If step one is the application for the license, how do we know what the business location information will be when we haven’t set up the location yet?

Hi Lsx, Thanks for watching! You'll need an original certificate of insurance for step 4. The certificate needs to include the policy number and the number of limits or single limits. Please ensure the insurance company writes your insurance policy on an Acord Form. What type of office is required for Georgia? Does it need to be zoned commercial? And do they require things like a bathroom? Thank you.

According to the Georgia Secretary of State Professional Licensing Boards Division, one must have an established place of business, to include a sales room or sales office in a building or an open lot of a retail used motor vehicle dealership or at which a permanent business of bartering, trading, offering, displaying, selling, or buying is carried on or at a place of business at which the books, records and files necessary to conduct such business are kept. I'm not sure if a bathroom on site is required. I recommend contracting the board at 478-207-2440. They will be able to answer all your licencing questions and may have a suggestion of what would be the cheapest option to sell a few cars monthly. Thanks for your great questions!

There are no square foot requirements for Auto Dealer/Broker offices in the State of Georgia. Bathrooms are not one of the requirements listed in the rules. You must have a Desk - Landline Phone in the business name - NO INTERNET PHONES ALLOWED - A locking file cabinet and Internet. You cannot used the internet that may be available in the building. You MUST have you own internet in your company name.

What if my plan at the moment is not really to have a dealer. I just want to have access to the auctions. therefore I don’t have a place of business. I’m looking to buy personal cars. Maybe after two or three buys I would be open to the idea of running a dealer. Just wondering if there is some type of license for that. Thank you.

Great question! I can understand not wanting to pay for a space you don't plan on using immediately. The Georgia Motor Vehicle Division may be able to provide you with an alternative option to be able to attend auctions. The best number to reach them at is 478-207-2440. There is no license that will allow you to sell cars without a physical commercial office in the State of Georgia. Many people that get into the business rent a very small inexpensive office to allow them to get their license and start buying and selling cars. Then some choose to open a actual car lot with room to display the cars out front. Although, most of the licensed Dealers in the State of Georgia do not have a lot. They operate from a small office and buy and sell from their without an actual display lot. Cory J. There are no required spaces currently in the laws at this time. Most auto broker offices do not include spaces, however, it is important to ensure that the office location you choose does zone properly for an auto broker office. Most brokers find off site parking-their home leaving the dealer tags on the vehicles they currently have in stock or renting a space or two at a storage facility somewhere. Many people getting into this business do not contact the city/county that they would like to start their business in to ensure that the zoning supports used auto dealers and rent an office that does not meet the qualifications of the state. An inspector will be coming to inspect your office and a planning and zoning form signed and notarized by the city/county you are renting from must be sent in as part of your dealer application package prior to you getting your license.
