How to fix M5R2/ M5OD Transmission stuck in gear, easy fix!

Hi guys. Seems like a common issue. Hopefully this will help some of you guys. I have a 1988 f150. This should be applicable on any of these 5 speed Mazda transmissions these fords had. If you took the shifter out in gear. Or took the transmission apart to regasket it like I did, the transmission must be in neutral, which is easy enough. The sliders must be centered, which is easy enough, as you will be able to see the brass synchro on either side. The reverse and 5th gear slider tho. It towards the rear of the transmission, and it's just a steel lever sticking straight up on the rear section of the trans, but still under the same top plate. That lever has 3 shift positions. Neutral is the center position. Any questions, feel free to ask :)

Thank you so much for this video! I have a 2011 Ford Ranger stick shift anyway tried to take the stick off quicker by using a hammer to tap the setscrew then when I put it back together it was like stuck in third or fifth if it wasn’t for your video I almost would’ve had to take it to a shop or something thanks again man!!

If its not wanting to line up try jacking it up in the back and get the pressure off the back tires . Then try and get the pins to line up..good luck

I have a Mg Magnette which seems to stuck in a gear. when I start the car in neutral the car jerks forward, therefore even though my shifter says its in neutral I don't think it is. Would you be able to help me?

My lever got stuck all the way in 2nd gear. I took the shifter off and saw that one of those round spring loaded domes was pressed all the way down. I tried to fiddle with it with a screwdriver to get it loose but the dome seems to be stuck. I’d hate to drop the whole transmission just to repair, it what would you suggest on getting it unstuck?

Can you help meee my truck is stuck in gear I pulled the stick out they all line up I just did this and it worked but messed up again

That's why I worked von it in the first place the shifter went all the way down when in second gear I thought replacing the bushings and all with the kit would solve it

I'm asking if the problem happened randomly, or did you do some work to the trans, put it back together and then had this problem. If the latter, then you must have misaligned something. If the first thing, then it sounds like something broke. If the shifter goes down, as in shift into second and the shifter keeps going (like about to hit the seats) then the top of the shift fork may have broken as that is one of the only possibility I can think of that would allow all the other gears to still work. I'm not an expert by any means, just the only thing I can think of. I'd pull that top cover off and see what's going on

@@MVP11489 thanks it was like that before I took the cover off to replace the shifter rebuild kit the part of the shifter that goes into the transmission looks ok but I will take it out again and maybe go to the store and compare to another one. Mine has first third fourth and fifth gear but in second the shifter goes all the way down and won't come out of gear ?

Did you do any sort of work on the transmission that caused this issue? Or was it working fine, then started this issue on its own?

@@MVP11489 no work on it before but I just put one those shifter rebuild kits on. And when I put it in second the shifter goes way down and won't come out of second all other gears work fine. I put it back together without it being in neutral and saw a video and put it in neutral with a screw driver. I'm working on from inside the truck. BTW. I REALLY REALLY THANK YOU FOR TAKING YOUR TIME TO COMMENT BACK TO ME. GOD BLESS THANKS ALOT SIR

What your saying is im going to have to pull my transmission and take the top off to fix it mine is hung in 3rd gear and I’ve been at it for days

No. I had my top off because I was working on it, and replaced all those the gaskets and the clutch. The only way this method will fix your issue, is if you took the shifter itself off (like to replace the bushings), and put it back in, and then it was stuck in gear. Simply pull the shifter off (three bolts and the shifter stick), use a long screw driver, and shift all the forks so they all line up, and when you put the stick back in, make sure it falls into the center row, like I showed in the video, and it will be fixed. If the transmission was working fine, then all of a sudden one day it was stuck, this is not your issue

@@MVP11489 no I was pulling the stick off the top of the trans mission and I pulled the stick out of the transmission while it was in gear and now I can’t get it out of gear

@@chandlerstuart1702 oh gotcha. So yep, just gotta pull the stick back out, not the top plate, center all three shift forks like on the video, with a screw driver or something, slap the stick back in the center and you should be all good to go 👍

No you can do it from the top where the shifter goes in . Take a flat head and most of the time you can get the pieces to act right. If they act stupid jack the rear end up so your tires are off the ground and that should do it
