Need a title for your car because the original was lost or the seller didn't have one? Your vehicle might be eligible for a California Bonded Title. Here is what you need to do to register your car.

Step 1: You will first need to contact your local DMV. This is an important step because only the CA DMV can tell you if your vehicle is eligible for a bonded title.
Step 2: When you have received approval from the DMV, you can move forward with filling out the required paperwork to get your title.

(Must be filled out by an authorized DMV employee or law enforcement officer)
Statement of Facts Form: www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/uploads...
You'll need to explain how, when and from whom you got the vehicle. The state wants to know what efforts you made to get the original title and what roadblocks you hit during the process.
Step 3: Also, include the value of your vehicle on your Statement of Facts Form. Determine the value of your vehicle using the Kelly Blue Book or NADA Guides.

If you are having difficulties determining the value of your vehicle, please reach out to your local DMV for assistance.
Step 4: Get a California Certificate of Lost Title Surety Bond.
Contact your insurance company for assistance with getting a Certificate of Lost Title Bond.

Step 5: Submit all of your completed paperwork and Certificate of Title Bond to the DMV. You'll receive your title with a bonded branding after the DMV approves your submitted documents.

I purchased the remains (frame and part of the motor) of a small 1974 motorcycle at a swap meet in Nevada about 15 years ago. It was a straight cash deal, no paperwork or bill of sale. I have no way of contacting the seller. I recently finished rebuilding the bike to running condition. Can I get a bonded title?

Hello want to see if you could help me I bought a 1967 Cadillac Deville from some guy in Las Vegas Nevada he only give me a bill of sale from Nevada now I’m having trouble trying to register it in California I keep asking for the pink slip but they keep saying they don’t have it and giving me the runaround

I have an old car 1976 model. Will I have to have the car smog checked or can I get a Title only(not interested in Registration yet cause the car is non operational)?

Does this also work on a dirt bike? And what if you run a vin and it’s says it’s stolen?

This process should work for a dirt bike. We recommend you verify with your local DMV to determine if your vehicle is eligible. Your local DMV should be able to provide information on what happens if the VIN lookup shows the vehicle has been reported as stolen. Good luck with getting your title.

I’m trying to junk my car but there is a lien on it from finance company who’ve gone out of business. I did what DMV told me, sent certified letter to finance company and it was returned. I took previous DMV paperwork and the letter back to DMV. Then they tell me that I need to get a “bond” for the car. I bought a bond online and took everything back to DMV. I was told it would take a couple of months for final paperwork. A little over 2 months later and DMV mailed my paperwork back to me. I don’t know what they want. I also must pay ANOTHER fee. What am I missing? The car is a 1998, has been vandalized, isn’t running and in horrible condition.

Hi Ms. Elle Inn, If your mom previously registered the vehicle into her name, she should be able to get a duplicate original title from the DMV. Getting a bonded title is only necessary if she doesn't have another way of getting her title. However, if the state is requiring unpaid registration fees to be paid, getting a bonded title most likely wouldn't result in avoiding these fees. The state issues the title with a bonded branding and will probably attempt to collect these fees before issuing the title. We recommend contacting your local DMV to determine the best option to be able to donate the car to charity with minimal fees. Good luck!

I recently bought a vehicle from out of state, previous owner gave me a title that was signed and notarized under her name but it wasnt the current title I tried getting in touch with her but no luck. The title is restored salvage so I called my MVD and filled the paperwork for the bonded title, now im waiting on a response from the mvd to see if I get approved is there anything I should expect

Great question! There are a number of reasons the state may determine a vehicle is not eligible for a bonded title. The most common reason a vehicle is not eligible for a bonded title is due to it having an active lien. You'll need to wait to find out if your vehicle is eligible before purchasing the required surety bond. As for getting the title with the bonded branding, the time it takes is dependent on the DMV. Hey my friend I bought a car in California the guy game a California title but when I went to register in my name dmv say is registered in Arizona they advised me to call Arizona dmv so I called them and they didn’t give much info they say is registered over there and it’s confidential, so it’s been 2 months of stress 2 days ago California dmv finally they sent to Sacramento the tile and a police report I did to see if was something wrong but not stolen and I called Arizona dmv. And the lady told me about bond title. So I went yesterday again to ca Dmv, to investigation and I receive the envelope but basically they did nothing really bad service so I told them i want to do that they didn’t wanna help me and I explain them what Arizona dmv told me and finally yesterday I was reading about bond title I don’t much about it but I called my friend he runs a business with farmers he helped me today and finally I purchased a bond he mailed it to me, I print it again I went to dmv, rude lady didn’t wanna help one Latina cool lady help me she said she would help me and then they contacted the manager, and I after lunch Eliza Latina woman I told her they haven’t help me yet and after 2 hours they told me to pay fees and registration, they rude lady still told me the bond I took was a copy they need the original, they gave a driving permit for a month tomorrow I will call the bond company to mail me the same bond but what headache I made the mistake I got this car I paid lots of money and the fucker who sold me the car block my number but now I have insurance and a mont permit but when I receive the bond by mail I’ll have to go to DMV again they say will extend the permit for 3 months plus investigation, wish me good luck
