How to refill a disposable 1 pound propane Tank or Bottle. To find a Refile adapter on amazon.com or amazon.ca just search for propane refill adapter 1lb Note: It is illegal the Transport these tanks after you have filled them.
Thank you for the tip. I filled my 1 lbs tank first doing upright, but you showed to do this with upside down, and multiple attempts, which I can fill my 1 lbs canister with true 1 lbs filled with propane.
Side track menu: it opened in 1983. With the accent I knew you were from Nova Scotia, likely the Valley. I grew up in Berwick. Came across your channel looking to level my Deere deck. New subscribe.
Kudo's first guy I have seen using my way, use an Allen wrench on the main stem to release excess air. Not the Schrader valve which will not seal so great after you fiddle it. Nice post.
@@timothykappel198 Purging the propane allows the tank to cool down. Then because the tank is colder then the 20lb tank it allows more liquid to flow into the 1lb
Buy the hose kit with shut off for $20. This allows you to fill the small tank standing vertical. No need to worry about temperatures. With the tank on it’s side, it can only fill liquid to half full. Put the tank on the scale while filling. If it will not fill to two pounds. Plus the weight of the hose setup on the scale, purge the tank of air/ gas. The small tank should be lower in elevation. It should only take a couple minutes. If you want to be legal, buy the refillable tanks, that have a purge screw.
I just purchased an adapter like that. After doing research I found the seals will leak because they are not made to refill. They are weak. Soap bubble test them once in a while or get those brass screw on caps with a rubber seal to store until use. I learned to let it all out on this video. The gas that is. I used to drive a mail contractors truck years back that ran on propane. About a half hour before I reached the refill tank I had to open the doors and let the truck tank cool. It was a step van truck. We are talking about winter time here. Yeah froze my ass off. If the sending tank is colder than the receiving tank it would not fill the receiving tank. That is when the sending tank was about half or less full. One major pain in the ass to save a few cents per mile. Anyway the receiving tank needs to be cool as possible and empty as I learned here. Thanks for the video.
Yes, his problem was that he should have put his 1 lb tank in the freezer. I leave them in over night and then it will fill in 1 minute.....roughly. Pulling on that tiny valve on the side helps let out any excess air too.
If you have a pair of electronic headphones for target shooting ear protection, you can use the sound amplification feature on them to help you hear that gas flow process. You might feel a little goofy doing it, but it works 😆 .... and like several others have said, a little longer air purges will make it go much quicker. You can even wait until the gas outflow is visible near the end of the cycles. Usually requires about 3-4 cycles and less than a few minutes per bottle. I also use an Allen wrench to bleed, and never have bothered with the pre-freeze stuff.
If you put the 1 lb canister in the freezer for about an hour before you try to fill it and keep the 20 lb bottle in a warmer area it will transfer on the first try and it doesn't hurt to bleed off a little excess internal pressure.
If you freeze a partially full 1 pounder and put your 20 pounder in the sun while you're doing that you will fill it in one try. If it's completely empty and you freeze it you will get 13 Oz first try.
I put the 1-lb'ers in the freezer and fill without any bleeding. I get a reliable and safe 10-14 oz. fill in one shot which is fine for me. You don't need to fill it all the way because bleeding may cause leaks. You're probably ok doing it your way but I want a higher level of safety. I throw them away after 4-5 refills too. Cheers and be safe
I attached the bottles once filled till I hear no sound then placed little bottles in freezer for 10 minutes reattached & filled till I had no sound of running gas & they were filled full or a little over
I am sure that you don't need to wait 3 minutes between fills. I have seen it done on RU-vid with less than a minute on the tank and when the pressure is released it can be released more than you are doing. I saw a guy doing it for about 4 seconds. I guess you can get a feel for it. I purchased a stand and a filler with a shut off. It is definitely worth doing because the expense of those 1-pound tanks is ridiculous. Thanks for your video. You might try burping it a bit longer and just waiting until you can't hear the gas going in to repeat process. I have a Little Buddy heater for my blind and an Ugly Annealer that needs to use those small tanks. People should make sure they don't leak as well and maybe purchase some brass caps with seals for the tanks they fill. Thanks again for your video it is always good to see a variety of ways people DIY.
Thanks for telling the real story about refilling the 1 lb bottles. It took me 6 attempts to refill it completely to 2 lbs. it only seems to accept 2 oz per fill attempt. My only question is how much to vent between fill attempts?
It takes 5 mins to fill the tank purge it hook it up fill till it stops hissing unhook purge repeat 2 more times and it's usually right at 1 pound for me. I can fill up 5 cans to your 1
You need a piece of brass or copper to press that valve in the 1 pound cylinder, steel screwdriver and steel gas container has a potential for spark and a bang that will take your face off. A refrigeration mechanic supposed to know that.
You can reduce the pressure in the large tank by placing it in an ice bath. You can help the one pound tank receive the propane by placing it in your freezer before filling. Doing this will help to fill the cylinder more accurately. Remember that you may refill the cylinder ONLY to the 80% level. If you fill it with to much fuel the explosion hazard increases significantly if the cylinder gets too hot...like in the summer when you go camping.
I fill it the first time until I hear it stop, then use an Allen wrench to let almost all of the gas out, until the bottle freezes in my hand. Quickly reattach and it fills up completely the second time.
Steve Small engine Saloon said to put the 1 lb. tank in the Freezer for at least two hours. He filled his tank 1 minute 20 seconds. No having to take off, and relieve any pressure. .
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic Wonder why it worked for Steve? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GrqxlBhx6yY.html&ab_channel=Steve%27sSmallEngineSaloon
Don't forget to CHECK the 1 lb bottle is not leaking after refill. Cover with wet thumb the opening, if you hear a faint 'splok' sound, it may be leaking - store only outdoors. Sometimes you can gently and quickly push down the refill valve to eject some propane and seat the valve better or to remove any debris that it's blocking it. Some 20 lbs tanks also have welding spatter inside at the bottom - tilt them at 45 degrees and listen to metal particles sliding inside the tank - these particles can block the tank or bottle valve during the refill. Try finding a 20 lbs tank that doesn't have this spatter - normally it should be removed at the factory before installing the tank valve

i don't understand why there wouldn't be equilibrium between the two takes once the valve was opened. Why wouldn't the basically equalize in pressure instantly?
One of my tanks has a green rubber gasket on the cylinder the other does not. The canister without the gasket filled immediately, but the one with the green gasket will not attach correctly . Is this a factory error?
If it takes more than 30 seconds to fill your 1lb cylinder, then you are doing it wrong. If you have to vent the tank while you are doing it, then you are doing it wrong. The only problem you should have is overfilling the cylinder. In that case, you should definitely vent it off until you have only 1lb in the tank. Use a full 20lb tank to fill from and put the 1lb tanks in the freezer for an hour before you start.
Place, those green 1 pounders, in the deep freeze overnight. This, will reduce the atmospheric pressure, of the air inside it ; thereby allowing the liquid propane, to nearly fill it up, to the 0.9 pound limit, of those green pressure vessels. Keep the large 20 pounder, at normal temperature; even slightly warmer ; like leave them in the sunshine for a morning. Easier to fill 'er up....this method.
I did it exactly the way you did it but don't leave it on for 5 minutes, it takes about 2 minutes each time to hear it stop running in , then bleed air about 8 to 10 pushes then put back on 2 more times , total about 5 to 6 minutes to fill , not a half hour
You are not bleeding air, you are bleeding propane. The liquid propane boils inside the cannister to replace the vapor that was bled off, and cools the cannister. Then you can fill it some more.
@@dewayneyoung7019 let some pressure out just before you fill- takes about 1 minute with a cold bottle. Test the valves with soapy water when done for leaks.
Just filled 16 bottles, two shots per bottle, roughly 5 minutes to fill an empty bottle. I purge 5 seconds between shots. I let the 20 lb tank sit inside so it reaches room temperature and the bottles outside at just below freezing, never tried filling in summer. Do the filling outside. 20 lb tank stays upside down and disturbed as little as possible. I have not had success using the pressure relief valve method as the valve does not always seat properly once disturbed. Saved $112 plus tax. Have done this for years. Hope this helps someone, but remember none of this is recommended.

Dumb question, could you kindly explain the reason for bleeding/relieving the pressure each time? Why can't you leave it filling for 30min once rather than doing it over 5 to 6 times? Thank you!
This video is ridiculous. It only takes about 30 seconds to do and you dont need to vent the small tank when you do it. Just put the 1lb tank in the freezer for about an hour, use a full 20lb tank and be careful not to overfill it....20-30 seconds
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic I dont know why YOU do, but I never have. I've been doing this for years. The gas bareley transfers unless you cool the 1lb cylinder. Keep the 20lb tank room/garage temperature and put the 1lb in the freezer for 45 min. It only takes 30 seconds and no need to vent. You just have to be careful no to overfill them, as they fill very fast. If you are still having issues, you must have a bad tank adapter.
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic if it took 30 minutes to refil a $5 cylinder why would you bother doing it?...a $5 cylinder costing you $20 just dosent make sense, just buy another one if that was the case. But, since you can fill 6-8 of them in 20 minutes it makes sense to do.
I've bought one of those adapters in the 1980's and was NEVER able to get more than 3-4 ounces into the 1 lb cylinder. We were told to put the 1 lb cylinder in the freezer; still no luck... I see now, because I did not know to bleed it like you showed here... Thank you. If I can find the old adapter, I'll try again. It's the 'reverse' thread adapter like you showed here. And yes, I still have some of the old 20 (and 10) lb cylinders, and a couple of them still have LP gas in them... I don't know if I can get them refilled...
it cools down the little tank, assuming it has any liquid propane in it. it's easier to cool them down in the freezer, and that will remind you to use gloves :-)
The reason it says dispose of is because the materials that go into making these is lower grade & it can deadly if the vessel burst.not to mention that your putting others in harms way if it ruptured the much larger vessel.just be safe.
It doesn't work using propane tanks you get at the swap out locations due there is a safety valve that keeps liquid from coming out when upside down. It has to be the old style tanks without this valve.
Unless you have super-hearing, when you no longer hear propane going from the 20 lb tank to the 1 lb, it is still slowly filling (I've listened with a stethoscope). So if you want to keep putting in 3 oz., taking off the tank & purging it, screwing it on again & putting another 3 oz in, then go for it. Myself, with a full 20 pound tank for the 1st 5 refills I will let it fill for around 9 minutes & upon weighing it will be close to 1 pound (it doesn't need to be absolutely full). The middle 5 refills will take around 15 minutes, & the final refills will take longer as the 20 pounder will become more empty & it will take longer. So there is no need to keep taking the 1 pounder off & on until it is filled unless you enjoy doing that. I don't.
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic My trouble is that even 9 minutes at the start is too long to just wait, so I get to doing something else, thinking I'll remember. Then even after 11 minutes for the first ones the 1 lb bottle ends up weighing 2 pounds or a little more. Also when filling them outside in the cold winter weather the big tank gets cold when I'm filling a lot of the bottles and then it slows down to nothing. But I hate having to take the bottle off & on to get it filled.

@@WeekendHobbyMechanic Yes I did! I had about 2oz in all of my 12 bottles! Sorry I meant to say 3 mins! Why do you think it took you so long? I did place my propane in the freezer for about 3hrs!
if you put an empty 1 pound tank in the freezer and set the 20 pound tank out in the sun to heat it up, at least for me it fills up the 1 pounders pretty quick. maybe it will help someone stay safe
This video shows the slowest method I've seen on RU-vid. I've been this other placed the 1lb tank in the freezer, and it gets filled up within a minute. And didn't need purging. Is that accurate?
It is best to do this operation outdoors with good ventilation, not in your garage. Also, put your canisters in the freezer for one hour before filling and it will only take two fills with proper venting to get your canisters filled with one pound of propane.
@@chrispierce2942 Sorry man. I took it out. When it's a bit cooler outside it takes fewer times to fill the tank. But usually take 4 to 6 tries. Only fills 3-4 ounces at a time.
