Before attempting this repair, try charging your iPad with a known good cable, wall adapter and wall outlet for a couple days. Your iPad may just need more time to recharge. (Especially if you have a wifi model, A1219) If that doesn’t work, this video may help you out!
*** Lithium-ion batteries such as the ones used in iPads can be dangerous, PLEASE PROCEED CAUTIOUSLY AND AT YOUR OWN RISK IF YOU ATTEMPT THIS REPAIR. There is a possibility it may catch fire, I recommend performing this repair away from any flammable materials and that you have something to extinguish fires nearby. I am not responsible for any damage that could occur to your iPad or other personal property during the repair process. ***
If you've got a first generation iPad (model A1219 or A1337) that won't power on, it's very likely the battery has dropped below the minimum voltage required to charge. This tutorial shows how to bring a first generation iPad back to life for free.
After successfully recharging the battery, charge your iPad up to 100%, unplug it and begin charging it again. Repeat until the battery remains at 100% after you unplug it and start charging it again.
I recommend following iFixit's guide for the opening procedure
for Wi-Fi only models (A1219):
www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPad+Wi-...
for Wi-Fi + Cellular models (A1337):
www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPad+3G+...
This recharging process may also work on other lithium-ion batteries, I have only attempted it on iPads, so please be careful.

I had a 10th gen iPad ru-vid.comUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA . Felt it getting pretty slow at times even after doing a reset. So I am using that as a tablet for my 5 year old son and got this 9th gen version. MUCH faster, a little slimmer, smaller bezels, all around a leap forward. Plus, for the price that’s about $130-$150 cheaper than a current new model this is a nice deal. I look forward to the M-series CPUs coming into iPads which will really help future proof these tablets better but these latest CPUs are pretty strong and should do better to last several years with no compromises.

Thank you! I had an old iPad 1st gen that wouldnt start that I wanted to get some old information off of. I couldn't take out the screws, so I rolled the dice and taped leads to the negative an positive just like in your video but without disconnecting any of the electronics. When I first tested the battery it was at .005 volts... dead dead... I hooked it up for 10 minutes and it brought the battery to 3.6 volts... I then disconnected the taped wires, reconnected all the ribbon cables, and plugged in the proper charger... it started right up! thank you so much!!!

Thanks, invaluable info that brought back my 1st Gen iPad today (if only it were possible to run apps on it in 2022). One comment is that connecting a 5-volt charger to a 3.7v Li-ion cell can easily destroy the battery, since they are only designed to charge up to 4.2v. It probably worked OK for you because a few hours at 1A wasn't enough to get above 4.2v, but if you had left it connected that way for much longer, it would go over-voltage (which according to my understanding would be bad). I modified the procedure a bit to use a DC power supply to charge at a maximum voltage of 4.2v and a maximum current of 600mA. After maybe 3 hours of that it was up to around 4.1v, so I put it back together and connected to a normal charger. That was enough to get the battery charge screen, it booted maybe half an hour later at something like 5%
@that_Harrison
@that_Harrison 2 года назад
Glad to hear it helped! I know the original method’s not ideal, but it was the best I could do without a DC power supply. I’ll have to look in to one eventually.

Dude YOU ROCK !!!!!! .. I followed this to the exact video instructions .. IT WORKED ! .. only thing I would ask you about which I did anyways is to cut holes on the other side of the battery pair and test that side too.. Only thing I did differently is put the LIPO charger onto it for about 30 seconds to get it up to 2+ volts.. ((yeah I used my ONYX245 LIPO charger on NIMH setting)). then connected everything back like you said and let the regular charging go for a few hours.. worked like a charm .. Thanks Man !

Hi Liam, Great video. I had the same problem with mine. I tried a tick I used with old batteries when I was a kid. This is not the right way, so you are on your own and I am not responsible for any loss or damage. I left my iPad indoors in the sun for 30mins. I then let it cool off and plugged it into a charger. It gave the battery enough charge to turn on with 1% life left. I was happy I didnt have to take it apart because I am not as gentle as you :) your video was going to be my next move.

@that_Harrison

Good question, I tried charging from those pins at first, but that didn’t work since it’s going through the same protection circuitry that’s preventing it from charging when it’s in the iPad. I needed to bypass the protection circuitry entirely for it to properly work

When I stripped my usb wire it had a pink and white wire., I confirmed which side was +ve and -ve by connecting the pink to the red on my multimeter and white to the black (ground) and confirming that I saw a +ve 5V. I attached the pink wire to the rightmost battery terminal and white to the left one and left it to charge for a while. When I attempt to test the battery charge with a multimeter, I see -0.6. Is that normal or has something gone wrong?
@that_Harrison

I'm not sure if this is what I need to do. After 2years of solid use (before I only used it sporadically) , my 1st Gen iPad mini had a hard time with the connection from the power cord. I bought a new cord, (after market was all I could find) and after a couple months I'm having a harder time charging. For a short time I could wiggle the connection a bit and carefully leave it undisturbed until charged. Now I jiggle it around for 10 minutes and get a flash of the charging indicator, then nothing. Maybe I just need to replace that 30 pin connector? I use the ipad every night and charge it back up every night usually when it's from 12-25% or so percent. So it's not from discharging too much. This is my evening TV as we no longer have any kind of TV service. My only relax time and we use it for taking pictures.
@that_Harrison
@that_Harrison 2 года назад
From what I can tell, it sounds like it could be one of two things. The easiest to check for is if there’s anything in the port preventing it from making a good connection. Check for any debris and very carefully use a small non conductive tool like a toothpick to remove any. The pins inside can be easily damaged! Most likely, the issue your iPad has is a worn out port. Unfortunately, this is not the easiest repair as it involves opening the iPad and soldering a new port in place. Apple will not do this repair, but a third party repair shop may. Oh, and a future tip for buying new lightning cables is to only get the ones with the “made for iPhone/iPad” logo on them as they’re made to Apple’s specifications to ensure they don’t cause any harm to the port. Hope this helps!

This technique may work on a 4th generation iPad, I haven’t tested it though so I’m not sure. In theory it’s possible to recharge it from a power bank too, but I haven’t tried that either. Definitely try charging the iPad from the lighting connector for a couple days before opening it in case it just needs more time to charge. Often that can make devices work again. Good luck, and be sure to closely monitor the iPad while it’s charging and charge it away from anything potentially flammable.

May need to be charged a bit longer or your battery may not be recoverable. If the battery doesn’t feel slightly soft but instead hard/crunchy it’s gone completely bad.

Hm that’s not a good sign. It sounds like there may have been a short, but I’m not sure. Id say the first step would be to remove the old battery and recycle it then get a replacement. The old one may be dangerous now unfortunately.

@@that_Harrison Thanks for still responding to comments long after uploading, and you’re probably right I should replace it because now I’m too scared to even try putting that in. The iPad shows the Apple logo when plugged in without the battery and before I tried this if I plugged the iPad in with the battery connected, it wouldn’t show anything. Do you think iFixit has any batteries and if not what one do you recommend

Hm. my friend found this iPad in a box with all the cables not connected. The display and the back were in the box. I reconnected The cable with 2 parts and the small cable, i restored it, but i found a problem. The screen wouldn't clip into the back all the way. I think this is because a lack of clips by the charger area, but it turned on. It showed the setup screen, but it didn't respond to any of my fingers, the home button didn't work, and the power button is stuck. I don't know how to fix this.
@that_Harrison
@that_Harrison 2 года назад
I recommend double checking the guide on iFixit’s website, there are a number of small connectors to keep track of. Sounds like the digitizer may be loose, try lifting the latches on the 2 piece cable’s zif connectors and reinstalling them. The home button may not be making good contact if there’s a gap in the frame, it needs to have contact with 2 spring loaded pins on the dock connector. Good luck!

You only need to connect 1 battery to power as they’re connected and will charge together. That’s a higher voltage, so your iPad may have another issue, but it shouldn’t hurt to try! Good luck and be safe!

If the iPad doesn’t show any signs of life after charging it for a few days with a 10w or higher adapter, it may need a new battery. If it does, you’ll need to open your iPad similarly to how I opened mine. It wouldn’t hurt to try recharging it the way I did in the video, but if that doesn’t work, it may need a new battery or have a completely different issue. Here’s the guide in case you do need to replace the battery: Wi-Fi model: www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPad+Wi-Fi+Battery+Replacement/2198 Wi-Fi + 3G model: www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPad+3G+Battery+Replacement/3186

Hi; How to know if the battery is charging or not ?
@that_Harrison
@that_Harrison 3 года назад
When you’re charging it from the 30 pin connector, make sure you’re using a known good wall outlet, adapter and 30 pin cable. It should show some sign of life if you let it charge for a few hours. If it doesn’t, it may be a bad charge port. When you’re charging the battery directly, you can periodically check the terminals with a multimeter to see if it’s increased in voltage

I don’t get this, you take it apart to charge the battery, doesn’t plugging in the power cord charge the battery?????
@that_Harrison
@that_Harrison 3 года назад
Normally, it can charge from just the 30 pin connector. A common thing for first gen iPad’s is the battery will discharge too much if they haven’t been charged for a while. Sometimes, if you’re lucky it can come back to life if you charge it for a few hours and I’ve heard some people have gotten boot looping ones to charge by putting them into DFU mode. None of those worked for this iPad so I knew the battery had discharged too much and had to charge it directly.
@parahumanoid
@parahumanoid 3 года назад
@@that_Harrison, I think what Charlie is getting at, is that he doesn't understand the difference between direct charging and port charging. So without knowing the precise info on iPad 1, I dare say that as of the times of iPad 1 relase and later the charging via a port is never direct, because it goes through some power charging controller that makes sure the battery is being charged using the optimal algorithm, that it's not being overcharged, that would control switching between phases (like the fast charging and slow final stage), etc. And the controller needs to recognize that there IS a battery connected, which it has a problem with if it's totally flat. All of the above is roughly speaking, an educated guess, not claiming to be true precisely pertaining to this particular case.
