I've always been a fan of flying around in the Spitfire in MS Flight Simulator - first on the Xbox, then on the PC, but after watching Masters of the Air, I wanted more.
The problem is that the planes in MSFS are incredibly expensive, there aren't that many WW2 War-Birds, and there's no air to air combat, let-alone weapons.
I did some research, and I was very impressed with the look of Il-2 Sturmovik games - and the "Cliffs Of Dover Blitz Edition", with the Tobruk DLC add-on, was the WW2 combat flight sim I settled on.
Unfortunately CLoD really needs a Stick - you can't easilt map a gamepad to the game, so I had to consider buying a HOTAS.
After looking at various options, I was about to pull the trigger on the more expensive Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS, when I thought I'd check Facebook Marketplace, and found a Hotas X (PS3 & PC) locally on offer for £15!
So, of course I snapped up this bargain, and was very pleased that although it was old, it was in as-new condition, and so far all the functions seem to work great. In this video buyers guide, I talk you through my thought-process, and how I feel now about the Hotas X, and how much I'm enjoying using it.

I've been using one of these for over twenty years - I've only had two, and they are both more than ideal for simming, as they are quite versatile and hard-wearing. I use FS9, MSFS, DCS and have used IL2 in the past, it's never let me down at all. Love it.

"...really expensive... 25" Coming from DCS, that's so cheap. 🙂 BTW: I started with this HOTAS, back in 2014, I ejoyed it and it got me into the HOTAS. When I unpacked it in 2022 after years of not using them it was terrible, not sure how good/bad was it new, but few years later the grease was gone, it was rough, etc... so I moved to much better (and more expensive) HOTASes. If you know you REALLY want HOTAS skip Hotas X and go for Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS HOTAS (with TWCS throttle). That's so much better. And if it breaks (it likely will eventually) and you're still in, go for something better. I went for VKB Gladiator Kosmosima stick and later for their STECS throttle and TPR pedals. But that's another story and completely different price bracket (~1000 Euros in total). HOTAS is definitelly a way to go, although I saw even controller guys who would beat me every single time. But that is... also another story.

I have a Logitech 3D Pro Extreme which is excellent and cheap, but I've always wanted a Throttle, this one seems to be the best choice for the money.

I've owned one for a while and used it with MSFS, Arma, and DCS. It might not have a million toggle switches and buttons but it has plenty for the average player and at a pretty reasonable price. Would recommend both T Flight Hotas and more Scalespeeder videos 👍

There's a small plastic screw just below the grip that will lock that turning of the stick if you aren't using it. Feels a bit more solid with it locked.

Let me tell you something! This is a great little stick! Very robust tho these days NEW its a bit pricy! i bought 1 years ago for 45€ I put about 600 hours on it. and it was in perfect condition when i made the mistake of #upgrading! I went to what was considered its bigger better brother the T 16000m hotas! That piece of crap stick lasted about 60 hours before it started to develop issues. Tricker not working properly, clicking would not register or would just register 2 clicks randomly! the twist to rotate (YAW) went to pi$$ soon after and like an idiot i took the thing apart and fixed the issues myself. The t 16000m is well known for being shite in the build quality department and being that its more than twice the price of this little stick it's a bloody rip off. With that said! I then fired that stick in a drawer and bought myself a VKB Sim Stick. To be fair the throttle quadrant of the T16000 works fine so i still use that. But dear got the Stick was awful peice of shite.
