This video has saved me from mortification at having to give a new mother a baby blanket with a wider bottom than top. I started with an H hook and made a whole panel of 30 rows with 6 colors; then, without noticing, I picked up a G hook and crocheted 2 more full panels. It made a huge difference. I agonized for 2 days about what to do. Then I checked on RU-vid for a fix. I found this wonderful video! Thank you so much!!!!

WOW - a random entry of "frogging in reverse" with not a hope in h**l of getting results but here we are! You've just saved my life or at least my sanity. My project was also a sweater but it started at the bottom edge of the back, worked to the shoulder area, split and worked down the fronts - ending at the bottom front edges. Needless to say, it is the starting edge at the bottom of the back where I need to remove about 10 rows. Wish me luck

This tutorial is great! I’ve only been crocheting a few months and was working on a blanket that ended up shorter than where I started. I used your tutorial to go back and cut off the beginning 20 rows and it worked perfectly! Thank you so much! I will say I was very nervous making the cut lol

I just tried doing this without knowing that it was ok to do it (I'm new to crochet). I'm glad to see there is an established method. I was thinking about using my sewing machine to secure the stitches
@irmar
@irmar 11 месяцев назад
I usually do the securing with a yarn needle first, which enters much more easily and quickly. After the cutting is done, I can comfortably use my usual hook to do the slip stitches, and not a smaller one, otherwise the new first row will be shorter and crunch (just as it sometimes happens with your first row when you do your beginning chains too tightly). Or if you want to use a smaller size crochet, at least you should be careful of working veeery loosely. This technique can also be used for repairing torn pieces or pieces which have come apart.

Kate you absolutely taught and gave me a tool that's a game changer. I made a receiving baby blanket for my new grand daughter. I started crocheting the first 3 inches using a granite aka moss stitch with not enough tension. The result was a very wavy and loose bottom. I have been working on a jumper for weeks. It’s a free pattern called The home girl sweater. I’m working on an X-Large this jumper is very over sized.” Funny thing is large is the same nearly, same count as XL Much to large. Luckily it works up and down not left to right. I have already altered the neck line because the v neck dipped to low. Now the shoulder is enormous, so without removing everything and staring over I can now adjust the shoulders.! I wish i knew how to put up a photo. I will say that being brand new to crochet and being an odd combination of scardey-cat and fearless, and because i had the space to try it first lower than my final intention and in a contrasting color twice so i could really learn all that this technique had for me -- as also not being one to follow directions well, im sure i will need it again! It is a lot of wrestling and a big mess, but both times it worked! Thank you SOOO much for this!!! Tomorrow I'll do it for real in a closer color. It will be tucked inside of the seam of the pillow, so i have some leeway. Awesome trick to know!!!💜💜💜

Thank you for your teaching! I'm a newbie to crocheting; learning from all the wonderful videos on RU-vid; I had been working on the basic double crochet stich and was thinking to make a small lap blanket the first 1-2' of the square was going ok for me :} then I didn't realize that I was going into a round from the square I had just made...pretty funny...anyway I must of lost focus on the edges to continue to make them square...the large funny shaped blanket will not sit flat; so finding your video a God send!! I will try this on what I have there is about 4' that I need to remove from the original 2' square that I started with :{ any other suggesting you have for me as undertake this task ... would be greatly appreciated; have a blessed day.

This is a game changer. I’m also making a cardigan (which I’m testing for a designer) and after I completed the pieces she discovered a change needed to be made to the top rows. Great technique, but once you finish the slip stitches to secure you may not have to use a scissors. You can locate your tail that you will sew in then simply unravel the stitches of your 2 rows. Since you are working from the top you can just pull them out and salvage all of the yarn so you are not wasting all of those bits.

This is much like the knitting process of "steeking." Funny enough, you use crochet to "steek" in knitting, but it's tremendously difficult to find instructions on how to steek crochet (because "crochet" is in the search term for steeking knitting, and knitting has about 5x the number of information crochet does due to its longer history). I Loathe that flipping slip knot on the foundation row and was searching for a way to blast that guy out of my projects. Think I found it! :) There is another method where you use a needle and length of yarn to hold the stitches, then you can slip stitch, sc, dc, whatever it is you need to do, on that length of yarn. I think I'm going to use one or the other method on every project possible from now on so I don't have to look at / deal with that slip knot nub that sticks out and is Never as tight as the rest of my stitches. Oddly, my foundation chain often ends up Floppier than the rest of my project, rather than tighter. I've been known to undo the slip knot and retie it, but firming up the entire foundation is enticing, even if it is a lot of work. I mean, why take all this time to make a beautiful creation only to have that One part exist as a blight? 😆 Guess I'll be making some more dishcloths to practice . . .. Anyone need any dishcloths? 🤦‍♀

Hi Kate, I've just watched your video. I want to shorten a piece with a "double crochet." I have a practice piece also however I can see the same two loops on each stitch like yours. As I think yours is in treble. I'm a beginner crocheter. Made too skinny at beginning and want to cut the work. So can you tell me where the stitches are for the double crochet please. Thanks
@Katieree
@Katieree 3 года назад
Hi Carol! This technique will work exactly the same for the single crochet (double crochet in UK terms)😊 The most important thing is to make sure you’re securing the bottom of your stitches. I do recommend doing a practice piece before cutting your work. Goodluck! ❤️

Hi! I'm thinking of using this technique to fix the middle of a scarf that I messed up my pattern on, rather than fixing a foundation chain. Do you think I could use this technique to separate out where I messed up, go in and correct, make that new chain, and reattach the other part of the project with something simple like a slip stitch? No idea if that makes sense.
@Katieree
@Katieree 3 года назад
Hi Kathryn! I’ve never tried reattaching a section after removing it but it’s worth a shot! I would recommend doing it on a practice swatch first just to see if it can actually work before trying it on your scarf. Goodluck! 💕

What would you do if you have worked in the round with a ribbed cuff? I crocheted a cuff and joined it with slip stitches, then crocheted around , but I didn’t realise I added some stitches and it gradually got bigger. Then later on I fixed it but now for the second sleeve I have to get that amount of stitches and increase but it’s just not adding up. I want to fix the bottom of the previous sleeve but not sure how.

Hi, similar to my question, I have a ribbed cuff (fphdc bphdc) worked in the round, it's just too long... I wondered if this would work ?

Do you have suggestions for cutting off length where it is single crochet, not double crochet. I can't figure out where to put the yarn to protect the rows above where I need to cut.

Hey Darlene! The technique will work exactly the same for the single crochet. You will go in through the bottom of the stitches to secure them 🙂

Hi, thank you for this video! Very informative! I have a really large Chevron blanket that I've been working on for months, and just noticed that I have a different shade of white in the beginning. Can you do this with the Chevron stitch? I wasn't sure what to do when you get to the skip 2 stitches part in the pattern. Thank you!

Hi Kate ur tutorial is great for saving time . I crocheted a dress which isn’t finished yet ,I jus have to crochet the layers in,I’ve got the top part and the netting done .I had a pink colour round the neck line of it and decided I didn’t want that colour anymore so without thinking I jus took it out . And only wen I took it out I realised that I had jus removed my foundation chain . So now I’ve got all these loops and don’t know how to add the new colour in. I really don’t want to frog the whole dress as it has taken near 2 full days to get this far . Could you be able to tell me how to add the new colour yarn in through all the loops plz. I’m not great with understanding written patterns , if u have a tutorial that would be great ! Thanks in advance

Hi Lorraine! This exact method should work for you. The only difference is you have already removed the extra rows before securing your stitches. I recommend going in with a strand of yarn and a yarn needle and threading yarn through the loose stitches to secure them. You should then be able to go in with your crochet hook and pick up each stitch with a slip stitch (just like in this video). Once you have slip stitched in every stitch you can then remove the strand of yarn and continue crocheting as normal (going into the slip stitches). I hope this helps! 💛

Hi dear, I would like to ask if the remaining part that was cut off can still be reused?

Of course! Just unravel the yarn and ball it up for your next project 😊

Would you be able to add onto it after this?
@Katieree
@Katieree 3 года назад
Yes! You would just need to attach your yarn in the corner and crochet along the edge as normal 🙂

heyyy so i was curious if i could do this vertically and perpendicular to the foundation? i’m making a hat and realized i was making it way too big 😭🙌
@Katieree

I’ve never tried but I am leaning towards no, since you will be cutting the yarn in different places leaving multiple loose ends. Maybe give it a go on a swatch before trying on your actual project 💛
