How to Fix the Spread Apart Desktop Icon Issue in Windows

If for some reason your desktop icons are spread far apart and you are unable to align them properly or even line them up at all, then you may need to apply a certain registry fix to get things looking right again. You can first try to right click the desktop and play with the View options such as align to grid and so on but if that doesn't work, this registry edit should.
Navigate to
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics
Make sure the valued for IconSpacing and IconVerticalSpacing are set to -1125 and then reboot your computer.

I've been having this issue for a while, I used to just restart windows explorer and it would fix it, but not anymore. This was a big help!

I've been going mad trying to figure out why my desktop icons are doing this spacing far apart and overlapping on top of one another. I wasn't aware that others are experiencing this as well. Thank you for this. I was contemplating on rebooting to factory as I am enrolled in the windows insider program and thought maybe that was causing issues with this.

Hello! I'm still suffering from this issue, even after following your video faithfully. Both IconSPacing & IconVerticalSpacing were -1125 before messing with them, and they still are. I even tried multiple other variables. But no luck, sadly. I'm on Windows 11. If that matters.

because microsoft. I've set my internet connection to limited, and turned all updates off, because I barely use my pc when I need it, and updates usually screw something and I can't work on it. AAAAAAAAAND it still manages to update sometimes, like this time when it fucked up my desktop icons. The solution presented in this video didn't work for me, as the reg settings were correct, but when I've rebooted, stupid windows was updating. One time it entered a reboot loop after an update, so I had to boot into safemode to uninstall the idiotic updates. Best solution is to get a mac or install a distribution of Linux that looks like windows for those that don't like the changes.
