There are many ways to eat fermented herring on, what I teach in this video is probably the most common. Clear herring, raw onion finely chopped, hot fresh freshly boiled potatoes. Hard white bread with the world's best butter: Bredgott. I do not know why, but I took far to much onion... : -)
Then there are those it imposes strong cheese, the most common in Sweden's Västerbotten cheese, but tomatoes, sour cream, fried onion also occurs. However, there are no "normal" Swede that put a whole fermented herring in the mouth. Herring can be stored for a few years, but when it starts getting out of "elasticity", we rather throw it. Some vintages are like a fine wine, they're just better to be saved
