I watched the first 20 seconds and then went ahead and downloaded and installed it thinking "meh, I got this." after 30 minutes of head scratching I came back to the video, watched another 5 minutes, then said again "meh, I got this.", another 30 minutes of head scratching, came back to watch the rest of the video, this time sticking it out with several moments of "oh.. I too am transitioning from mouse to the T-flight HOTAS X I purchased in 2009! Still working perfectly. I just started playing Elite Dangerous last week, I think I played the original from 1990 until about 1995. I wasn't very good with the mouse playing ED, so tried the HOTAS out, but was frustrated with the accuracy. Now I have the best of both worlds. Thanks so much for this, you made it all perfectly clear, now I understand a very important aspect of gaming with a joystick and have the tools to implement that knowledge! Followed along on the second viewing and BOOM I'm on my way! Just the fine tuning to taste. Maybe now I can become 'dangerous.'
***** Great to hear Frank - sadly the VJoy driver program is what causes the audio issues you can hear in this video so I'm not able to use it myself - however I still use the HOTAS while out exploring and for other times when accuracy isn't so critical.
AdoredTV Just an update, I'm 57% of dangerous now, love my fine tuned stick! Took maybe two months to get the exact curves I needed, well worth the experimentation.

Thank you so much for sharing this. In addition to fixing the sensitivity of my T-Flight HOTAS X in Elite: Dangerous, I've set up 3 separate profiles for normal flying, supercruise, and landing. In combination with autohotkey, I've managed to set up my stick to automatically change profiles when I deploy/retract my landing gear and enter/exit supercruise. My throttle curves have allowed me to use full-range instead of forward-only and still maintain a high degree of control. Normal flight and supercruise have both been adjusted so that the throttle stays in the blue for most of its physical range, and the landing profile caps forward thrust at 50% with a nice gentle curve. The only real problem I've run into so far is that due to the way autohotkey works, my profile will change if I try to engage my FSD but fail for whatever reason (Mass lock, deployed hardpoints, etc...). Right now my workaround is a dedicated button to cycle through my profiles to choose the correct one if things go wonky, but I'm still trying to figure out a more elegant solution.

It definitely wasn't quick, I can tell you that, lol. I've spent the better part of a couple of days trying to configure this stick to my liking. Believe it or not, there isn't a single control in the game that isn't bound to my T-Flight, and I even managed to arrange them in a manner that makes them pretty easy to remember. It's a good thing too since once you have a 3-4 button combination mapped you can't see past the second button... As for VoiceAttack, I actually forgot that it existed. I remember using a program someone scratch built for X3 back in the day that did the same thing, and it was a blast to use. I'm definitely going to be taking a look, so thanks for the recommendation.
+DreadPirateLynx Yep check it out - it's amazing for the really obscure stuff that you'll normally forget on the stick. I have a video on it somewhere. ;)
AdoredTV Downloaded the trial for VoiceAttack and got hooked as soon as I got my first command working. I've decided to forego autohotkey for curve profile switching and will be using VoiceAttack instead. They won't be automatic anymore, but now that I don't have to worry about pressing keys to do it, it's good enough for me. "Ahead, Three-Quarters Impulse" is a use I'll be getting a lot of enjoyment out of. Now to start creating commands to manage my ship systems... Why did you do this to me? I finally thought I was ready to actually play the game, and now I'll be spending the next day or so filling out my command list. :p
+DreadPirateLynx Haha! I know you can end up playing around with VoiceAttack forever lol. I even set up a profile for Mass Effect and started controlling my squad with voice commands.
Thanks for posting this. I just picked up a hotas 4 and it's been a PITA to do fine maneuvers at low speeds. This is what I was looking for in the drivers for thrustmaster, that I didn't find. Use to have this stuff in the 90's, don't know why it isn't integrated in the drivers already.
I got my HOTAS X last week and I found it was too sensitive I was looking how to fix it and although this is an old video it works in Windows ten and really helped me improve the sensitivity so thanks for uploading this. If you want to try a game you should download war thunder it's a free WW2 fighter plane game and the joystick makes it even better

great tip, tried it out today, for just a couple of hours or so, and already noticed some significant improovement to the controls of my ship... which sadly run out of fuel, just a few hundrents of thousents of kilometers short of that outpost...but getting in and out of a station, suddently became a lot easier.
I started playing elite dangerous recently, and while I have no problem using my x52 pro with elite dangerous, I think this utility would be perfect for War Thunder. I tried using my joystick for that game just to increase the realism, but I found that it was impossible for me to get as much control as I could with my mouse. I assumed it was because of mouse acceleration, and the fact that if I drag my mouse slowly I can go all the way across my mousepad and only move the cursor 2 or 3 inches on screen, but if I yank the mouse I can go all the way across my screen while moving only 2-3 inches on the mousepad. It could also be the fact that even the fixed weapons in elite dangerous have a few degrees of gimballing built in, but I'm not sure. I'll definitely remember about this if I ever want to play War Thunder again now that they've added all kinds of new things to it.

Hello Buddy i done what you did. then i tried a straight line from one corner to the other and that worked great . give it ago. you have the option to straighten the line. Fly Safe :)
Damn. I wasn't even searching for this (it just came up in my feed), but like literally no more than an hour ago I was playing Elite and was thinking about how aggravating using my Thrustmaster X was because of this issue trying to get fine movements in the early part of using a joystick axis. Just Google reading my mind again. Damn you Google! I both love and fear you. LOL I can't wait to try this.

This looks really good. I am going to be getting a T-Flight Hotas X, and I'll be using this program. I instinctually understand about Newtonian physics and it makes perfect sense to me. Alas, I can't get the fine control I need with a gamepad which is what I'm using now. So until I can shake loose the funds for a t-flight, I'll be using Assist On.
Kelly Rayburn It's still a bit inaccurate even with this I find. Truth is it can only do so much, however the HOTAS X is still really nice to use for immersion.
Just spent 4 hours training to use the joystick. It looks like joystick gives better manoeuvrability and mouse gives better precision. I spent an hour on the 4th training thing against the equal sidewinder, he didnt land a single blow in that whole hour of me trying to shoot the bugger. So yeah it took me an hour to kill him, most of the pain was inflicted in the last 20 minutes so i got much better during the fight lol. I'm definitely going to be needing this, as well as maybe another few more runs with that sidewinder, if i can drop the fight to 20 minutes, then to 10, then 5, then finally to 1 minute like i can with a mouse and keyboard then that would be just great. But dam moving the ship with thruster/joystick is so much more fluid, i just need to master adding yaw into the turns, a horizontal yaw roll is basically what i need to be able to pull off with accuracy since thats the move that lets you keep people in ur sights 90% of the time. It just switches to full mode sensitivity unlike a mouse you cant go slow then fast, its just bam fast, so what ur doing is predicting where he may go and then making very small movements towards it to hit him - making things 100 times harder. So going to try this tommz, i think it will help alot, thank you for posting this : ) (also adoredtv i suggest you try voiceattack, and then go and download a voice pack that makes it seem like ur talking to your computer when u play, so "engage thruster 100%" or "play some music" whereby the voicepack puts on the radio and u can choose what genre and each genre has like 4+ different radio stations. all this while your flying or fighting and whatnot) -> this is the voice pack site www.ripleygalactic.com/ and voiceattack u can just google it.
Don't make a curve! Make it a straight line (going from the bottom up) and just take a little off the top and bottom. Try that and check your accuracy. Dead spot eliminated!
Brother, the only way to get more accurate with a stick is using it for a couple hundred hours. Although tuning helps, but not as much as just using it.
I to bought a T-Flight HOTAS X. I had a bitch of a time trying to set this up, I belive I used Headsofts VJoy. But I allready used something called JoyToKey and I had problem to get it to recognize the virtual driver input. Things i learned: The led button on the center actually switches the output of the axis. I was really annoyed until i figured this out because I thought the JoyToKey program didn't recognize the special axis.(I use mine as two extra buttons for brake and weapon selection via joy-to-key) I play a Battlefield2 mod called Forgotten Hope 2, and battlefield2 dosen't really give you much joystick configuration. So if you installed joystick curves with VJoy driver on older games which depends entirely on directx to automate controller discovery you probably have to remap your buttons. (this took me a while to figure out)
i had to close this program and re-open it to see results, not sure what the hotkey does. not sure how to get this into older games but maybe it's fine. free software,little instructions so were on our own so thanks to vids/forums. i'm on win 8.1 and other people are like "it does'nt seem to do anything" same here until i closed cuves and reopened. a save button would have been nifty. any game that does'nt have realtime axis binding may not work example COMANCHE 4 uses simple radio buttons. hope i can get this working someday in FREESPACE 2 and its mods and if i do it will use that VIRTUAL AXIS TEST LOOP so i'm glad ATV pointed that out. other mysteries are: no target for the short cut-i don't know where this is on my machine and no way to delete profiles that i could find-just rename and default them i guess. my version is 0.0.6.1.5 maybe this is better vers app.box.com/s/c6c3frzsc6x3xttf8w0m
I mapped the axis, but what about the buttons, when I use the virtual joystick in elite, the buttons don't work. I check and all the buttons are still correctly mapped even though I switched to the generic joystick.
Would this help if the yaw reading on my hotas is jumping around on its own sometimes? It will be fine if I twist slightly to the right and let go of the stick. But as soon as I start moving the stick again the yaw reading starts jumping which rolls my ship all by itself...........
so does this program just have to be running for doing the first time binds in ED? then after its saved you do not need to run this every time with the game?
I have the T Flight X, but for me it works only if I select Generic Joystick in Elite Dangerous Presets. If I select the T Flight X preset, like you do in the video, I get the default curves.
Nice vid, it sounds like your audio problems are coming from sampling rate settings while recording. Try lowering the sample rate if you haven't already done so.
Is there a way to flip the virtual test loop to move in the other direction in the background? Star Wars Squadrons needs inputs for both up and down, not just the general axis.
Is this neccessay with the Thrustmaster T Flight Hotas 4 as well? I read that the deadzones were suppose to be better with that version and the fireware could be updated.
I was satisfied with the Hotas 4 responsiveness and precision but tried this tweak anyway (to the letter). It actually made it worse. Especially the x-roll-axis was way off, so I reversed the change.
i use a trustmaster HOTAS x on elite dangerous from almost 6 months. It worked nice but lately it start to creaky awful, in particular when you make slow moves and at max yaw, or roll. I cant use it anymore. the inside plastic mechanism is greased with Vaseline, and you cant replase the Vaseline.
AdoredTV i sent it today in service. after 6 months with Joysticks, i just cant play with m&k. It took me 5 min to land...:( how to relearn play this with m&k?
TypoRo1 Lol, tell me about it. In my latest "let's play" I'm back using the mouse but with Yaw and Roll switched around - Even that was enough to throw me off and my landing in particular. Let me know what the result of the RMA is.
I didn't need to do this for my Logitech Extreme 3d pro. Felt like the logitech was a lot more accurate. Thinking about returning the Hotas X since the stick just feels uneven
I bought a T.Flight Hotas One but the stock settings just don't work for me on Xbox One War Thunder. I also have the Steam version of the game so I will try to get the hotas setup the way I like it there using this program. My question is can it also be used to fine tune on Xbox as well? I am trying to set up curves for a 2 stick setup. I have a Warthog on the right and a 16000 on the left. I can set up the curves and see them testing for Pitch and Roll on my Warthog. When I copy the curve to Yaw and Switch the Source to T.16000M for Yaw, the Tester is not showing any response. I have tried Destination for VJoy #1 and VJoy #2, doesn't work either way. Help! How to set up both joysticks?
OK, I think I figured out this problem. I used "+Add new". I connected it to my T.16000M, set it for Source Axis Roll and Destination Axis Yaw and put it on VJoy #1, and it seems to be working! The third tab that I created with Add new shows as another "Roll" tab after I set it up as described above.

Thanks' great video. Apart from Elite Dangerous, I'm playing Squadrons these day's. In Star Wars Squadrons there is a setting for the joystick Dead Zone and sensitivity. Dead Zone I suppose should be on 0, but what about sensitivity 0 or 100 percent?
and if anyone knows after say restart or next session i open the software and it doesnt save my preset i made, is that fine since its bound in the game or do i have to make a preset every time i play?
This is awesome, thanks, just what I'm looking for :) Do you know if there is a way to invert the curve so it runs faster rather than slower at the start? There is a few degrees of deadzone in the yaw which I'd like to compensate for. The only real thing to watch out for I suppose is not making too much of a dip in the centre as you are widening the dead zone in the middle. This is great when going from centre to left or right (for example) but going from right to left means it doesn't transition smoothly. By the way, one thing I would recommend which I did with mine for Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen, is I opened my throttle up with a screwdriver and took a file to the wee plastic gimbal bit (for want of a better word) that the throttle sits in. Basically there are a couple notches which centre the throttle when it's in the middle which is a pain when going from zero to full or visa versa as you hit that little clunky bit in the middle (as you know, the Hotas X has centre as its resting position). If you just file off the little nodules though (which is super easy to do - if not a little tiring) then grease it up and you have a throttle which smoothly runs all the way from zero to full! :) So much better for space sims!
it is not static. dropouts and click are usually bad audio driver, try not to use nvidia audio, well known for this. if no success then look into audio clicks/pops/dropouts
I wish there was a way to map the virtual joystick buttons from physical joystick buttons. I like the headsoft_vjoy and I have the curves working well and combine my stick, throttle and rudders in one virtual stick. However in older sims like Xwing that only support a single device the buttons will not work.
Can i do the same procedure in arma 3? Because i dont have any axis in the control option..just the related move i want to do Btw: your accent just makes me listening to all your vids without actually watching them
+Memnon2212 Cheers! Not sure about how it works in other games but so long as you can enter an input with the stick it should work with anything I think.
This was a very helpful vid. But honestly I think I will stick to my key and mouse set up. Atleast until I get the consumer version of the oculus rift. spektor25 It's helped but it's still not near the mouse and keyboard level for me. I doubt it ever will be but it's helped for sure. Got so much work to do and I'm having some hardware issues (as you can hear in this video, my mic is going a bit wonky), but hopefully I'll get more vids out soon. Barely got time to play any games right now.
