How to jumpstart an iPad - (PWJ175)

Many Apple IOS products have an annoying feature... when the battery is drained below a certain limit, they won't start anymore. They will turn on, try to start and crash... repeating that cycle forever.
There are all kind of tricks in the forums but none of them worked here. So I went the brutal way of hardware surgery and jumpstarted those iPads like cars with dead batteries.

Nice video, but i waiting for the mid-roll ad, mid ad ad roll, wont be long before RU-vid puts ad's in ad's. I had a Lipo battery that a charger would not charge as the voltage was too low, so I connected a power supply with a 100uA limit and just left it. The voltage slowly came up and then the charger charged it normally and it recovered full capacity.
@PlaywithJunk
@PlaywithJunk 3 года назад
Yeah sometimes that works, but that battery is certainly not safe anymore. At the moment I can't change the monetarization settings. Something is weird, I wanted to remove the mid-roll ads, but I can't. Seems RU-vid has technical problems...

I had a similar problem with the original Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet with Android. If the battery was really empty, it would neither boot nor charge. Fortunately, this device also has a 20V charging port via the docking station. If you use that one it will charge even from an empty battery.

What I would love to see is a video where someone figures our how to either drill a hole to jump start them or even designing a template that would allow you to carefully use a drimmel tool and cut through the back to get to the battery (avoiding screen removal).

I had a couple of dead PS4 Dualshock4's (well the batteries). Registered 0v both in and out of the device. "Jump started" them by putting 3.6V directly across the terminals and waiting... slowly rose to 4V(ish) from 3Vish after a couple of hours... no problems since. Issue is that they have circuit protection on the battery and if they get to low (they had sat unused for some time at my lads) they won't charge in the dualshock and they cut all output power as well (hence 0V). Probs not a good long term solution (I believe that under volting can damage the internal structure and that force charging can make it a whole lot worse) but works for now till I can be bothered to get new batteries.
@atarihuana
@atarihuana 2 года назад
Great video. Sadly my cells are totally dead. Is there any way of running the iPad without cells, e.g. by connecting a 4V power supply directly to the contacts of the battery controller board? How would that need to be wired? Just connect both - and + together and then feed 4V into the 2 wires?
@PlaywithJunk
@PlaywithJunk 2 года назад
If your battery is dead dead, then you should diconnect it from the board or even remove it completely. Then you can try to supply the 4V to the board where the battery was connected before. It sounds like you don't have much experience in such things... maybe you better let it be? Lithium batteries can explode if handled incorrectly. ;-)

By power converter you mean a lab power supply? I can't recommend another device except a LiPo charger with proper voltage and current. LiPo batteries can get very angry when charged with the wrong tool. They easily go boom.

I suspect there's a reason why they won't charge over-dicharged Li-Poly batteries: they build up internal resistence in overcharged state. With time, the resistence grows to levels high enough to disperse charging current as heat between the battery's rolled-up foil, melting the insulator and shorting the foils together. The battery puffs up and may rupture.
@PlaywithJunk
@PlaywithJunk 3 года назад
Possible... but other manufacturers don't go that far. All devices I had so far can be charged, even with a very low battery... except Apple.
@furrball
@furrball 3 года назад
@@PlaywithJunk my sister had an iPhone 3GS, years ago, which was left to over-discharge itself by simple lack of use through several months. When she tried to recharge it, the battery puffed enough to tear the two halves of the phone apart. Fortunately, the battery didn't rupture or catch fire, but I think it could happen, and if I were the manufacturer, after seeing that, I'd in fact place active measures in the firmware to prevent my device from being recharged after dropping below 3V per cell.

I hope someday we will be able to put Linux Kernal booting on all old waste and repurpose them for something usable for the lease as an embedded computer/microcontroller. After a span of a decade from when the company killed the product, they should release the tools in the public domain so that the devices can be repurposed. It will reduce the sheer amount of e-waste we generate every year. Just a thought Cheers!!

I'd be awfully tempted to measure out the location of where that insulation you removed is and use a CNC router to drill some very small holes to the battery contacts; press in some sharp pins to make contact, jumpstart, fix holes with dot of superglue.

Thanks for sharing! I managed to work through all the steps pretty well and charged the battery to 1,5V but after reconnecting everything the display remains black. Any suggestions?
@PlaywithJunk
@PlaywithJunk 2 года назад
1.5V is way below the lowest working voltage. A Lithium battery should not be discharged below 3V. Fully charged it has a voltage of 4.2V. So you may repeat that again and if you reach 3.8V you try again. If that's not possible, your battery may be completely dead.
@eelcostoffels
@eelcostoffels 2 года назад
Thanks. Unfortunately I only have the original 5V , 2.1A charger to do this. Is that going to work?
@PlaywithJunk
@PlaywithJunk 2 года назад
@@eelcostoffels It is probably a bit dangerous because if the battery gets charged above 4.2V it might catch fire... so you have to monitor the voltage constantly while charging. I do not recommend using that charger to connect directly to the battery. Try to find a cheap laboratory power supply with adjustable voltage and current.
