from an existing hole. If you are enlarging an existing hole and want the new hole to be slightly offset you do not have to worry about the bit wandering.

I can assure you that you can use annular cutters on a machine other than a special drill for annular cutters. I've drilled thousands of holes with them using a standard Bridgeport milling machine that was in no way set up for the ejector pin. In fact, I never used the pin. As long as things are kept cool, the slug falls free every time. And if you get one that doesn't, a light tap with a small center punch in the flute area will free the slug. The ejector pin will also allow you to drill the hole on a mark, which is harder without the pin.

If you have a mag drill that has a coolant bottle the fluid also flows around the slug ejector.
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 3 года назад
I will have to check that.
@theeatonskbunk
@theeatonskbunk 3 года назад
And the pin acts as a valve so coolant only flows when the pin is pushed up as the cutter is brought into contact. You can fill the top of the cutter/“chuck” with coolant on units that don’t have a bottle. The pin locates the hole, controls delivery of coolant, and then ejects the plug on completion.

I can't find any dimensions for the ID of any cutters. I need to know because I will slide the cutter over a stud to cut around the stud. The OD doesn't matter for current application. $259 for that Evolution CC6SET-2 annular cutter set and just HSS instead of carbide cutters.

Because this mag. drill is set up for it. And it allows me to drill on something too big or heavy to put in my drill press.

read this in another video comment "As a point of experience, you don't need to step drill with a drill bit. Yes, it will go through faster if you have a pilot hole that is as large as the center web. It can actually be a detriment to step drill because 2 flute drills are not designed for enlarging holes and do not self center well. The margins also tend to wear more when enlarging a hole because the tip is not keeping it on center, thus causing the bit to wear out faster. Try plowing that big drill in without a clearance hole, then try it with just a 3/8 clearance hole. You also don't really need a spot with larger drills, the drill is stiff enough to keep on center. Maybe I'll do a video on this principle and also share some old-school tooling, an APT insert drill."
