2:23 the "bond" you're referring to that attaches the die to the pcb substrate is known as a grid array of solder balls. It's the exact same way they attach that component to the mainboard.
It’s similar but not the same. The flip chip connection used micro balls known to typically as solder bumps and has underfill surrounding it in order to secure the die in place. The reason for this is that the die is basically a hot slab sitting on bumps that are much more delicate than BGA balls used to attach it to the motherboard, so mechanical strengthening is required. It’s been well known that when incorrect underfill is used, the flip chip connection fails (see Nvidia Bumpgate as an example).

Finally someone on RU-vid has real science to explain why the rrod/rdod failures happen. So it’s a defect that is strictly local to the gpu/apu. It has nothing to do with board or with the thermal design. While M$ and AMD kept it hush, hush, we were bolt modding, wrapping towels, baking the motherboard in ovens, cutting vent holes, and adding fan mods thinking that rrod was a thermal problem. Talk about living in the dark ages. Lmao
Exactly. You may notice also that NVIDIA had the same issues and it was probably an issue at the chip manufacturer, TSMC. MS finally admitted the cause in their Power On documentary confirming that it was inside the GPU, not on the board, and not with thermal design.
@@Josh.Davidson It's a widespread issue (well was). Affected everything fabbed at TSMC for a while, including the GPUs of fat PS3s, countless nvidia graphics cards from the late 7000 series up to the 9000s, a ton of ATI/AMD GPUs and motherboard chipsets (though they never admitted to anything being wrong, unlike nvidia. killed tons of graphics cards, PC mobos (in case of chipsets) and macs). Intel didn't have problems in that time frame because they fabbed everything in-house. And it *is* kind of related to thermals, as thermal cycling is what effectively destroys the bumps thanks to crap formulation and insufficient physical support from the underfill. it's quite the shitshow in hindsight
I let my brother use one of my Trinity black glossy slims back In 2011 as I had the MW3 slim at the time and the console received an E82 error but prior to that it started to have graphical artifact issues on screen. Then shortly after E82 the console just booted straight to a red dot without any error code. Luckily at that time GameStop warranty allowed me to swap for a Corona matte slim but was super shocked to even see the error on a slim. I had a feeling it was the exact same issue as E74.
Thanx for the technical info regarding E82. I always replace the cgpu when i have this error. U talked about 0013 error about thermal overload. I have one in hands and was wondering what is the issue.. so it is also cgpu related? It boots for milli second them goes to RROD 0013

wish I knew more about soldering and motherboards. What exactly is everything you're using in this video? I'm not sure what the golden substance is after you initially heat up the spot under the component. I also don't know that gel like substance you put on at the end. And was the Q tip just Isopropanol? I've got a friend who would really like to keep his Xbox, and I'd like to try to fix it for him.
Beware that these types of rework requires lots of training and experience. I would suggest starting small. The golden substance I don't understand what you mean. The gel is fresh flux. IPA on the Q-Tip to clean the surface.

Hi Josh, what is the way to rebuild the NAND image? I've got a Xenon that brings up E71 (1013) No sign of it being tampered with such as JTAG. Xebuild?
you need to glitch it and get the key. then rebuild the image in the donor nand option in j-runner with extras. if that does not work, replace the nand.
I just found your channel and subscribed. Xell freezes after about 5-10 seconds, I have Not got to see the keys yet. I’m using the Pico Flasher on a trinity board. What do you think causes this? If I flashed the original nand back onto it and remove the wires I can play on the Xbox all day long. Thank You Brother
@@Josh.Davidson It still happens but I guess it's within industry average of single digit percent per year. I'm starting to suspect the reason they designed the slim edram die a little bit lower than the CGPU is to prevent stress on the interposer, but results in trickier IHS thermal contact.
@@ScaredPilot Right, I have noticed the edram is not quite as tall by a tiny amount. But the edram is the same 65nm one from the Kronos1 phat GPU, so perhaps it was just a coincidence.
So, I cannot do this myself, as I don't have the tools or skills, and I sent my 360 S in for repair many years ago, and it came back as "unrepairable". How would I go about getting this fixed? Mine is a Halo Reach edition that is sentimental to me and has different sounds for power and eject. Is there a way I could buy a donor console and just swap out some of the components? Thanks!
Stop stop!!!! If you have a 0 fuse CPU, just launch freeboot directly with DEVGL. IT IS A CRIME TO SECURE A 0 FUSE CPU BY WRITING A RETAIL FUSESET!!!! Please do not EVER do that! Just use DEVGL!
I don't get the code every time I start the console. If I haven't ran it in awhile and turn it on with the TV off, it gives me the code and red light. If I turn the TV on before turning the console on it'll work. If I haven't used it in awhile and do my second method, I only get the code sometimes.
Hi mate, ive just come across E82 in a trinity RGH 3.0 - it boots Xell fine, but freeboot is E82, is it still the same XCGPU issue as described in the video?

If you watch the video I explain exactly that... it's caused by a failure on the GPU substrate or a bad die itself. Sometimes things fail. There is no plague like official cause like the older RROD issues.
