How to fix weak hydraulic boot lid BMW E38

My hydraulic boot / trunk lid BMW E38 started to be weak.
The oil was too old (20 years old) and dirt.
I believed the system is the similar on the BMW E65/E66
Ref part BMW for the repair kit : 512 482 365 04

When the pump gets noisy, the fluid needs topping up. There is no need to remove the pump. A 5mm hex wrench cut down allows the fill screw to be removed. Filling has to be done slowly as it takes time to dribble through to the reservoir, using a short length of clear tuning. BMW fluid is wildly expensive, so locate Aeroshell 41 instead. The pump can be removed without removing the white module in the video.If the pump is removed, reposition the clip to the reservoir so the head faces towards you, so it can be tightened later if necessary.

Thank you for your helpful video 😁 My boot opened pretty normally but closed like in 25 seconds. I replaced the oil by taking off the reservoir and filling that one up (seen in another video). I didn't knew a certain bolt had to stay off for the air to escape. Now I know, thanks. Currently my boot doesn't open anymore but I feel he's trying. Closing works but kinda slow and I need to give it a little push down at first. I will try to fix it again soon

Not sure why, but I didn’t realize it was actually supposed to fully open I thought the button would just pop the trunk 😂. Oops looks like I need to fix mine ASAP

How many times do you open the boot to bleed the system? I have replaced the fluid in my pump with Aeroshell 41, the pump works but does not open the boot lid. Is this because of air in the system?

yes, to much air. I did about 10 times closing/opening and the pump started to open the boot. Make sure the level is correct and le filling bolt is not on the pump to allow to air to get out

@@MecaLogic thank you for your reply. I didn't realise that the filling bolt had to be removed to bleed the system. I thought that oil would come out under high pressure if it was removed when the pump was running.
