How To Fix Stripped Out Bolt Threads In Aluminum

My dad and I show you how we fix stripped out bolt threads on our Harley engine and Transmission cases. We had some very badly stripped out bolt threads on the engine and transmission cases on the 1978 shovelhead project that we are working on!! Luckily my dad has done this before so he knew exactly what to do. 😎 Using this DIY method for fixing stripped out threads is convenient if you want a specific size of slug because you can make them to your exact fitment. The steel slugs we make allow for the hole to be threaded all the way to the bottom, and they will also be stronger than the original threads were.
I swear, this is a much better solution than Helicoils!
Hope you all find this helpful! ✌️ 😘
And, anyone who want's to send me pictures of their bikes, you can email me at:
redrider.canada.bc@gmail.com
PLEASE SEND LARGE CLEAR PHOTOS!
1080p x 1080p is the MINIMUM we can work with, so please do your best at making sure your photos are large and not blurry 🙂 And send more than one if you can as well!
Only motorcycle related emails please - sorry, but I just don't have the time to engage in personal conversations.
Thank you for your understanding.
If you DON'T want your bike highlighted in a future video showing viewers bikes then make sure to mention it in your email. Other than that, expect to see your bike in one of my videos!
If you would like my PO BOX address you can find it in the description to my channel by following this link:

Great repair Angel! Your Dad is teaching you well. I think I would like to set and talk with him. One old man to another. I've made these on a lathe, but never on a drill press. I don't think enough people realize that for maximum strength you should always use a coarse thread in aluminium and fine thread in steel. While working as a machinest in a plant that made military aircraft parts, we made some components out of aluminum with steel inserts at the threads. I questioned the reason for it and was told that they were parts that are regularly disassembled for maintenance, so the inserts were a "prophylactic measure" to prevent thread damage.

Hi 👋, Red and Dad, that was a great territorial how to fix your striped out threads in your cases, and the re-instalment of better high-quality threaded inserts, you and your dad have done a great job, well worth the time and effort making slightly larger inserts, stay warm and cosy with your new fleece, merchandise, not sure how you’re doing for space in your workshop, or you might have got another area where you can store things, after buying a load more bikes, I am just in the process of ordering some bits and pieces, to build an elevator to go up and down into my attic, There is a track called Uni track from memory, It comes with a set of rollers on a steel bar that allows you to make a platform that can be pulled up and down by using electric winch, Just thought it might be some used to you, or our other friends, looking and watching online, stay safe look forward to seeing you next journey Ford with your project, and yes I am looking for a Bike,😂, Now. @RedRiderCanadaBC
@RedRiderCanadaBC 6 месяцев назад
Thanks River 😁 RU-vid just changed it so I can decide where the adds are placed and how often they show, but for this video I didn't do that. I get paid by how much the advertisements on my videos are watched and for how long. And I try to keep it moderate so that there isn’t more than 1 add every 4 to 6 minutes. RU-vid really doesn’t pay much at all for someone like me who gets a small number of views on every video haha, and they take %40 of whatever revenue is generated... Thank you for watching the adds for my sake!! 😊
@river4837
@river4837 6 месяцев назад
In that case you'll want to experiment with different placements of the ad's and thats fine, you should do that as your utube skills grow. It' was just easier to go start dinner or whatever while the ads run after the video :) But I would definitely see what works best. I'll still play them through where ever they are.@@RedRiderCanadaBC

It's a great video, it's a great job! That's why I love old motors and old machinery - there are metal reserves where you can do something. In modern engines, everything is too light and thin - an eternal struggle to reduce production costs and make everything disposable for five years. Нарезание резьбы- это моя детская слабость ❤, я нарезал резьбу абсолютно везде, даже на моих карандашах и письменных ручках была резьба, всё по нормам и стандартам метрической системы😂😬

A few things: 1: Grade 8 is a great choice! 2: In aluminum the length as 2" of thread diameter is maximum holding power, in steel 1 1/2" is max holding power. 3: Another way to start threads straight is take a flat piece of metal that fits the surface you are tapping, drill a hole in it the same diameter as the tap and push it flat against the surface you are starting the tap into. Put the tap through the hole and it will start straight as long as your drilled hole is straight. (old machinist trick). Keep up the great work!

Thank You Miss Angel! Growing up on the farm and rebuilding one tractor each winter, my uncle taught me this and until now I thought I was the only one not buying inserts. Water pump bolts on all types of vehicles break off and mess up the hole when being extracted so they get this fix also. I have always used grade 5s because I figured even with oiling the drill bits the heat decreased the temper. I will use grade 8s from now on though, Thank You very much. When my shops didn't have heaters? I put a light bulb in the bottom of paint cabinets to provide some warmth and now I do the same with my rechargeable batteries. It is getting difficult to find incandescent bulbs these days but I do not recommend using heat lamps- TOO much heat! For the barn now I am using a buddy heater near my work areas. For a hundred bucks more i bought a EcoFan then with a cutting wheel I cut a groove in it's base, just big enough for the thin bar on the buddy heaters grill to hold the fan in place. It doesn't take any time at all for the "wood stove fan" to start spinning and blowing warm air on me and my projects. Fortunately the barn is drafty so i do not worry about condensation from burning propane. Just a (cheap? ) hint to continue work well into winter. With Love and RESPECT, You both are in my prayers Hoka Hey

Nice machine work making those threaded inserts, and installing them. I've never thought of making my own, always used the Helicoil ones for thread repairs. I've seen a lot of messed up engine, and trans cases due to backyard mechanics over tightening fasteners. Cast aluminum although stable material, threads are pretty fragile, and can easily be stripped out.

I replaced a pull on my leather motorcycle jacket last year. I see you have a safety pin through your zipper pull on your black hoody sweatshirt you are wearing in this video. Zipper pulls sizes are designated by numbers. 5, 7, 9, 10 etc. My zipper is a YKK number 10 antique brass. Look the size number on the back of your pull and order a repair kit. Your new pull will usually come with a couple of the stops that are on the top of the zipper . You remove the stop (at the top ) on the pull side of the zipper. Discard and install a new stop after you slide the new zipper pull onto the zipper ( from top to bottom) and test the new pull on the zipper. I used a small needle nose pliers to remove the old and "crimp" the new pull stop on my jacket. New pulls cost a few dollars. Mine is the largest and antique brass (cost extra) so it cost me $9.00 US.

I absolutely abhor Helicoils which cause major problems later down the road. Solid sleeves are definitely THE way to go. And I too use GR8 bolts whenever I can. When installing custom sleeves, I use a jam nut on a longer bolt (or Redi-rod) as an install tool. That avoids contamination material when using a cut-off disc near the engine & alternator. A piloted end mill or even just a carbide countersink reamer works for trimming the new sleeves after installing. I was very impressed with your drill press setup, and the accuracy that you achieved. I have a lathe that I use (so I'm spoiled).

Thank you!! Yea my dad is not a fan of Helicoils either so he's been doing it this way for a while. I wish we had a lathe! Thanks for the tips too 👍

but Grade 8 bolts are specified for high strength applications and are commonly used in heavy manufacturing, such as tractor and truck fabrication for instance. The bolts are typically made of a medium carbon alloy steel that is plated in zinc for extra resilience latter means you have al+zn . two inactive metals. so you need a primer if you wanna loctite here. see my comment

@Changtent 5 месяцев назад
@@alexneudatchin2161 Anything that a GR2, or GR5 bolt can do; can also be done by a GR8. The reverse is not true. When you need a GR8, a lower grade is not acceptable. GR5 will work for most motorcycle applications. I have a preference for GR8, so purchase & stock only that grade as opposed to having duplicate GR5 stock. When I acquire GR2 bolts, they go into the garbage (or recycle metal). Plating on bolts is an option for any grade. If you prefer non-plated bolts, then purchase them that way. If you like to use a primer with your Loctite, then do so. Thank you for your comment, and stay safe out there.

@@Changtent most of them are plated and she used plated ones also. loctite involves galvanization(sort of) which will not occur between aluminum and zinc. i have comment on that here with a snippet from their papers. And wish you good luck, also.

Very impressive! Helicoils ARE usually short. I have doubled them up before. They are also quite expensive now. What you guys did requires the utmost precision, and it looks fantastic!

Great video, also Harleys run their own thread count in certain locations, if you are rebuilding something thread prep is something lots overlook that can help reduce repair, I'm doubtful the panhead has any original holes for the rocker covers, pretty thin and small in that area and lots of years of wrenching on it

This is such a cool way to fix stripped out threads! Thread inserts are only better for the reasons being, the material used in inserts is very hard also the shape of thread insert threads actually provide more surface area for the bolt. It's very cool stuff. I lobe your content been watching for over a year now!

By the way I know not everyone would have a lathe but for those of us that do would it be better on it or is there a particular reason for using the drill press? Please keep the tips coming?
