Great video! As a food photographer one tip I could give is, let the chefs know when building the plate build it looking at a side view (camera view) most of the time chefs will build the plate to look appealing from over head
@acamilop
@acamilop 6 лет назад
Solid tip. We always have to balance that time and even sometimes commitment of the restaurant staff. The more pro chef lead places will pay very careful attention to platting for the camera. Some other places regardless of the equipment and record being made will just move on. We spent over an hour shooting four different copies of the same plate to get it perfect. Thanks for watching.

thanks for this great video! Question: how do you go about charging these? Do you offer a price based on the amount of time shooting/length of video? Or do you offer a package including various deliverables (photos, different mini-videos, social mdia strategy...). I'd love to hear your angle on this!
@acamilop
@acamilop 4 года назад
I have two methods to charge my clients. First is on monthly retainer. We shoot spots and manage campaigns for companies. I won't go into to much detail, but it is my preferred way. For most restaurant shoots I charge a flat rate that includes the video, stills, and usually some casual videos. My rate here in Colorado is $1200. That includes editing of the videos, light retouching of the photos, and music. I offer everything as a package with one price. I see way to many people try to do a line items charge for their services. Most businesses don't want to see a break down of costs because it's confusing. You never want some saying- oh editing is $400 but what would I get if I only paid $300? The only time I break down line item pricing is when working with an agency. Businesses just want a bottom line price. I do often have separate pricing if I have to pay extras or talent. Just so its clear that its not coming out of my charge. We do ask how the videos will be used and offer to setup campaigns for the videos if they are to be commercials. Most of my clients want to get a business benefit out of the videos so its usually part of an ad campaign. I charge separately for this because it includes the campaign creation and in most cases the ad inventory. Digital advertising makes this easier and cheaper since facebook/insta and youtube ads are pretty simple to run. We often have more complex campaigns that include broadcast. If the customer doesn't have a plan on how the video is going to be used and shown I generally coach the client first. The worse thing is having a cool piece that no one watches because they didn't consider an ad budget. For corporate videos and such, its generally flat rate based on a days shooting. I always include the editing in that price because as with commercials, clients want a bottom line price for everything. This strategy has worked very well for me for the past four years. Side note- I price myself so I loose 20-30% of my proposals. If you keep "winning" your proposals, it usually means your charging to little.

Camilo, thank you for filming your shoot. This great! What happens after the shoot and edit? You mentioned you were shooting 4K and 1080P, I assume you would export in 1080P. Where will it air? TV? Website? Are there special resolution requirements for a project like this that would be shown on a local TV station? Thank you
@acamilop
@acamilop 5 лет назад
The other part of our business is creating the "what happens next." We shoot our spots for local and regional marketing. Depending on the business is where it will appear. We export our spots to 1080pm and use them social campaigns. Our primary promotional avenues are Facebook, Instagram, and RU-vid. We will give the client the ad file and many of them will put it on their website and google business page. On Facebook, Instagram, and RU-vid we create ad campaigns to distribute the video. There are also numerous third party campaign managers to stream the video as an ad on the streaming services. We could hand the video off to a local station, they usually require a specific framerate and exact timing, but we rarely do since we place most of the ads ourselves. Hope that helps. I'm working on a preproduction video and will probably do a video on the actual campaign build out. I think most videographers and content creators need to have a really clear idea of how to show the clients videos to the most people . I have a restaurant that used the same facebook video ad with our spot for the past six months. They had their biggest lift in business in years and people identify the servers in the ad.

@acamilop
@acamilop 5 лет назад
I bought a cheap neweer slider on amazon. The key is to lube it regularly with silicone spray. My next slider will be a motorized slider, but for now this works fine. I think youtubers are misleading because they always buy and have the most expensive gear. I rely on my client videos to pay my bills, so I don't have a ton of money left over for gear.

Great tips. One question though - would you use LED lights with 5500K temperature to shoot during the night, when the restaurant lights are basically regular bulbs with warm temperature or would you adjust LEDs temperature to about 3200K to make things easier in post production? Thank you!
@acamilop
@acamilop 5 лет назад
I would match the restaurant lights as best as I could at 3200k. Especially at night. I would go daytime lights for shooting the food closeups though. I try to limit as much of the restaurant light as possible. I use a daylight led as my main fill light.

Ciao Camilo, which lens were you using with the GH5?thx-Dom
@acamilop
@acamilop 6 лет назад
I use three lenses mostly. For most shots of people I'll shoot with the 25mm panasonic prime. For food especially in the kitchen I use the 20mm pancake lens. Keeps camera small so I can get in very close. I also shoot wide shots with the panasonic 14mm. I have a bunch of other lenses but these are the ones I use the most. If you don't have a Panasonic Pancake lens run out and get one. It is by far my favorite travel and people lens.

I output most of my spots at 29.97. I shoot either 4k at 60fps or 1080pm at 60. I like shooting standups at 4k and the food I like the ability to slow down if needed. Since these spots usually end up on facebook ads or youtube ads I output at 1080/30.

@acamilop
@acamilop 2 года назад
Thanks for watching, A couple of the shots have softer focus than you would like but I'm trying to get as much as I can in a kitchen thats live. At the end of the day most of the spots are 30 seconds and under with 1.5 second shots so if you screw up slightly its not the end of the world. Since I shot this video, I know use a fullframe Canon R5 instead of the GH5 and the autofocus is a million times better. My overall point to viewers is go out and shoot.

@acamilop
@acamilop 3 года назад
We shoot in the restaurants. If it is kitchen heavy and focused usually we shoot before hours. Normally though we shoot during service. I like filming in busy high energy restaurants, it adds so much to the feel of the piece. Nothings worse then seeing an empty restaurant. The restaurants we work with usually have a slower time in the afternoon before dinner. Shoot the standups while it is quiet and then get all the b-roll when its busy. Here is a piece we shot at peak service ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NPyT_mWYDW0.html

It depends on the shot. For food I really like shooting 59.98 as much as possible. Being close to the food, even with a gimbal or slider looks best with that smoother 1/2 speed shot. For most productions its either 24p or 30p depending on the end use. We have shot a bunch of broadcast spots that we had to have at 30p. For webstuff, I use 24p. Thanks for watching.

@acamilop
@acamilop 5 лет назад
Find a cafe you really like and shoot the first one for free. Get some practice and then take that finished spot around to more restaurants. Start at $200 pre spot including editing to make it easy for your clients. If the work is good, build your client base and charge more. I charge $600 for a video with a mix of stills for a short spot.

Hey Camilo how do you strategize pricing to the likings of you and your clients and also formatting it.
@acamilop
@acamilop 6 лет назад
For commercials we have a flat rate half day and full day pricing. The flat rate includes editing of the spot. We keep it simple because we have learned that complicating the pricing confuses the customers. Generally we charge for production of the spot and separately to create the social media campaign for the spot. It works great for our business.

Hi, how much do you charge for this kind of commercials?
@acamilop
@acamilop 5 лет назад
We generally charge $600 for a half day shoot like this. That includes editing. The key for us is setting up and shooting fast. If you spend to much time on getting everything setup you essentially are loosing money. The client gets three revisions. This pricing has worked incredibly well for us and keeps us busy and our clients happy. If we can shoot three spots a quarter with our clients we are doing good.

Should have worn a lav mic, hard to hear over the ambience noise of the restaurant
@acamilop
@acamilop 6 лет назад
Totally agree. I had the owner setup with a lav mic and external recorder but the recorder didn't stay on. One of the bad thing about external recorders is you can't monitor audio. Spot did very well though, so sometimes you have to use what you got. Thanks for watching.

Just wondering why you shot "real" food and not stylized food using some fake materials. Was that decision based on what the client preferred or was it a matter of time?
@acamilop
@acamilop 3 года назад
I think for restaurants you should show the food as it arrives to the customer. We do try to make it look as delicious as possible, and it usually turns out well. I have shot styled food for stills for campaigns, and its mostly so the food "holds up" over time. Most hot plated food looks best within a few minutes of it being made.

The dude presenting or restaurant owner should wear something else. The brown Tshirt with the background and his blue jeans, just doesn't float with the beautiful scenery. But I liked your shots in the commercial. Great job!

Hi Camilo great video. I'm an Italian colleague, how much you pay for a video like that, if you can answer you will be kind. Also I make videos like these and I never know how much to make me pay. I do not know if I ask for too much or little money ....
@acamilop
@acamilop 5 лет назад
Make it easy for the client. For something quick that will take you a half day to shoot and another half day to edit I charge $400-600. With my restaurant clients I try to get them to shoot something quarterly at least. New seasonal items, specials, dinner events are moments to shoot a new spot. For some restaurants I'm on retainer , so monthly they pay me for content both stills and video. I like this because for many of the little social media spots we go in and shoot and have fun.

I’d think you guys would atleast have a boom guy or a LAV mic atleast to make an instructional video on this. The audio makes this video unusable cause I can’t even hear what he’s saying in some parts and lots of background noise

Nice video. But do restaurants really pay for these kind of shoots ? ............In my country, a restaurant with this kind of infrastructure wont spend 200$ to make a video promo/commercial with a GH5/Drone/Ronin Gimbal/Motorized Dollies/1 full day shoot/full 4k pipeline with 2K delivery/color grading/sound fx/all that. They dont want it. They want it if its FREE or at the most 40-50$. Cheap bottom feeder business mentality in India.

In the US restaurants pay for these kind of shoots. They want to show off the best they have to offer, especially because social media is so important these days.
