If you want to get more benefits from books in your life when you don’t necessarily have the extra time (or money) to spend reading, or if you just fancy seeing how I process and make sense of books I read, you can now join my private mailing list: www.getrevue.co/profile/the-pensieve I’ll share a summary, my (very honest) thoughts and main learning points from books as I read them. I’ll also add in highlights from the book, so you can hopefully benefit from it as much as possible. It’s called “The Pensieve”, after Dumbledore’s memory sharing pot. As it’s kind of a way for me to share my thoughts on books with you (and the name is inspired after my favourite book so it felt really fitting).

During high school I also read the summaries of books i disliked. I remember answering a question on a book (can’t remember the book) on an English test with a short essay. The teacher wrote under the essay: “wow you really understand the source material. Fantastic job!” Unbeknownst to my English teacher, I wrote the essay based on information I had read from the summary of the book online.

Note taking is a great way to remember stuff and it actually shows what you feel about the book. A simple summary can be enough to take the value out of the whole book.

Reading is truly a wonderful thing. You can never have every possible experience or all the knowledge in the world, but through reading you become closer to that by living all these lives and feeling all these emotions and learning all these things you might not get to do in your life. It’s amazing!

I don't know why but the first book that came to mind was "La part de l'autre" by Eric Emmanuel Schmitt. Would definitely recommend!

I recommend to you a book named " how to not fall in love with Elizabeth Folios" jijiji...how can be so beautiful, smart, so wise all at once...a delight to my mind indeed...oh when I was young my favourite past time was to read Britannica enciclopedia, which is now available online, then few years ago let's say 14 years ago I used to go down the rabbit hole reading Wikipedia etc, of course just things which interests me..till this day I never read blockbusters, which became movies...I like mainly science books, adventure, romance, chronological books so forth. Those are the books I resonate with...

I’m revisiting The Betty Edwards trilogy (Learning to draw on the right side of the Brain; Drawing On the Artist Within & Color, she has a 4th book but I have not consumed it yet) after consuming Danny Gregory’s Creative License Giving Yourself Permission to be the Artist You Truly Are & Shut Your Monkey; Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic & Julia Cameron’s Artist Way trilogy (The Artist’s Way, Walking In This World & Finding Water). There are some actionable insights and intertextual illuminations in these books. There is a fascinating point Made in Big Magic that is discussed in the Magic Lessons Podcast but serves as a life lesson for “The Signature of all things.”

Loved this video! Not that I needed any convincing as I’m also a massive nerd and avid reader :D but it was really enjoyable to hear why you love books and I related to so much of what you’re talking about! I’ve also had the thought, “I wish I could live for ever so I could read every book in the world” haha. I think you might like the book ‘Already Free’ by Bruce Tift. He’s a psychotherapist and Buddhist practitioner and draws upon both of these fields in relation to seeking freedom from suffering. I really loved this book. It helped me to think about and understand how my adverse childhood experiences effect me today, but to think about it in a less negative way, as well as how to deal with my emotions in the present. The reason I’m suggesting this is based on a few things you said you struggle with and because you have mentioned in your videos about being very emotional, and honestly I’m the most emotional person I know too so I can empathise! And also some of the things you have talked about in your newsletters made me think that you might like this book. If you feel like doing some deep introspection then this book is great for that :) It’s very short too. Have a great day! X

I'm a lot like that. Easily distracted. I like to read most when I'm doing something else, like riding an exercise bike or eating lunch. The thing that is great is that when you do get into a book it's hard to put down and you find yourself focusing.

@@elizabethfilips Yes me too ... to be honest I haven't actually just read a novel for a long long time! I used to love fantasy! I am obsessed with personal development books (and tend to find them easier to justify for obvious reasons!) but sometimes it would be nice to just enjoy a really silly read "just for the fun of it" and not needing to get anything out of it other than pleasure!!

I'm not sure if this will help anyone else, but I was well into my 30s before I gave myself "permission" to not complete a book. I would get bogged down by a book, but wouldn't allow myself to give it up. It could draw the fun out of reading quickly. When I decided that it didn't make me any less of a successful, intelligent, interesting, etc. person, I was suddenly freed to enjoy reading again.

If you'd a like a novel that's a cross between 'Moby-Dick', modernism and Nietzsche, I recommend 'Blood Meridian' by Cormac McCarthy. Or perhaps you'd like 'My Struggle' by Karl Ove Knausgaard: “All my adult life I have kept a distance from other people, it has been my way of coping, because I become so incredibly close to others in my thoughts and feelings of course, they only have to look away dismissively for a storm to break inside me.”

I have some book recommendations. I only read non-fiction books for personal growth. You may also find them beneficial, if you haven't read them before! The Compound Effect - Darren Hardy ...excellent book, all around. The Slight Edge - Jeff Olson ...if you're not growing, you're automatically going backwards. The Magic of Thinking Big - Dr David Schwartz ...excellent book of success principles & tips. How to Win Friends & Influence People - Dale Carnegie ...relationship & communication skills. Personality Plus - Florence Littauer ...how to better connect with others, given their temperaments (I'm Phlegmatic/Melancholy). Leadership & Self-Deception - The Arbinger Institute ...how to serve others by being focused on their needs, not your own. Atomic Habits - James Clear ...the best book I've ever seen on creating excellent habits that stick. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck - Mark Manson ...how to give more value to the things you do care about, & less value to the things you don't. These are my favourites, so far. I read all of these (or at least review my notes of them) every year!
