Happy to hear you read my comment about my painted oak grain cabinets and to hear your feedback. I agree if I was in the business (was once) I wouldn't hand paint them. You have to put out factory finish because that's what the customers expect. I don't have to guess what my expectations are for my own kitchen. (Also am sooo much better at brush painting than the average Joe.) Thanks for this video. Very informative.
Thanks for answering all the questions, I used a compressor paint gun a few months ago and changing the settings on the spray and testing it out on the sample board like you did was tricky. Maybe a tips video on how to dial in the spray settings? What to look for with splatter etc.
If you like lacquer try using a lacquer sanding sealer primer sometime, stuff is awesome. Not necessary, but priming your door panels and rail/stile edges before assembly is nice. It reduces the amount of inside corner sanding you need to do.
Great video and beautiful work handyman! I've been using ppg breakthrough paint for cabinets. Water based, dries as fast as lacquer, and is extremely durable. Rated for foot traffic. I spray it with the graco tc pro cordless and finish is flawless
Awsome job i was reminded watching your video that when i was in paint and body school i painted the President of my school front porch swing tje same way and man it was awsome.
Looks good. After the live stream late night and alcohol, I'm glad to see they turned out great. lol. Keep up the good work and thank you for the video.
Damn those look great. I could have used your help when I painted my maple cabinets last year. Everything that could go wrong did...several times. I finally called several painter to give me a bid to paint the cabinets. One guy that supposedly specializes in painting cabinets wouldn’t do it even after I basically offered him a blank check. That’s how desperate I was. No takers so I did it myself.
I thought those looked like sterile gloves in a close up, then saw the package in the background....very nice sir, it says a lot about the attention to detail and ultimate craftsmanship. 🤣 Or maybe you’re like me and bring home expired gloves to use around the house.
Yeah I must admit I was pointing at Strainer saying you missed a step... Lol, anyways Cabinets came out Awesome. Can't wait to see them built and installed.
After you mentioned tinted lacquer in your previous video, I went with that for refinishing my cabinets. Worked awesomely. I wish I had the space you have though. I used a Wagner collapsible spray booth. Thanks for your videos! Even as someone who has done renovation work (part time) for over 10 years, it's nice to still learn things.
Great video, thanks. FWTW, I did brush paint oak cabinets in a house I sold and I didn't hear any negative comments back from agents. I did like the look of the grain coming through. To me a lacquer finish is professional, but so common as to look cheap. I think which to use depends on the overall design. Old farmhouse look is a hot design in my area and uncommon because it costs a bit more because of higher labor. In a more modern design lacquer would be better. Just my 2 cents. For sure I think lacquer is a more durable finish but I don't find home buyers to be very practicable and instead want a show house.
I made bedroom furniture for my daughter and sprayed it with a Titan Airless sprayer, using a latex paint from Benjamin Moore that was designed for furniture. It required a full 16 hours before re-coat. Did 3 coats, first sanding at 220, second at 320. (One portion got 4 because I did a bad job there). The result was as smooth as glass and looked like it was lacquer. Previously, I did some kitchen cabinets with regular trim-paint on oak and it was nowhere near as good as yours. Home owner was trying to save some money.
Ive seen in a couple refinish videos guys use the hooks on the tops of the cabinets. You also used them for the doors too. What do you do when you are done to repair those holes left by the hooks?
Hi, great video. For the front cabinet doors do you spray 3 times?. Also, for oak cabinets do you think 2 coats of wood filler or aqua coat is sufficient or would you recommend 3?
Build subsequent coats, lather it on. Then sand flat with 320 until no shiny spots appear. Apply final coat(s). It’ll have depth and have that hard candy look and feel.
I understand your video is on professional painting . But It really depends on what look you are going for. I work in a custom Cabinet Shop. And we have people who want painted oak cabinets (brand new). Then they rub a darker glaze in them. It makes a unique look when you can see the grain. Also some people like it for the rustic or old redone look. That's one thing I love about Construction And Cabinet building. It really comes down to what you yourself want. There are so many different ways to do things.
There is something about kitchen cabinets that needs to be done professionally ))) you can’t do them cheap that is for sure. In most cases, Kitchen is what sells a house. Love your work!
We was told that our large kitchen was going to cost over $10,000 to replace the old cupboards. Did them through fastcabinetdoors.com and they have the best quality I have seen anywhere. No particle board, hinges and slides for under $3000. So pleased and your so right the kitchen is what sells the house.
Vintage Gopherwood, disagree it’s like anything, if you do your research, prepare everything & follow instructions, do a couple of test runs on a old kitchen cabinet door that either neighbour has thrown out for rubbish pick up, I was quoted from $22k to $35k new kitchen by trade professionals, so all I did cause I kept all appliances & water/power same, $1200 to paint/ including new splash back replaced old tiles, handles etc, I had a stone mason to come in and change the bench top to granite, about $1600 installed, looks great for $2800 only, I have friends who have payed $26k & have had issues with the Tradies even going to consumers affairs as work not to standards, at least you know you have put the time & effort in your own work, also when people come over I tell them it cost $17k as i already had new appliances, they believe me until I explained I did it.
Kitchens sell a house to a point. At certain price points people just replace everything so it’s really the kitchen size rather than the actual stuff in it.
I made my built in around my fire place and I sand and will paint once my gun comes in. I’m using Semi gloss and I’m nervous about it but hopefully it works fine. It’s a high traffic area and kids touch often so we shall see. I’m taping off everything this weekend
Devilbiss sprayers like the Flg4 and 3 seam to have such a soft spray that the finish puts it self on. Good choice and cost effective! Another good one that I have come across that has an awesome finish is the Impact series from Iwata. Both are awesome and the guy on a budget can afford!
Do you use lacquer on all your paint grade projects? Do you never use enamel? I’m really intrigued by this idea. Everyone I know uses latex or enamel for cabinets and lacquer only as a clear top coat over stain. Appreciate the videos and would love to hear your response. Thanks!
They look beautiful ~ very very nice! :) Trendy colors come & go but white kitchens never go out of style. For long, anyway. They've been around since the early 1900's. White kitchens are pretty, cheerful, bright & clean looking work spaces. Eventually everybody returns to white.
Bought a house with painted cabinets. Looks like they did a decent job, but as you point out, you can see the wood grain. I want to use this method to paint them to match a hutch we have (kind of a cream color). The cabinets were painted with a waterborne alkyd paint. Can I spray a lacquer tinted to a cream color over the alkyd paint? What tips do you have for prepping these for doing it this way?
what size fan do you get with that gun at max setting? I use Lenmar all the time but prefer the ultra unilaq as it doesnt yellow like the nitro laq. Im looking for a good gun and and like a big fan. Guess I got used to it from my older car painting days using a binks model 7 that thing was amazing.
cool video. i think that people are currently more okay with the oak grain showing because thin wood finishes seem to be popular right now-stains, milk paints, etc.
I understand why you used swivel hangers. Yes, they do have to be controlled when spraying but once you need to spray the side, you can without needing to reposition yourself. How many times did I go around to the other side and accidentally touch the project with my sleeve or sprayer hose. ALSO.. this stuff dries so fast you have to keep spraying to retain that "wet edge". Your awesome dude!
I believe that spray gun comes with a few tips, I'm assuming you went with 1.8mm. Would you thin latex pant with Floetrol? I'm pretty much ready to tackle my kitchen cabinets, just need to clear up those 2 concerns
I paint a lot of cabinets myself. Love your technique. One thing might save you some time is rigging your hangers with 2 hooks so they don't spin so much.
Interesting, I think you'd get better results by having the doors flat when you spray them. You'd never be concerned with runs...Place the doors flat on two 1/2 inch by 3/4" strips of wood. Also, with "your" method change the nozzle position so you can spray the door vertically first and then change it quickly back to spray horizontally. You always have to spay the doors in both directions to eliminate the look of lines...I have no idea how I found your channel, but I used to paint cabinet doors professionally in a real cabinet shop. It looks like you got good results. Man...that's a small space to be painting in. Good job.
If the trim in the kitchen is painted white, does the white of this lacquer just match well enough? Or do you do all the trim in lacquer as well? Thanks for the video
Would your airless sprayer be enough for painting cabinets? If not, is a pancake compressor enough for getting them done? Wondering about the tool ($$) investment needed.
Honestly I couldn't find a video like this 5 years ago another solid video. I noticed you didn't strain it to but good thing it was first coat maybe that's why you had that issue with your spray pattern 3 or 4 doors in
OK, you sold me on this product, but I am trying to fill the grain on the bases (new doors and drawer fronts). Anyone know if you can use Aqua Coat under the precat or recommend a good grain filler that will not have any negative interactions with solvent based lacquer?
MAB used to make a paint called agricultural white, it had a finish like a fingernail paint and lasted for years, I painted a handrail and railing with this paint and you would've thought that the entire handrail was dipped in a paint can, with a beautiful glasslike finish, by the way without all of that prep work.
I would have suggested using a primer. Also for that to be a hlvp there is a lot of over spray. If any one is interested in getting the. Same finish without out the high. Vocs. I would suggest using Breakthrough from PPG. The lacquer is very bad f or your heart and also very flammable. There was a case in Dallas where a paint company wen in to paint cabinets and ended up catching a.housr on fire. Even your venting has to be right or that as well can start a fire .
Doors look good, how do they feel on both sides running a flat hand over them? Dry spray is a bitch when lacquer retarder isn't used. May slightly slow down dry time, but helps eliminate over spray sediment, especially when using a lacquer thinner that is only good for cleaning your equipment when using Lenmar products.
It’s been a while ago, I recall a video you did on keeping track of jobs and payments. Can you please tell me the name of the app you use? Sorry, I can’t locate the video. My bad
Great job and brilliant result. I have three questions: what kind of wood did you use to make the frames, what is the input pressure on the manometer of the spray gun, what diameter does the nozzle of the spray gun have? Thank you.
The tank pressure was at 60 the gun was at 25. Here is a video on how I made the cabinets ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cu-Q1HAgDFE.html I can't remember what tip size I have.
Once again, THANK YOU!!! Been watching your video for a LONG time and YOU have helped me quite a bit. I have a question, your door styles appear to be a Shaker style, which is what I will be doing but, my question is this, for your center panel, where do you buy the wood or materail that you are using for your center panel and is there a specific name for it? THANK YOU.!
I experimented with precat on furniture and was told NOT to spray inside unless I wanted to blow the house to high heaven. Even with proper venting. Outside spraying managed to piss off a couple neighbours. Is that a water based lacquer?
This is a great product. I’m using it for all my trim, baseboards, and window casing. The issue I’m trying to solve is when painting a large area (such as the casing on my 6’ tall windows), the overspray sticks to the areas I already painted that started to cure. As you know it only takes seconds for it to go from liquid to starting to tack up. When the overspray hits these areas this creates a very rough surface and looks terrible. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks
Aren't lacquer fumes highly flammable? On the DSW channel I think he was telling people about an accidental explosion a contactor had painting lacquer.
