Skating rails can be extremely frightening to beginners. I know it was for me. Here are tips I picked up, from many talented skaters, and a method to help you improve at/learn to skate rails. It may be scary at first. But, if you follow this routine, you'll be confident enough to skate flatbars and handrails.
Let me know which tricks you’d like to learn in the comments. Thanks for watching.

"Dont conflate smt you love with it being different than everything else" now thats a very wise comment in my opinion. Sounds like a very good father to son advice or something. Much respect to Norman. Greetings from Austria (Europe).

Thank you! Greetings from Los Angeles. I had to learn this lesson myself. As a young person, I also assigned disproportionate value to things I was interested in, relative to the interests of others. But, you live and you learn, hopefully 👊🏾

I feel like i did the exact same thing when i was younger, now i am 32 and a skater but also a father and thats one reason why i try to reflect more bout things i did or thought in the past. Now when i heared what you said i thougt why didnt i say that bevore cause its exactly how it is. I guess its hard to verbalize things like that. So glade that you answered. Love your videos and tipps, im skating every day at my local curb/ Plaza (lendplatz , Graz, Austria)and the flipping out thing took my a while but your Videos helped me a lot. ❤

I'm 38 years old and skated from 12 to 24 then quit, I just started back in January and there wasn't this type of info back then. I'm progressing at my current age now, and I never quit working out so I have the strength and stamina to keep it up. People think I'm only 24-26 when they meet me haha. 😊

You’re in a great spot. I’m only a year older. So, I remember the void of used info, back when we started. But, since you’re healthy and fit, you can take advantage! Happy shredding 👊🏾

Bro.. your shoulders video fixed my back 180s on my session today! I was doing a flatground session like you talked about and worked on back 180, kickflip, heelflip, and tre.

Dude this came in an amazing timing for me, i’ve been skating for 12 years but never got a flat bar to pratice, only a pump to square rail on my local park so i freak out skating flatbar, just built one at the local and im getting fked up by every grind lmao, going to try these tips to see if i unlock my fifties and feebles lol

Great advice! 🙌 The universal truth for me on rails and holding tricks is that having my weight in the scariest spot is typically the correct technique. I remember when I was first learning to hold 50-50s on round rails, and I wanted to lean forward where it feels safe to jump off to the other side. But that makes it impossible to actually do the trick, and confidently placing my weight centered over the top of the rail and a bit in the "back seat" was always the key, even if it initially felt like certain death. 😆 Now I'm very aware of where my head is placed in relation to the rail (or whatever obstacle)

That’s why I didn’t like skating when I was little and got sponsored for redline bmx instead. It wasn’t till metrogrammed ig shhhh where I saw the art and style and actually wanted to start learning after u could slow it down on ur phone
@NormanWoods

I wish I had the ability to slow things down, when I was younger. BMX is gnarly though. Whole other set of risks. If you can get past those, anything is possible.

Funny you mentioned this, I’m learning to grind in transition, and some slappy’s! Congrats on the new video stuff!Thanks Norman🙏🏻💯🤙🏼😎
@NormanWoods
@NormanWoods 2 месяца назад
Man! Those sucked for me. Transition was nowhere near, when I started skating. So I was already pretty far along, when I learned. Even grinding the smallest mini was a challenge. Two tips, from Max Barrera, that helped me were: 1) get on top 2) stay still once you’re up there.

I'm an older guy who started skating late, and I have to say watching a lot of your videos has definitely helped with my progress. I'm still struggling with boardslides on a rail at the moment and I know when I improve a bit more I'm going to attempt more grinds. I'm definitely going to come back to this video when the time comes.
@NormanWoods
@NormanWoods 2 месяца назад
Take your time. But, you can apply this concept to boardslides as well. Just learning to balance on them, and then jumping off will be great for your progress.
