Hey bud, thanks for this youtube video. Both my bathtub faucets started leaking within days of each other, oddly enough. Used your youtube video to take both apart, went to lowe's, got the parts and installed it..no more leaks and/or drips. Cartridges cost $40 a piece, but better than also paying the labor cost on top of that. Thanks again.

RP19804 is the part number for a pre-multichoice 1300/1400 series shower cartridge. These showers were made from 1995-2006 and the series number is usually printed on the chrome trim escutheon plate, just below the handle. Home Depot had them. Set a bucket or something over the tub or shower drain. Or never drop anything, ever. I tapped all around my brass ring bonnet nut and got it out using channel locks very gently and gradually. OT- Use a pipe wrench if channel locks not working on bonnet nut, they don't compress like channel locks. Tapping helps and/or WD40. My outer sleevecame off with my chrome escutcheon. :)

Just finished replacing mine today. Thanks for the step by step help. After I finally got the water shut off outside, only took me 15-20 min to replace. I had a bit of trouble with the bonnet, but a little bit of WD40 helped. My wife will definitely be happy we didn't need to call a plumber. Plus the part was free from Delta. It did take a while to receive, but it was probably because of the holiday season. Thx again.

Great tutorial helped alot but I also got stuck on step 7 removing cartridge until i used a flat head screw driver put it between the cartridge and slightly twisted it to help budge out I was able to successfully remove the cartridge moving to rest of steps and goal was accomplished. Got to have patience and be aware of not breaking part of inside wall. 👍

7 years later and still very helpful. Just a couple of notes if anyone else is looking at this, in the future. 1st you can buy both the cartridge and grommet at a plumbing supply store. I went ahead and paid the extra because it was less likely someone returned a damaged product at HD. A small strap wrench is helpful in getting the old grommet off, I'm sure the penetrating oil didn't hurt. After getting it all back together we had no flow out the shower head. Delta cust service informed me I should have ran the water with the cartridge removed to flush the system. Ours kicked up so much calcium that it actually lodged into the showerhead causing the flow blockage. I would recommend to anyone, remove your shower head to allow the sediment to pass after its back together. Very simple project with a few minor setbacks. The new showerhead works great though.

All the wonders of RU-vid and EasyHowToTube .. thank you so much for this video. It was one-click (so to speak) .. I got the right part, watch this video a couple of times and sat in front of my leaking tub/shower faucet. Replaced the cartridge - it seemed so easy, I thought I was doing something wrong. Followed the instructions to a tee, plugged in the new cartridge and voila .. no more leak. The only hard part was shutting down the main water line as it was by the water meter and submerged in water - yucks. But overall, it was a breeze. Thanks a lot ...

You can put a little bit of WD40 on it break the seize. Most important though is to make sure that you're not squeezing too tight when you try to twist it off. The brass bonnet is slightly flexible so if you squeeze too tight it will bind up. Only apply enough force to the channel lock pliers to prevent slippage as you twist it off. If the bonnet is stuck up with calcium deposits, use vinegar to dissolve some of it.

on #6 move brass bonnet. I couldn't get this off at first. if anything, do NOT try to power the thing out, you could do damage to the pipes. I took a rag soaked in a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water and soaked it for a little over an hour. Went back to it with some pliers and it came right off. The vinegar will help remove any mineral deposits holding that thing tight on there.

I just found this on another site, I'll try it Turn the water off and remove the faucet handle and trim. Unscrew the bonnet nut that is holding the Delta RP19804 faucet cartridge in place. If you have trouble removing the nut, wrap a rag soaked in white distilled vinegar around the nut and wait 20 minutes.

How do you line up the screws when reinstalling that trim ring?? Mine has a black 1/4" thick round plastic piece behind the faucet. Whats it for?. but I think the screws go in the threaded brass tabs you can see inside the wall attached to the faucet. good vid but no sound.

Since you had to remove some old caulk, shouldn't you have re-caulked the backing plate before installing? (Whoops, I saw this on the PDF file you provided). And thank you for posting this. I plan to fix mine this evening.

Tricky. I didn't have that problem. Are you able to twist he top half onto the bottom and then try to pull it all out again? Otherwise, you'll have to find a way to grip the bottom half and yank it out.

STILL DRIPPING: So I opened the faucet as instructed, replaced the cartridge and still it drips. I used the Delta 1400 Series - before 2006 type $39.99 at Home Depot. There's another one that says after 2006 for the same price but the head of the cartridge looks a bit different. Any suggestions?
@cocatfan

I had an interesting problem. Everything went well. I put the cartridge in properly with the hot side to the left. When I turned the water back on to test it, the water temp was backwards. As I turned the handle counterclockwise, instead of the water getting hotter, it got colder. I called Delta and a plumber and they both said to turn the cartridge over. It worked. So even though the hot side if the cartridge should be on the left, mine is on the right. Either a faulty cartridge or wonky plumbing. But not more leak!
