tip: cut a red rubber eraser in half long way (the kind you used in elementary school) and use that as a pinpoint sanding block to wrap paper around for your wet sanding. Great control, and levels nicely, all while keeping the size of the scuffed paint to a minimum. And you should really go no lower than 1500 grit for the initial sanding, as you want to limit damage to surrounding clear coat.
@TorsionTransport89
@TorsionTransport89 6 лет назад
I'm going to try a similar approach but I think I'm going to put masking tape around the chipped area so I don't sand anything I don't need to sand. Thanks for posting!
@uhlspetznaz
@uhlspetznaz 4 года назад
Sanding doesn't hurt. The clear coat protects the original paint job. Scuffing up the area around the fix isn't a bad thing.As long as you don't sand so much that you see metal in places that wasnt damaged before. As for "fixing" the scuffed areas, all that is required is to buff it.

Plus 1000 grit with no masking tape????...if anything 1500-2000 grit...I would also go with masking tape and sill use 2000 just to be on the safe side...I guess his car is kinda crappy where my car (96 Jaguar XJS Convertible) needs a bit more loving🙂

Ive found if you can carefully lay a bubble of paint into the chip , and leave it with a little bit of a round head above the painted surface( not enough to run but just a little higher than the original paint. It dries almost perfectly level if not just a little under so as you have room to add clear if you want. Saves you alot of sanding and buffing

I don’t think you needed to put the gloss on the areas away from the rock chip. Using a DA and Meguiar’s M105 and a polishing compound it would fix the dull part you see in sanding. You could also put the sandpaper on the tip of the eraser of a number 2 pencil and sand that way.
@DIYJeff
@DIYJeff 5 лет назад

Sand the edges smother before starting, apply paint but build to a top. Sand with sponge, never with fingers, you’re distributing pressure wrong that way. Don’t overdo clearcoat, it should be thick enough around the repair area even after sanding. Less is more when using brush.

You can also go to your local NAPA Auto Parts depending on the store that will provide assistance with making paint as long as you have the paint code and also the shade of the actual pain to self or the vehicle to be able to match at 100%

Antonio, thanks for the additional option. The one plus about the duplicolor pen is that the clearcoat is included with it.
@DIYJeff

@Jeff George , not sure how much NAPA charges, but I would think after you buy the clear separate it would be fairly close in price.
@DIYJeff
@DIYJeff 5 лет назад
@Jeff George my advice is be patient and don't rush it. Even if you don't finish it this weekend because of drying time, as long as you get the primer on there, there metal will be protected and you could do the paint the next weekend.
@DIYJeff
@DIYJeff 5 лет назад
@Jeff George also, don't sand as far around the chip as I did. sand the smallest area you can. You can even glue a small piece of sandpaper on the end of pencil eraser. I've done chips since the one I filmed that came out better by not sanding the surrounding area.

Not too bad for the first time. White is a paint in the ass to blend! I do these types of rock chip fills all the time in my detail shop. The most important finishing step that you missed was using a buffer. The other suggestion is when applying the paint (or clear) dry each coat with a hair dryer or heat gun. Also, when applying the clear be sure to apply the first coat and let it dry, then apply it as a glob and let it set overnight. Then wet sand then clear down even with the put around the chip. If you run into pit marks you'll have to apply another coat, let it dry and sand. Another trick of the trade is to cut pieces of sand paper with a hole punch and glue them into the unused end of an eraser and/or use a thin foam sand paper backer.

Hey man. So I got a chip/dent on my car. Should I try and pull the dent up first (with those hail dent kits), and then use that very fine bondo to fill up the chip, or should I skip pulling the dent up and just fill the whole thing with bondo and then sand it down?

What about paint chips that expose bare metal? What do you use for primer?
@DIYJeff
@DIYJeff 5 лет назад
J L, when they are small paint chips, primer is not recommended using this type of application. If you did, it would build the paint up too high. If you're talking about a larger area, then you wouldn't want to use this application. I'd suggest spraying at that point.

Good job, but I would try not to add clear coat to such a large area. Sweet project cars has some great videos on this subject and he shows how it is much easier to mix your color and clear to make a single stage paint to make the job much quicker and simpler with great results.

I suspect you are suppose to shake that paint really well before use and pre sand the inner sharpe edges of the original paint before applying the new paint. Alot of people use the small applicator tip to add paint to the cavity on a horizonal surface rather than the brush

The problem is ALL car manufacturers DO NOT apply enough paint on the automobiles anymore. They are doing it as cheaply as possible with robots now and the bottom line is they just aren't applying enough coats of paint. They should be applying at least two coats of primer, three coats of paint, and two coats of clear coat but instead it's one of each and put on thinly. Really SAD! I remember the old vehicles and they had plenty of paint of them. My mom had a 67 Ford Mustang and it NEVER had any rock chips on the hood. The nice thing is it had a chrome bumper and metal grill. NO PLASTIC parts on the front of that car!

My only question is why didn’t you wet sand the touch up paint before applying the clear coat?! You could have made it look so much better! I feel like you need to sand the paint and then the clear coat in two seperate steps

Mark D, I'm not sure if you ended up watching the whole video or not (I know it's long) but at 14:07 I talk about the need to wet sand after applying the paint and letting id dry overnight, and at 14:43 I start wet sanding before I applied the clear coat. Hope that clears up your concern.

@@DIYJeff I did a repair on my trunk with an identical pen from GM, 5 months later (including winter months) it has not resurfaced. I’m assuming there is a sort of sealer mixed in with the paint? Obviously when I did do the repair I made sure there was no rust remaining. Repeatedly took pictures with a high quality camera, zoomed into the area of interest to inspect and carried on.

Use a buffing machine works A lot better
@uhlspetznaz
@uhlspetznaz 4 года назад
I honestly found this video a bit frustrating. To start, it doesn't hurt if you remove more paint around the chipped area. In fact, it's good to be sure there isn't any rust that may be under the edge of the paint. Second, you don't need to apply the paint in light layers repeatedly. One coat that is raised above the undamaged paint surface will suffice. Once the paint is completely dry then you wet sand the area. This will knock down the raised bump of fresh paint down to the old paints level creating a flush and smooth surface. Regarding the clear coat. The only area that may need any new clear coat is the part you repaired. The milky, dull area that was sanded only needs to have some rubbing compound added and then buffed out. Before ever adding clear coat if you would use the rubbing compound first, you might not even be able to tell where the repair was...without ever adding the clear coat. Adding a new layer of clear is fine if the repair area was larger though. But even then, you would need to wet sand after the clear dried, and then buff with a rubbing compound.
@uhlspetznaz
@uhlspetznaz 4 года назад
Also, had you had a larger amount of paint added to the spot, and then sanded, you would not be able to see the old edge of the paint. It would all be blended in. I also don't k ow why you didn't bother filling in the other damaged spots around the ones you tried to fix. Fyi, there are many videos on RU-vid where professionals will walk you through the steps and explain further why you want more paint and so on. Hope you were able to get those spots fixed up.

Michael Kensington, for smaller areas you can get away with just putting on the paint, letting it dry, wet sand it, apply clear, wet sand it, buff it, and wax it. Total project time maybe only 30 minutes (with additional waiting time for coats to dry). But with larger areas there really isn't a quicker option that I know of.
